After several exceptionally poor dealings with this hotel I am completely appauled by the customer service and arrogance of the staff of the Roxburghe Hotel. I found it interesting that at the end of these dealings that the Roxburge believed that they value their customer... more

Excellent!
My brother took me to Scotland and we stayed at the Roxburghe for a week. He had been some years earlier and stayed at the Balmoral. His reaction was that the only difference between the two was the price! An aside to the negative reviews, I'd like to say that our last night in Scotland was at the Holiday Inn at Glasgow airport. The servivce was deplorable, the staff was not friendly nor helpful. The bar staff in particular was exceptionally poor. To those that found fault with the Roxburghe, I'd suggest that they stay at the... more
Hit and Miss: Check your invoice carefully and ask for the new wing!
For users who have bid on a hotel in Edinburgh and ended up in the Roxburghe, be aware of the following IMPORTANT things: 1. The hotel has essentially 2 wings, one very old wing and one fairly new wing. You will most likely be much happier in a room in the new wing, and the price is no different, it seems to be the luck of the draw. In two separate stays there, we got the old wing on one stay and the new wing on the other: so don't hesitate to ask for a room in the new wing. 2. We woke up and our receipt on both separate stays had... more
Not Bad But...
The rooms were very good and the location excellent but the breakfast was probably the worst I have experienced. If you at not down before eight then the foods is cold and not very appetising.
Great for the business traveler or tourists
I booked this hotel for a business trip to the Edinburgh International Science Festival. I am quite surprised by the number of negative reviews this hotel received as my stay was nothing but enjoyable. Having a teamaker and shortbread every morning was a wonderful touch (one not extended often, if ever, in American hotels). My room was cleaned beautifully each day. I ordered room service several times and was never disappointed; the bookmaker steak sandwich was my favorite! I stayed in room 306 and had a nice view of the castle as well.... more
Excellent Location
The central location of this charming hotel was very convenient. A quick walk to the Royal Mile and many attractions. The clean room was quaint but with all the necessary amenities. The staff, especially the concierge, James, was courteous, helpful and informative. Breakfast was average, served buffet style. We had a very pleasant stay and would definitely return if we are lucky enough to visit Edinburgh again.
Great place to stay
I spent last week staying here for work and may need to spend the next 6mths here. I had one of the newer rooms at the back of the hotel on the 2nd floor. The rooms were large enough and all the fixtures and fittings were what I would expect from a 4star hotel. The breakfast was good and the dinner meals were also reasonable. But what really impressed me with this hotel was the service. The service matches and even exceeds that of the Waldof Astoria in New York where I have stayed several times. The staff are extremely helpful... more
not for the romantic
My wife and I visited the Roxburghe hotel for the purpose of a romantic break(Feb 05). Although we enjoyed Edinburgh the hotel was in our opinion geared towards the business person. Our room was on the third floor above the main entrance. We found the room quite nippy and drafty and the decor was in need of a re vamp.Breakfast was average and we was told to dine in the lounge because the restaurant was full(There were several free tables but who were they for?).Dinner was not particularly too special either. In our opinion you are... more
Excellent
Great place to stay, fantastic food, helpful staff, spacious clean rooms. Luxury bathroom. Nice views of the castle. I do not understand the negative reviews, we had such a nice time. Would definately stay here again.
Agree with previous review AWFUL!
Have to agree with the other review, we stayed around the same time and I have never been treated as badly in any hotel that I have stayed in. The Central Heating didn't work, in February, when we were moved to a different, smaller room, the radiator in that room didn't work either. We had breakfast in a freezing cold conservatory and had a 20 minute argument with the desk staff about the terms and conditions of our booking. We too complained and were eventually offered a discount on another Macdonald hotel, we won't be using it.
