Couldn't praise the staff here highly enough - everyone was extremely helpful, polite and friendly. Even gave us complimentary champagne as it was my birthday. The room was very clean and well furnished with no signs of wear and tear. Valet parking is available at an extra... more

Excellent Hotel
I wasn't expecting much after reading previous reviews, but the hotel was great and it was one of the nicest hotel stays I've had. The room was luxurious, the staff were very helpful. There is great food and drink within walking distance. It was also nice and quiet, great for business folk.
Great location but average service
The hotel is in a great location next door to the new Scottish Parliment building however it is typically British in that it is expensive for what you get. The rooms were nicely decorated although the bathroom needed a good clean (mould growing on gros where we could park the car or how much it would cost. Finally, when it came to settling the bill, they tried to charge us an extra £15 per night but luckily I had a copy of my reservation confirmation with me stating the room prices I had booked.
not so well done the macdonald holyrood hotel
we stayed with the hotel for its christmas package last year and had high hopes of a hassle free christmas with all the food taken care of by the hotel. Things where going well as we arived to a friendly and pleasant reception from the hotel staff. The room was clean and well appointed, but with some oddly located lightswitches and a speacker for the tv in the bathroom which can not be switched off. However, it was the dinning experience at the hotel that was by far and away the most memorable. Throughout the half a dozen or so... more
Very nice hotel
I stayed here with my boyfriend for 3 nights between 01-04 November 2005. It cost us about £20 in a taxi from the airport. I had considered taking the airport bus into the centre and walking but, on reflection, this would have been quite annoying (essentially because the weather wasn't great!). If you're looking for a hotel that's got great facilities then this is your place! However, although it was only a 5 min walk to the Royal Mile and 10 mins to Prince's Street, if you really want to be bang in the centre you might like to... more
Has plenty to offer
I stayed in the hotel in October 2005 while attending a conference at the same hotel. A great location, just up the road from the new parliament, and across the road from Dynamic Earth. Also, its quiet here, and yet you are central to everything. The room was very comfortable, well maintained, with a really comfortable bed. The bathroom was great too, nice size tub, and everything you need. The airconditioning was ok, could have been better. The room had everything you could need, including fridge and complimentary water, and free shoe... more
Good hotel & facilities:worth it (if on a deal)!
We went on a deal mid-week through active hotels, which included a massage in the beauty suite. The leisure facilities, including a gym and pool, were excellent. The hotel rooms were a good size, if uninspired in design, and the bathroom was fine (good water power & temperature etc.), but the best thing about the hotel was the staff, who could not have been more friendly and helpful. The restaurant menu looked quite expensive, and not very exciting, which could be a problem this far down the Holyrood Road at night. BUT we would highly... more
Good hotel, but.....does it deserve the 4 stars?
We stayed last weekend in August, rooms are adequate and clean. and location close to Old Town. Edinburgh open top tourbus stops outside. Concierge very efficient. AC seemed to only work on warm. Lack of tea and milk in the room, we had to ask for more on both evenings. The room was not serviced until 4pm, so we had to sit around in the lounge instead of relaxing and cleaning up before an evening out. We were disappointed at the lack of "scottishness", little evidence of tartan, no porridge, no haggis, most staff were not even... more
Friendly staff, but maintenance and housekeeping needs improvement
We stayed at the Macdonald Holyrood for 3 nights in August 2005, it was our first trip to the UK. The staff was very friendly, the room size was adequate, and the location on a side-street made it very quiet, except for the Edinburgh seagulls which make quite a racket every morning starting at about 5am. We did have a few complaints on the room: The AC was weak (only got down to about 80 degrees F), lots of black mildew in the shower, previous guests hair in the tub and on the towels, toilet didn't flush properly, the bathroom door didn't... more
Enjoy My Stay - Hotel had everything I expected and more
On a friends advise we stayed at the Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh and felt spoiled. The hotel is a 4star with an indoor pool, sauna, gym, steam-room and hydro-spa. The piano bar and restaurant are first class. Our room was clean and well stocked with a mini bar and every possible accessory we could require during our stay. The rooms are delightfully decorated and the hotel provides complimentary bottles of water every day. The location is down the hill from the centre of town and the Royal Mile..but is no more than 15mins walk. The... more
