Only good thing about this hotel was its location
I was fortunate enough to stay at the Sheraton Grand through Starwood points but I think it would be a waste of money to pay for a hotel room here. First off, I was quite annoyed at the amount of noise in this hotel. Perhaps they just have thin walls, but in a hotel that charges this much, that shouldn't even be an issue. I sleep with earplugs all the time, but could even hear the noise with earplugs on. Also, although I requested a queen-sized bed, I was given two single beds -- twin-sized. They were not very comfortable, either. The bathroom was small and nothing special. My "view" was awful - it was basically looking at a roof-type thing...definitely not very nice. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to get the view overlooking the beautiful Castle -- oh well. I just kept my curtains shut all the time. Service was pretentious -- unnecessarily so! The only saving thing about this hotel was its location -- minutes away from Princes Street, the main street in Edinburgh, and so central to all the sights (the Castle, Princes St. Gardens, near Edinburgh University, Old Mile, Georgian Square, Calton Hill, etc.). I was able to walk everywhere -- and although I would be very tired at the end of the day, getting around without public transportation was fine! I would recommend staying at another hotel, however. It certainly is not worth the hype nor the money!
Very comfortable
My husband and I stayed at the Sheraton Grand on our last night in Scotland. It is very well located - a five minute walk to Princes Street, for example. We had a standard room, on the back of the hotel. It was well-appointed and comfortable. It was also very quiet, which we appreciated! We ate dinner in The Grill - the best restaurant in the hotel. We had an excellent meal and not too expensive, considering UK prices! The service was also excellent. We took the buffet breakfast in the Terrace restaurant before going to the airport. This was also good, but I thought expensive for what it was. I would definitely stay there again, should we go to Edinburgh again. The hotel doesn't have any local character but it is very comfortable and the service is very good.
It was OK
Stayed one night - the entrance, bar and public areas are very grand and lovely to look at, however the rooms are just OK. After staying in several 5 star hotels around the world I would not not rate the hotel rooms as 5 star. Our room was looking a little dated, the bathroom was very small with plastic mable effect sink, the bed was very comfortable and huge but with two single quilts, the view from our room was of some office blocks and a car park. The breakfast was nice - large selection, the staff were helpful however some were rather snotty! The hotel is nice but very over priced.
5-star price - 3-star quality
My wife and I found our honeymoon stay at the Sheraton very disappointing. For £340 per night we expected excellence across the board; instead we found most aspects of the hotel distinctly average. Staff were disinterested and only superficially attentive; the conceirge continuned with a personal call while I tried in vain to attract his attention; the cooks in the breakfast restaurant disappeared regularly, thwarting those who want omlettes or waffles; and the glorified "business centre" consisted of four slow and often broken-down computers, only two of which offered internet access! None of these issues on their own amount to much; but one doesn't expect to encounter them at a 5-star hotel of a major brand chain. Though offering a great location in the centre of the city, and linked to the truly wonderful One Spa, the Sheraton in Edinburgh is anything but Grand. Save yourself a few hundred pounds and go 4-star elsewhere.
Great Hotel
We stayed hear for the weekend and had a fantastic time hotel staff where excelent and very helpful we arrived earley and they did everything possible to get us an early check in room had a great time in the spa too I can highley recomend this hotel
Taking the michael
We are Edinburgh residents but booked a suite here for the night after our wedding. It was not cheap and perhaps we have since been spoilt by the service we had in proper 5 star hotels in South East Asia on our honeymoon but we found the service to be poor. We arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning- no-one greeted us or offered to help with baggage until we had checked in ( check in staff were fine, and luggage brought up to room). The room itself was spacious but decor outdated and the bathroom was 3 star quality and desperately in need of an upgrade. We ordered room service a couple of times- apart from a few inaccuracies this was fine and the service ok. The best thing about this hotel is One Spa where we spent most of the Sunday- service there was good. The main gripe we had was to return to our room at 3.30 in time for the 4pm checkout ( which was part of the deal when booking) to snippy messages from reception telling us checkout after 12 would incur a £20 per hour charge. We phoned to remind them of the deal to be told ' oh that's right- not many people pick up on that'. Apart from the Spa which is truly unlike anywhere else, this hotel is completely unexceptional and made us embarrassed for Scotland to think that it pretends to be top end.
3.5 stars out of 5
This was a nice hotel. We stayed here as part of a Starwood employee discount rate so for the money we paid it was great. To pay full price, it was good, maybe very good, but not great. The staff was fantastic and very friendly and helpful, especially the front desk and concierge. Rooms were clean, and bathrooms were very clean, but the comforters on the bed were ugly. Maybe they were trying to portray the Scottish theme or something. It didn't work for he rooms. The city of Edinburgh, and Scotland speaks for itself. As a side note, anyone looking to see the Highlands, and a short time frame is critical, the Gray Line bus tour to the Highlands is a long day, but well worth it. Guide was great, funny, and very informative to Scotland's history. Showed real enthusiam for his job. The concierge can set it up for you. 30 pounds a person for 12 hour trip (8am-8pm) and can pick up at the hotel. It was one of the highlights of the entire trip to the UK, which says a lot.
Fantastic Spa but Hotel not 5 Star!!
Stayed here for 5 nights over New Year and had a fantastic time although this was mostly due to the Spa facilities. On arrival we had been allocated a smoking room which smelt disgusting and wasn't very clean. I was very disappointed as we had paid a lot of money to stay somewhere special for New Year and the room was just like a standard 3* hotel. However, the Spa was amazing - it was just a shame the out-door hydrotheraphy pool was closed as that was what I was most looking forward to! I would stay here again if I could get a good deal but I would definately not pay full price as it is not worth it!
Fantastic Spa, Hotel over-priced
Has its ups and downs. I stay here about 6 times a year for work. The spa is the best feature. I like the hotel a lot, but it is vastly overpriced. It needs a face-lift. My only gripes about the room is that some are getting shabby looking and the showers have absolutely dreadful water pressure. Do not get room service: the portions are small and incredibly expensive. The beds are amongst the most comfortable in any hotel I have stayed at. I always sleep well here. Keep in mind that with current exchange rates a full cooked breakfast is about $32 per person before tip. Tourists: Great location for sightseeing.
Stay Here
Although I did not stay on business, I would describe this hotel as Business 5 Star - The staff were mostly excellent and would sort out any request, the room/suite was very welcoming and had all the extras such as bathrobes, slippers, mineral water magazines etc. The only let down was the bathroom was in need of a re-model as it looked quite 80's and not very 5 star. Also the outside of the Hotel was not as grand as it should be - the windows look a bit out of place - but I am very funny about the outsides of hotels - I dont like staying at hotels with scafolding up or in the middle of refurbishments - and I was happy enough staying here. I wouldnt break your back trying to get an invite into the executive lounge though - its only open 2 hours in the morning and 2 at night and is nothing to write home about - Stay here - the staff are wonderful and the hotel is great!
