Malmaison Glasgow Reviews

Aug 2005, Mr J Connolly

Wow! What a hotel! My wife and I were on our way for a tour of the Highlands and decided to try Glasgow instead of Edinburgh as a base - we were recommended to try the Mal there and it was fantastic, our room was brand new and absolutely huge. The staff couldn’t do enough... more

Terrible night at Malmaison
I had booked a night at the Malmaison Hotel for my husband's birthday and splashed out on the "Big YIn" suite as a treat - at a cost of £295 per night (double the price of some rooms in the hotel). What a disappointment and waste of money I felt it was. Depite the price, the room does not have air conditioning and was unbearably hot. There was a rather noisy fan in the room (others have probably had a similar problem) - and the choice was not to sleep because of the heat, or not to sleep because of the noise of fan. I was very pleased that we hadn't booked to stay for two nights. There was a huge bed, huge sofa and tartan bath in the suite, but I found that this made the room feel somewhat cramped. On the plus side we would say that the breakfast was really good although overall the hotel was a disappointment.
Will never return!
We booked this hotel back in November 2005 for a Robbie Williams gig. The only rooms available were suites, so we chose the duplex suite at £225 per night (eek!!). This price doesn't include breakfast, which was £10 for a continental breakfast. As our train was arriving at 12.30 we were told our room would probably be ready by 1pm. However after the 20 min walk from the station, our room wasn't ready until 3pm, so we dumped our bags and walked back into the city centre. Our room was really modern with 2 suede couches, marble tops in the bathroom, wool cushions etc and the bed was an oversize king bed in a seperate bedroom upstairs. The hotel itself seemed really dark and claustrophobic. We never ate in the restaurant so cannot comment on the food. We returned to our room at 12.30am after the gig, very hungry, looking forward to some room service which is supposed to be served from 11am until 6am. After phoning to order a 'Mal burger', I was told the kitchen had closed at 11pm and a limited menu was available (but they weren't sure what!). After a few minutes they phoned back and offered me a ham and mustard sandwich, or a beef and horseradish sandwich. So, after ordering a sandwich, it arrived 45 minutes later at 1.15am. The next problem was sleeping. The rooms were VERY hot with no air conditioning and on a busy road, so we couldn't leave the windows open. Our room was also extremely noisy from what sounded like a central heating system, so in all I think we had about 3 hours sleep. One night was enough in this hotel, and after being recommended the Malmaison chain by friends, I won't be rushing to return!
Extremely disappointed with this hotel
My husband and I were looking forward to a luxurious stay at this contemporary hotel after a week travelling around Scotland. We were initially given a room in the old building but asked for another room because the sash windows were broken and couldn't be opened. The second room, in the new building, had new windows which could easily be opened but unfortunately overlooked a busy street so had to be closed at night and although double-glazed, were not sealed properly so that it was very noisy. The rooms were uncomfortably hot as there was no air-conditioning. This was mentioned in a previous review which we had disregarded as, after all, this is Glasgow and we did not expect it to be hot at night. The room and bathroom were nicely decorated but very small and without anything extra, e.g. robes, biscuits with the tea tray etc. Also, the bed was accessorised with wool cushions and a blanket which were musty and aggravated my asthma. Having stayed in a fantastic hotel in Inverness (the Rocpool Reserve) and having had great expectations of the Malmaison chain, I was very disappointed and won't stay in one of their hotels again.
