Apex International Hotel Reviews
Jan 2006, COPEY
The Apex International is a clean comfortable hotel in the lively Grassmarket area of Edinburgh. The lobby is bright and modern and check in took just a couple of minutes on a busy Thursday evening. My room was a standard double. The rooms are all modern and tastefully... more

spledid views - location - rooms!
from GrettaUK
my husband and I stayed at the apex on the reviews of past visitors - and we were not disappointed! we were going to the British Open but could not find vacancies in Fife, and I am so glad we ended up in Edinburgh. Our room on the 5th floor had the most incredible views of Edinburgh Castle! The rooms were adorable - great modern decor - nice tv's - and loved the rubber ducky in the bathroom! I WILL be coming back to this exact hotel when my sister visits - WE LOVED IT! Oh - the location is PERFECT - walking distance from everything you want to see in Edinburgh Gretta
Great location!
from Colleyville_traveler
This hotel has all of the modern facilities and a great location. Easy walk to all of the major sites and shopping. Currently building a workout facility that should be ready around fall. We did have some noise in the morning from birds. We would stay here again.
Convenient, modern, and comfortable
from CookieWaters
Right on Grassmarket which is near the foot of the Edinburgh Castle. Busy street in front of hotel but off street parking is available. Good restaruants all around. Rooms were very modern and quiet. Hotel is more of a business type but plenty big and modern. Staff was very helpful. I would go back. We also stayed at the Holyrood Aparthotel and I like it better.
Loved it!

My boyfriend and I stayed here in May for 2 nights as we were attending a wedding reception. The hotel was fantastic! The rooms were really nicely decorated and very modern, with a gorgeous view of the castle. The rubber duck was a nice touch! Food was excellent, staff were excellent and the way that they laid on the reception was also excellent! I have nothing bad to say at all!! We will definitely stay there again if we ever go back to Edinburgh!
Total disappointment
from Cenote
I stayed at the Apex with my husband, my mom and 2 kids. I paid a bit more than I had planned on paying to assure getting a good hotel. We stayed in two rooms and both were utterly disgusting. The rooms were filthy and the decor bland and depressing. The bathroom doors around the handles and all the fixtures were grim and there was hair in one of the tubs. The people at the front desk were indifferent and even cold at times. We almost missed our flight home because service trucks were blocking the parking lot and refused to move until they were done unloading. The hotel staff did nothing. I am not a hotel snob, but this hotel is far below what I consider average. Except for location there is nothing to recommend about it.
A lovely stylish hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
We've just come back from a great 2 day stay in the Apex International in Edinburgh. We booked online and were not quite sure what to expect but it's a really fantastic, comfortable, stylish hotel with excellent friendly staff. Room was clean and well equipped. A nice central area of Edinburgh, you can walk to Princes Street & the railway station within 10-15 minutes, and the hotel is surrounded by great bars and restaurants. (Particularly recommend the characterful pizza restaurant Mammas opposite!) We managed to get a room with a view of the castle and it was absolutely lovely. Breakfast (which wasn't included in our room price) was pricey but delicious and was served on the 5th floor of the hotel in a nice restaurant area which also has great panoramic views of the castle. We'd definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay in Edinburgh!
Dirty, Dirty, Dirty: Apex International was way below expectations

Where can I start with the review of this hotel....I did read everyone's reviews before booking this hotel so I was really surprised at the quality of the rooms and the general feeling about the place. The one thing that was fairly accurate about the hotel is the fantastic view of the castle if you have a front-facing room (which we didn't, but our friends did) and from the rooftop restaurant. With our room, it was tiny. I think that we had a handicap room because the bathroom was large and had railings around the bathroom. However, I don't know how anyone with a wheelchair can get into the bedroom-part because it was really small. My dorm room in college was bigger. Here were my major complaints: (1) mildew around the shower floor - the shower curtain was mildewy and stank so I asked them to give me a replacement, which they did. The hotel staff couldn't do anything about the shower floor - months and possibly years of not good cleaning probably caused the mildew to be embedded in the floor. It was disgusting. (2) overall sense of uncleanliness and hygiene. The room and bathroom just felt dirty. (3) No air circulation in the room unless you open the windows. When you do open the windows, the construction and party-going crowds from all the pubs were so loud that sleeping was difficult. We had a rear-facing room, overlooking the parking lot. I can't imagine how loud it must have been for the rooms overlooking the pubs and restaurants. (4) One other thing about the bathroom - the granite countertop was two separate pieces that aren't quite joined so there was a gaping hole in the between the two pieces so it looked a little tacky. Restaurant (rooftop one): Breakfast was terrible so unless it's included in your rate, don't waste your money. It was £12 for a full cooked breakfast and the continental buffet. I guess that you do get what you pay for. It had to be the worst breakfast I've ever had - both my husband I didn't finish or attempt to even eat half of it. Breakfast is normally our favorite meal. The continental buffet was sparse and looked pretty unhygienic so we passed on it, except for the juice. The view was nice but it's really not worth it. Service: Not brilliant and not particularly accomodating. One interesting thing to note is that this hotel has done very little disaster planning. There was an incident on one of the nights where there was a fire or something because the fire brigades were called in. I noticed that when we got to the front of the hotel, the staff was all outside while the guests were still piling out. Don't expect any of them to be trying to help guests out of the hotel in case of emergency. You're really on your own. Location: Good location - a short walk to the castle and Royal Mile. The duck was a cute touch, but we left ours because I really didn't know if it was clean or not. To sum, we paid £90/night - it seems a bargain but remember that you get what you pay for. In the future, I will think twice before going for a bargain place. The Apex tries to be cool like one of those cool boutique hotels, but it doesn't quite live up to it....more focus should be paid to keeping it clean.
Fantastic hotel- April 2005
from RachelTLondon
I stayed at the Apex International while on business for 1 night in April 2005. The hotel was in a fantastic location and my hotel room had a great view of the Castle. I was really pleased with everything about the hotel from the staff, to the quality of the room and the breakfast was excellent! The free rubber duckie in the bathroom was a right laugh! Fully recommend this hotel to all business travellers and holiday makers alike. Rachel
Good party spot
from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel was very nice inside--clean rooms, good water pressure, helpful staff. Despite its great location with castle views, it included garage parking and breakfast (left early, so cannot comment on breakfast). The street noise was very disruptive with the windows open, but didn't disrupt my sleep with the windows closed. If you are a light sleeper--definitely get a room at the back of the hotel, NOT with castle view. The directions to the hotel include a road that is pedestrian only access during the day, do be sure to have a map for alternative route. Several great restuarants and pubs across the street--but adds to the noise.
Adore the Apex
from hotwheelz7
I have stayed at the Apex International twice now and both times were wonderful. The rooms were large, very clean, and the service was excellent. Room service even brought me a glass of ice at 3:00 in the morning! The bathrooms are extremely large, especially for the U.K.! If you are traveling as a couple, definitely spring for the king size room because it's worth it!
