An excellent first-time Al experience
We have just returned from our first experience of an all-inclusive holiday. It was a 4-day trip arranged by a local travel company. We were met at the airport by a very friendly and helpful courier and the transfer to the hotel was quick and efficient. We had been informed that we may only receive the offer of cold snacks upon arrival but were, in fact, invited to check in, take our bags to our rooms (which were excellent, clean, large and well furnished)and then proceed to the restaurant where there was hot food available - albeit bacon, sausage, eggs etc - but most gratefully received. We had photos taken for the Al card and settled in to have a drink at the bar. The following day we took the oppportunity to book a day trip to Barcelona and a half-day trip to Tossa de Mar. We took a stroll along the promenade and back through the town of Calella to the hotel for lunch. There was hot soup, cold salads with various meats etc and a hot buffet. Loads of sweets and fresh fruit also available. Drinks were served at the table on production of the ID card and our glasses were topped up as often as requested. Evening dinner was served again with hot soup, salad bar and hot dishes. As with lots of food in Spain the food is not always 'red hot' as we are used to in England, but there were no complaints from us or our fellow diners. The entertainment was a disco on the first night which we were a bit late arriving to appreciate, a live group on Tuesday night who were very good. On Wednesday there was another disco - which we didn't enjoy, too loud and not to our taste - and on Thursday, the same disco accompanied by some excellent flamenco dancing. The dancers got everyone up at the end of their show to dance and the disco did seem to pick up a bit with quite a few people dancing. We really appreciated the Al bar. The staff were extremely busy and kept the service going well all evening, considering the queue went nearly to reception at times! They were polite and friendly, as were all the staff, and given the variety of drinks served did very well. We would have no hesitation in going to the Amaika again, but would probably not go at the height of the summer when it might be a bit crowded!
Great Winter Break
Just returned from a 4day break with my husband and parents. The Titanic theme works very well, though a manky rug and very dusty plant let down the otherwise spotless reception area! We paid £125 each for AI, including flights and transfers, an absoloute bargain. However, had we gone in Summer, I would have been seriously dissapointed as the pool is small, with virtually no lounging area considering the size of the hotel. So my advice is avoid it in summer. Also, it is in a rather run-down area, but we didnt have to go out at night as the entertainment was adequate. Something for the kids early on, and an outside entertainer and disco later for the adults. The atmosphere is friendly and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Staff couldnt be faulted, and the naval uniforms look great. In the restaurant drinks were free to AI guests, which was a pleasant surprise as most hotels I have stayed at, drinks with meals are extra. The food could have been hotter, but microwaves are provided, not ideal I know, or you could just wait a while until the trays were replaced. Calella is cerainly not for those seeking breathtaking views, the beach is across a railway line and dual carriageway! But for a winter break its fine. If your stay includes a Sunday, I would suggest that you hop on the train to Barcelona 5.50euro return, takes about 50mins due to all the stops. Get off at Catalunya, which is the city centre. Loads of sale bargains to be had in the shops. But please take care, especially in the station, and do not visit the toilets alone. There were quite a few obvious undesireable types hanging around looking for opportunities to rob people. They will ask for a light to try to get you to open your bag, please walk away from these people, stay together and be safe. On a lighter note, the only other thing to do on a Sunday afternoon is to stay in the hotel and take advantage of the AI bar. On our return, we discovered that several people had done just that, and there was much merriment! So, all in all. No complaints from this little party of four, and I would certainly use this hotel again in the wintertime.
excellent would recommend to anyone
After reading negative reports set off on a short break wondering what on earth we were going to find ! We were very pleasantly surprised the hotel was lovely and clean , we were all inclusive and found no problems with any of the bar staff if you were friendly and polite to them they reciprocated .The food was very good ,lots of choice and if it wasnt quite hot enough thats what the microwave was for ! Spent an excellent long weekend there and would highly recommend this hotel.
Absolutely teribble
i have just recently come back from a 4 day break at the Amaika Hotel in Calella. First impressions was WOW the decor was absolutely lovely , the room was spacious and clean but unfortunately it was all down hill from there. The food was the worst I've ever experienced not only was it cold and unappetizing some of it was actually off. On complaining to the staff there reaction was very offhand. I even witnessed a young girl watering the plants that were sat on the shelves above the buffet the only problem was that the water continued to drip down on to the freshly served lettuce and when the young girl noticed this and happened to catch my eye she just shrugged and laughed. The entertainment was also awful not even worth anymore of a mention. All in all a horrendouse experience and definately a hotel that I would not advise anyone to go to.
