Jan 2005, Miss S Orr

Returned last night, Thursday 20 January from Puerto Del Carmen.
La Penita apartments are excellent value for money. They are very well equipped, including a hair drier, a microwave with a combined grill & a hob. There wasn’t an oven, however, so if you are eating in your range of foods are more limited. You are provided with a dishtowel, which is changed regularly, a sponge with scrubber & washing up liquid. There is also a large TV, which is free of charge. However, you are limited to a few channels.
There is a self-service laundry, within the complex. A wash is 3.50 euros, which includes your powder. The drier costs 2.50 euros. We didn’t use it, however, as the apartment is also equipped with a clothes airier to allow you to dry your clothing. You can also hire the use of an iron and ironing board from the reception.
There is a safe facility in your apartment, which is around 20 euros for 2 wks.
The apartments are spacious and cleaned 5 days per week. The towels are changed every 2nd day. You can request your apartment to be cleaned at a certain time, and the cleaning staff will try to accommodate you in their schedule.
The grounds of La Penita are very well maintained and extremely clean. The pool is cleaned every day and there are plenty of beds available for sunbathing.
The pool bar has a good menu and the food is delicious. It is also good value for money. There are plenty of tables, a TV and a pool table within the bar area. Food is not served after 5pm.
We were very impressed by all the staff of La Penita. They were all very friendly & polite. The reception staff were extremely friendly and informative. They have a folder, which they can refer to for any enquiries that you may have. We made enquiries about the cost of taxis to various parts of the island and the costs of the buses. This lets you decide in advance how you want to travel around the island, without having to haggle with the taxi drivers.
There are a few different entrances to the apartments. The complex is fenced off and the gates are locked from 11pm until 7am. You are provided with a key for the gates. During that time there is a security guard in the complex. The reception is staffed from 7am until 11pm.
We found the Netto supermarket to be the best for variety & it was very clean. To reach it, you walk out the back entrance at the La Penita sign and turn left walking to the bottom of the road. It is on the right side of the street just before you reach the main strip. If you need a haircut there is a good hairdressers/barbers just before the Netto supermarket.
The apartments are in a central location on the Puerto Del Carmen strip. When you exit the reception door and proceed down the stairs to your left you are on the main strip. The strip is about 5km from one end to the other and is filled on both sides of the road with a variety of restaurants, bars & shops.
On the opposite side, however, below, some of the shops & restaurants the beach & the ocean spreads out.
If you proceed along the strip turning to the right when you exit the apartments you will reach the Old Town area of Puerto del Carmen. There is a shopping complex with The Body Shop and Zara to name a few familiar names. You can proceed further down to the port to the harbour area, which has a variety of bars and restaurants. At night, this is lit up and is beautiful.
We ate in a variety of restaurants and tried a few bars. There are a chain of restaurants known as Lani's which are more expensive. However, all were much the same in price & offered much of the same food. Our favourite bar, however, was The Hawaiian Bar, which is to the left as you leave the apartments on the other side of the road. The staff are very friendly, and there is a DJ on Friday & Saturdays. Beware, however, of the free shots, you could become drunk very quickly!
The local buses are excellent. We travelled in to Arrecife a few times. The cost is 1.30 euros each way. Prices were cheaper here in the bars and restaurants, probably as there are more locals in Arrecife. Some beautiful sights. However, everything, apart from a few clothes shops and bars, closes at 1.30pm and opens at 4pm. This includes all the tourist attractions.
Also travelled to the market, 9am to 2pm, in Teguise on Sunday. Wasn’t that impressed with the stalls, but the local shops in Teguise are also open. These shops were more impressive. They had a variety of different goods, which were locally made. Many lovely cafes, restaurants and bars in Teguise. The buses do get full going to the market and returning, but you will get there and back safely.
I went on my own to the market and wasn’t harassed by any of the stall vendors. I was just polite and firm.
We will definitely return to Puerto Del Carmen. This time, we’ll hire a car. See some more of the tourist attractions. The roads aren’t that complex on the island.
There are lots of bike hire shops, but mainly for mountain bike hire.
The weather was a bit disappointing for us. We will not go back in January. We did, however, have 9 scorching days, but our last few days were overcast. Best time for weather we’ve been told is March to October.
Do take jumpers and thick jackets at this time of year. It is cold at night. The island is windy, but it didn’t stop us from doing anything that we intended.
Loved this holiday and will go back to La Penita.

Just returned from our holiday in...

