Disaster at the Clarendon
We had a disasterous experience at the Clarendon. After booking four rooms for four nights through a travel agent and prepaying for them over two months in advance, we arrived from the U.S. to find that the Clarendon had been overbooked and our rooms were not available. It was at the height of the tourist season, accommodations were very hard to come by, and we were traveling with my father who has need of a wheelchair. It was a nightmare trying to find suitable alternate accommodations. The desk clerk on duty at the Clarendon took pity... more
breakfast is not great
We have stayed at many of the Grange London Hotels. We checked into the Clarendon on 3rd March staying 1 night for £69 inc. continental breakfast. The room allocated to us was extremely good and exceeded our expectations. Checkin and checkout was exemplary on this occasion. We were lucky! This hotel in very well located and in a quiet street. We slept very well indeed. The breakfast team served breakfast very well in true 4 star surroundings. However, it was the usual "4 star" Grange London hotel breakfast - basic, dull and uninteresting.... more
Not bad
The Grange Clarendon is a nice hotel, very conveniently located at walking distance to many sights. The bedroom was very small but with nice furniture, comfortable bed and nothing to say about the bathroom. The staff is very friendly but I have to say that quality of service is highly improvable, specially at breakfast - having to sit at dirty tables, waiting a long time for someone to come and offer tea/coffee when there was plenty of people waiting the breakfast room - I would say that is due to a lack of efficiency and organization. All... more
Nice Room, shame about the breakfast
The Clarendon is easy to find - just a short walk from Russell Square. Set on a very quiet road, the hotel is very unassuming and you are met by a flight of stairs. Reception is to the right of this, and a previous reviewer commented on the fact that you could go up the stairs and have access to the hotel, without anyone challenging you. Having checked in (with the reception area full of other travellers luggage, a lift took us to our room on the third floor. We had asked for a quiet room, and the hotel supplied this without fuss, or... more
Good quality short-stay hotel
The hotel is situated just south of Russell Square and appears to have been renovated fairly recently – it’s a row of three comfortable nineteenth-century terraced houses converted into a hotel. As has been observed by other contributors, its rack rate is more costly than the hotel really justifies, but late bookings are much more reasonable (we paid £69 per night for bed and continental breakfast). The room, on the top floor, was small (a gap of about twelve inches between the foot of the bed and the opposite wall), but very... more
Never again
It is not clear to me what happened between the visits of the reviewers below and our stay at the Clarendon. In any case: staying at the Clarendon was anything but memorable. We had explicitly and politely asked for a quiet room, away from the elevator. We got a room (number 8) in front of the (noisy) elevator, next to a shared toilet and - even worse - below the bar and the kitchen. Although the hotel has carpet in every place imaginable, this was clearly not the case in the rooms above our ceiling. There was constant and very... more
Very good option for London
I booked the hotel through one of the internet late bookings agency, the room price was GBP 80 (The rack rate is almost triple - and that would be exceedingly overpriced). Although I booked a single, on arrival they gave me a double room, no extra charge. The room was nice, even offered some space (which is rare in my experience of London hotels). It looked quite recently renovated, nice and clean, good (and, again, almost spacious) bath-room (with good toiletries supplied as well); the usual tea-making facilities, ironing board, even a... more
Exceptional hotel!
We loved our stay! Beautiful rooms, great breakfast and lovely location near Covent Gardens. We got a super deal by booking this hotel through the budget hotel reservations booth at Victoria Station.
Very happy with this hotel
Stayed at this hotel in late May of 2005. Stayed in Rm 2, with my spouse and 2 sons ages 9 and 12. Hotel looks to be recently remodeled. We had a very quiet room. Had a kingsized bed and 2 fold outs for the boys. Great location. Just minutes from British History Museum and very convinent to bus service. Numerous places nearby to shop or eat/ drink. Price was 75 pounds per night. Staff very pleasant. No AC, but it was 90 one of the days we stayed and it was not needed. Room we stayed at opens to a garden. Very happy with this... more
Very convenient and nice stay in London!
I couldn't find any review before staying. But it was really nice hotel to stay in downtown London. Probably it's more like a B&B. Actually at first I booked with Lancaster hotel, but ended up with staying at Clarendon Hotel. They are on the same street, and are managed by the same hotel group. It is only two blocks away from the British Musuem. 5-minute walk from either Russell Square station or Holborn station, excellent location! It was a series of Victorian House, called Bloomsbery collection (the official name is longer...)... more