Much ado about nothing!
Party of 2 adults and 2 children, aged 12 and 9. We have recently spent 9 nights at the Amaika Hotel. Before we left for our holiday, we had read all the reviews on this site and were then unsure what to expect on arrival. Would like to contradict some reviewers by saying that we had a great time there! Hotel decor was excellent, the Titanic theme does work and everywhere was clean and well-maintained! Our children loved the outside lifts and the glass/painted walls. We had a shower cubicle and a bath in our room, so no issue over bath mats but you do need to be careful if this is the case. My mother broke her arm in Salou the same way. We all thought the food was excellent! We are good eaters and like all types of food. There was always a selection of potatoes, meat, fish, salad, vegetables, pasta! What else could you ask for? The food was well cooked, well presented and was often in a traditional Spanish style, which some previous reviewers did not appreciate obviously. We on the other hand thought it was interesting, tasty and worth trying. You are, after all, in Spain not England! Oh, and warm enough too! We had travelled to Calella independently after staying in a Barcelona apartment for 5 days. The hotel had been booked in the UK over the WWW and we checked in without a hitch. We were not AI and therefore had little dealings with bar staff, who have had a good slating on this site! We were free to get out and about every night - there are lots of places to go for a coffee, cocktail, game of pool, table football, ten-pin bowling etc. The BIG downside was the size of the pool area. There aren't many beds and we opted for the beach instead most days, which was huge, clean and comfortable all round. Buying a parasol was a good idea and some blow up lilos, so we didn't rent sunbeds. (But, beware of jelly fish - our 9 year old got a nasty sting but the Red Cross tent soon sorted her out. She was back in the sea the next day.) Would have tried the poolsides of the other TOP hotels in the area in retrospect, these I hear are much bigger and close by! Same faces on the same beds, or same towels, should I say, when lunch time arrived and beds were left ownerless for hours at a time! This is really greedy and inconsiderate - all hotel guests have a right to lie at the poolside should they wish. I would love staff at hotels to be able to remove towels guarding beds and put these in a pile in the corner! But this never happens, does it? Overall, a great holiday. We returned refreshed and rested.
carnt wait to go back
just come back from amaika i went with my husband and 3 children ages 16 9 10 we loved it there and found all the staff and guests very friendly apart from the snack bar lady. the kids club girl chonchy worked very hard and kept all the kids and adults entertained inbetween being thrown in the pool every day with her clothes on she allways had us smileing shes an asset to the hotel. the food was set out nice most cold but not bad allways somthing you could eat but snack bar was very poor same things every day hamburgers salty hot dog sausages cold chip and bacon no puddings and not many children liked it. the pool is small and we never maneged to get a bed all the time we were there but beach is only round the corner. the amiaka is not perfect but not but we loved it there were more good than bad things and i would go back be friendly with the staff and they are fine with you look out for vladi the waiter hes great fun and a write joker. all the staff work very hard and long hours the hotel is spotless and rooms cleaned every day we loved it.
Lovely holiday
I booked this holiday through Teletext and it was very inexpensive considering it is a 4 star all inclusive (£410 each inc. flights & transfers). I didn't have particularly high expectations already because of this but didn't mind as my boyfriend and I just wanted to get away. However, when I read some of these reviews I was pretty worried - NO reason to have been though. Cleanliness: Really clean everywhere, rooms cleaned amazingly every day. Food: My boyfriend and I thought it was lovely. A huge selection every day and it was different every day. We don't go on holiday to eat burger and chips therefore enjoy eating foods we wouldn't normally eat over here. There was always a selection of meats in various sauces, rices, pastas, potatoes and salads. For people who don't like to try these foods or for the children there were chips and what looked like chicken nuggets. I couldn't believe I saw people (childeren AND adults) with piles of chips on their plates when the food was really lovely. It wasn't cold either - that seems to have been a point mentioned over & over. Swimming Pool: It was way too small for the hotel but the Osiris and Olymip are a minutes walk around the corner and have pleanty of pool space. You can go there and use the all inclusive facilities just the same. NOT a major hassle I don't think. Area: Not as touristy as places like Lorett at all. There were actually more Spanish holiday makers than British which is a big compliment I feel! Beach: Huge, clean and always somewhere spacious to sit. Sun loungers are pleantiful and available for not much for the whole day, even if you leave them for a bit. I highly recomend taking the train to Barcelona and going on an open-top bus - really really good day out visiting Olympic Stadium, Football Ground, Palace & Gaudi Architecture. Also the Water Park was great and you simply can't miss the Medieval night, it was soo much fun and not something you'd ever do in England. All in all we had a lovely holiday and a holiday is what you make it. If you want to stay in your hotel all day then you're going to find something to complain about. We heard some winging going on and it was a bit ridiculous. When the bar was really full and the queue was ever so long, a few couples moaned about it. We then walked around the corner to the Osiris and got served and a seat straight away - not a big deal. I hope this helps to give you a realistic view on the hotel.