Sep 2004, Miss R V Stack

Just returned from our holiday in Lanzarote. My boyfriend and I stayed in apartments called La Penita right in the centre of Puerto Del Carmen. We booked it with someone who owned one of the apartments there as it was about £500 cheaper than booking it with MyTravel that do the same apartments.
Well what can I say... apart from its a shame to be back in England and back to reality!! These apartments are in the new town of Puerto del Carmen and just set back off the main road. There is a spar, netto and English pub all across the road and a short walk around the corner leads you to the main street with hundreds of bars and restaurants.
The apartments itself are massive with bedroom, bathroom, living areas and balcony. They were well equipped with cutlery, microwave, kettle, toaster, cooking rings etc. you name it, and it was there!! Complex was clean and tidy, pool cleaned daily, sunbeds were not unlocked till around 9am everyday to avoid people from reserving them with towels. Pool bar sold everything, opened at 9am-9pm, breakfast served til 1pm and other food til 5pm. Full English breakfast was gorgeous and only 3 euros. Reception staff were also very helpful, booking us excursions and taxis home to the airport.
There are hundreds of places to eat in the resort. The most popular chain of restaurants was called Lani's they had different themed restaurants like Italian, seafood, Indian and steak houses. They were a tiny bit more expensive than other restaurants but well worth the money. We ate in a different restaurant every night and never had a complaint about any one of them. Food was lovely and always quick service. The best place we found for English food was the pub at the back of the apartments called Mucky Duck, it showed all sports like football, tennis, boxing and the food was out of this world if you wanted something typically English.
Market in Teguise on a Sunday wasn’t much cop, had all the lucky men selling their replica gear and trying to rip you off of course and not forgetting them mithering the life out of you. There were hundreds of stalls all selling the same stuff really. If you were intending to go for something in particular then it’s fine and good for haggling. Bus costs only 2.25 each and takes about 25mins we got a taxi it cost us £15 so we got the bus home. Its only open from about 9am-2pm so get there early although the buses are packed and don’t tend to stop. We also went to Fuerteventura for the day with a company called Princesa Ico. This cost us 43 euros each. Coach picked us up from near the hotel at 8.30am took us to the harbour, boat crossing took around an hour. Coach picked us up at the other end and took us to Corralejo centre.
Shops were pretty much the same as in PDC. Market there on a Monday again same as Teguise. We had around 2hrs to look round. Back on the coach then to the sand dunes where we stopped for 20mins, took pictures walk around etc, off for full 3 course lunch all included in the price of the trip and then a chance to lye on the white sandy beaches for the afternoon. Back home on the boat we stopped and fed fish and had a look through the glass bottom boat. Well worth doing, don’t think we would have known where to start if we had gone it alone.
Would definitely go back to these apartments and area again was in a perfect central location. Would recommend to anyone!!!

Excellent there was so much fun, the staff were friendly, the pool was refreshingly COLD !! The bar was so amazing the chocolate lollies were lovely. La Penita was suitable for ALL ages. Close to bars, restaurants, shops (super market 3 minute walk away ! !)
This was the whole family’s 1st time to Lanzarote
It was quite windy at nights so you might need a jacket most nights but at least it feels like you have not forgotten anything!
They also had showers so if your flight was at say .... 5pm roughly the bus picks you up at 3.
DEFINITELY BRILLIANT !!!!!

Stayed at la Penita Apartments in...

Jun 2004, Mrs C Perry

Stayed at la Penita Apartments in June and found them to be extremely clean, well equipped with toaster, coffee peculator, microwave etc. Our apartment did not face the pool, but it was very private and very sunny. There is a small snack bar which shuts at approx. 7.00pm, but by then most people have gone out.
Staff very nice, supermarkets quite near and the beach less than a hundred yards away. First time to Puerto del Carmen, but liked it very much, was not too quiet but not too noisy, and lots of nice restaurants, particularly in the Port which is a short taxi ride away, although you can walk it but it takes about half an hour. Would definitely go back to these apartments, a thoroughly nice holiday.

Just returned from a February half...

Feb 2004, Mr J Dearden

Just returned from a February half term family break to Lanzarote. Stayed at the La Penita Apartments in Puerto Del Carmen. This was our first holiday in Lanzarote and we enjoyed it enormously. The weather was sunny and warm all week though continually windy (you certainly needed a pullover or jacket in the evening).
We were delighted with La Penita. The apartments were very spacious, comfortable and clean. Only drawback for us was the absence of a microwave. The pool was terrific (cleaned every day) with lots of sun loungers available. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
La Penita is in a very good location - handy for shops, restaurants and bars with the main beach just a short stroll away (4 loungers and two umbrellas cost 12 euros). Our favourite restaurants were the Lani Italian and Lani Grill (next to each other on the corner of Chalana with the main Avenida de las Playas) and La Brasa Grill (on the opposite corner - better value for money, better wine though sometimes a little slow to serve). Our favourite bars were the Sol y Sombre (accessed from one of the side entrances to La Penita at the Reception end) and Route 66 bar opposite the main Playa Grand beach.
Ate a number of good value "Full English" breakfasts at various places in the resort all of which were delicious. Was unimpressed with the harbour end of Puerto Del Carmen. Apart from the harbourside restaurants the area seemed a bit of a dump and I'm glad we didn't stay over on that side of the resort.
Of the three Crazy Golf courses we played on we found the one across from the San Antonio Hotel to be the best though it is a bit of a walk to get to. Outside of Puerto Del Carmen a visit to the Timanfaya National Park is a must. Absolutely awesome (and the camel ride's good fun too). I'm glad that we went on a coach tour of the Park because I wouldn't have enjoyed driving through the lava flows (only seemed to be the coach parties doing this anyway) and would have missed the sights through having to concentrate on driving. The green lagoon at El Golfo was worth seeing as was Jameos del Agua at the northern end of the island.
The Sunday Market at Teguise wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I'm convinced if you've been to one market whether on Tenerife, Ibiza, Greece or anywhere else in mainland Europe, they're all the same. The bartering is always enjoyable but the goods always seem to be the same. We found the food served at the mobile food caravans at the market a little expensive and poor value (2 bacon rolls, 2 coffees and a Sprite for 17 euros) though I never thought to barter here! Overall we were really impresssed with Lanzarote in general and Pueto Del Carmen & the La Penita Apartments in particular and would certainly holiday there again in future.