Good and bad...
I went as a party of 7 consisting of 4 adults and 3 children. The first thing I have to mention is the size of the pool. The hotel must hold around 400 people yet there is only around 40 deck chairs and the pool is very small. Also the opening time for the pool was 9 Am which meant that if u got there at 9:30 there would be no seats left. I was QUEING at the door to get a chair at 8 Am just to make sure i got a chair. There was an incident when i was there which came from carelessness from a maintenance worker. He allowed to much chlorine into the pool and some children were taken to hospital with burns and some other people had to have check ups. Even the bomb squad was there. The food was great but there was not a lot to choose from and there was plenty of time to get something to eat. The bar staff were miserable and grumpy. I went AI and I got a AI card and when i went to hand it to the barman he would literally snatch it out my hand. There was 1 or 2 bar staff who wern't bad and occasionaly had a joke about. The entertainment wasnt great, but it was reasonable. There was an odd magic show and dances on and the reps were great. They were cheerful and happy. And one of them even cried when people left for home. The hotel rooms were good. You get supplied with just about everything you need and the beds were quite comfortable. Rooms were cleaned every day by maids and all was well as far as the hotel rooms was concerned. The hotel would have been extremely broing had I not met some friends to do stuff with. The hotel was also build to mimic the Titanic, there was pictures in the walls of the Titanic and it had ship-like lights on the wall. It looked quite attractive.
Holiday from hell
We have just returned from what was the worst holiday we have ever had in our lives. We left our son at home with family to have a break away on our own to rest and it was nothing more than a nightmare. On arrival at the airport our transfers were not there to meet us, and after some lengthy expensive phone calls we got picked up two hours later. On arrival at the Amaika it seemed quite a nice tidy hotel but not in a very good location, seemed to crammed in to a small space with loads of other hotels. There is only one small pool which you have no chance of getting near unless you are up at sunlight. Unlike its sister hotels in the area which were only three star but had more than two pools and one with pools on the roof. The reception and bar staff were arrogant and ignorant, when telling reception about any problems they seemed to just shrug it off and try to get rid of you. The rooms were okay and clean but the bathrooms were dangerous, there was no mats for the bath. On the first morning after having a shower i slipped in the bath and broke my ribs, thus ruining the rest of my holiday as i was constantly in pain. The food was awful, always a poor selection and cold. The meat seemed to be old cut offs left after the joints were taking from them, you had 90 per cent bone and had to scrape the other 10 per cent of meat off. My partner had been eating a chicken breast and cut in to the middle and found blood, obviously it was undercooked. Later on this gave her really bad food poisoning and kept her up all night. In the second week we heard a lot of commotion, and looked over the balcony to see six police cars, one police bike, two fire engines and three ambulances turn up at the hotel. The police came in and cordoned off the pool with tape, and the ambulance staff were treating people, and the fire brigade were by the pool with breathing apparatus on. We found out later on from other guests that there was a possible chlorine leak, but the hotel had made no statement to guests to explain what had happened or reasssure people.
Top quality Amaika
As a party of 4 adults and 2 children we have just returned from a 10 night stay at the Amaika Hotel. The hotel is listed as 4 star and the first impressions as you walk through the front glass doors into reception is how clean and plush everything looks. We arrived at midnight and the check in was very good. The rooms are spacious and well equipped with large bathrooms. The staff are polite and friendly (especially the barmen who made a real fuss of the children). The food was generally very good with plenty of choice, however some nights were better than others. Daytime entertainment for children had not really started but David (the hotel entertainer) tried to spend some time each day with them. Nightly entertainment was varied and usually pretty good but there are other things to do in Calella if you wish. The hotel itself is well situated in the centre of Calella only a 2 min walk from the beach and main shopping areas. The shops are varied with sports, clothes, food and gift shops as well as cafes, bars and restaurants. Overall a top hotel in an excellent location and we all hope to return again next year.
