Not the best apartments but.....
Classed as a Barcelo Comfort. Situated on the beach at Costa Teguise with the entrance through the back door of the apartments. Dont be fooled by the adverts for local bars on the beach front all they are is English Bulldog bars with names such as 'Rose & Crown' and 'The Bulldog' Avoid them at all costs. The complex is mid sized with all apartments on two floors in blocks of varying numbers. The best ones to ask for are the ones overlooking the pool NOT with a sea view as these are above the english bars. The rooms are adequate and fairly clean. Maid service is everyday except sunday and tuesday. All apartments are as advertised on the Barcelo website. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and are available through reception on a 24/7 basis. The pool area is fairly small and you have to get there before 8am to have any chance of a sunbed. Its not the germans though but the english/irish. Various activities throughout the day with a very energetic but not overbearing entertainment guy. The area surrounding the apartments is full of english type shops and bars. For first class meals try the 21st Century chinese directly opposite the complex on the main road. The food quality was better than some chinese in the UK and it was very reasonable and friendly. Highly recommended. Also highly recommended was the 'Dona Lola' which is at the bottom of the main street overlooking the man made beach. Always busy and booking is advisable. For gentle drinking and an excellent atmosphere go to the market square behind the hotel past Portofinos diner. In the centre is 'The Snug' an irish bar with seating outside. This is the best and most friendly place to drink. We were always made welcome and would recommend it to anyone including families. There are also several excellent eating establishments around the square with a nice tappas in the corner . For car hire use 'Plus Rent A Car' who have offices on the main street, they offered the most competative rates with a 7 seater 'truck'; costing 240 euros for five days all inclusive. Costa Teguise itself is very english/irish commercial dominated and is not as nice as Playa Blanca but it is worth staying just for the 'Snug', Dona Lolas and the Chinese alone. Must also mention the aquatis diving centre along the beach at the back of the complex. Very friendly, very efficient and well worth a day or so of your time if you have not been scuba diving before. I hadnt and felt very safe with them. Would stay at the apartments again but only if they were in Playa Blanca and not Costa Teguise - its to commercialised and not really what Lanzarote is about (except the market square area - would go back there time and again)
Run-Down and Dilapidated
Since a very enjoyable holiday some years ago at El Castillo in Fuerte we have stayed almost exclusively with the Barcelo chain, but no more. They have downgraded their apartment complexes to "Comfort", for which read dilapidated. The latest example is La Galea. It is a large apartment complex situated on the beach at Costa Teguiese. Centrally located in the complex are two and a half smallish pools which are by no means big enough to accomodate all the guests. The sun loungers are in short supply with a substantial number of them broken. The room (half board) was clean but very poorly equipped. There was no shelf in the bathroom so all toiletries had to go on the edge of the basin. The beds were hard and frustratingly covered with an ill fitting undersheet which constantly came adrift in the night. The weather was, as expected, very hot and windy so the lack of air conditioning or even a fan was disappointing. The exterior paintwork was peeling and the planters around the complex housing only weeds. I could continue but I feel the point is made. It's not worth spending the flight money to stay at such a sub-standard place.
6 Perfect Days Here Then A Cockroach Moved In On The Last Day
My wife and I have just returned from Barcelo la Galea after a weeks holiday to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We were recommended the apartments by some friends of ours who had stayed there last year and we extremely pleased that it turned out to be exactly as they'd decsribed. It's in a perfect location for those wanting to be within a couple of yards from the beach, plenty of choice for restaurants and for couples and those with younger children is pretty quiet and laid back. The apartments themselves were surprisingly roomy, almost villa like in proportions with generous sized rooms and a well equipped kitchen. The rooms were also kept spotlessly clean for the time we were there. The staff were always very friendly and heplful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. However, as for the resort itself it's certainly not particularly Spanish feeling and being a package holiday destination is pretty much dominated by Brits and a few Germans, so if you want a bit of culture and more genuine local feel is best to head inland or further north where there are plenty of pretty villages and towns and less commercialisation. Only a couple of reservations that I would offer and that is that when we were there it was almost constantly very windy and trips to the beach proved to be quite interesting, trying to hang on to your towels, hats, picnic etc! My only other problem was what happened to me on the last day when sitting in the lounge in the morning drinking a cup of tea I glanced down to the top of my leg to be confronted by the biggest cockroach I have ever seen which had either been in the apartment all the time we were there and hiding until the last day or had come in through the window. Suffice it to say if I had seen this monstrous insect on the first day it would have possibly been my main preoccupation during the entire holiday as I am absolutely terrified of the things. I hope it was a one off and I know they are a fact of life in that part of the world but be warned anyway.
Excellent location
This hotel is excellent. We could not find a fault at all. We had a room with a sea view, on the second floor. The hotel is very clean and tidy, beautifully arranged with lovely gardens, and three small pools with plenty of sunbeds, and it's own access to the beach. The room was very comfy, well equipped, with oven, hobs, fridge, tv, bath/shower, phone. Rooms cleaned every day except Sun. Very quiet location, although there are several bars just outside the hotel's own beach access. Loads of restaurants with a good choice of styles, we ate out every night and were spoilt for choice. Try Ryan's bar on corner of headland for happy hour (5 - 7.30 ) ! Weather good, lots of sun, but usually a nice breeze with it. We will definitely go again, our best holiday ever. Probably not best suited for teenagers/ clubbers etc, but ideal for families with young children, and older people looking for a relaxing holiday. A must see trip is the Timanfaya National Park. We went on an all day island tour, including volcanoes camel rides, wine tasting, caves, and it was fascinating. You will not better this hotel!
Lovely surprise!
My friend and i arrived at these apartments on 16 March for one week. When i booked the holiday i did not know which resort we would be staying in nor the accommodation. What a surprise, we could not believe our luck with this place. Our room was a studio for 3 people and the view fantastic facing over the sea. There were a few bars down below, but because of the time of year it was quiet, but i would imagine in the height of summer it may be a little noisy. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. This is an ideal place for couples, singles and families. There is entertainment for the children during the day. You can sunbathe by the pool,if you want a little privacy there are sun bathing areas where it is quiet. The weather was very good, some days a little cloudy, but very hot. This place was definitely value for money as a last minute booked holiday. I would recommend it to anyone! Trip Adviser from Bolton, Lancs.
Great Location
We stayed for a week at the Barcelo La Galea Apartments. This was our first stay in these apartments, though we had visited Costa Teguise before. We requested a sea view with a balcony and we were not disappointed. We'd read that it may be noisy at night from the nearby bars, but we had no problem. The apartment was larger than we expected, very comfortable and clean. The complex had a good swimming pool and bar/restaurant which served good quality snacks. We didn't try the main restaurant as we prefer to eat out on an evening. The staff were friendly and helpful. Keeping the room until the evening of departure, as we had a late flight home, was no problem, though there was a small charge. A good evening's entertainment is to be had at the nearby "Lighthouse" bar. The live music was very good. There are plenty of bars showing live sport on TV too. A day trip by bus to the island capital, Arrecife, is to be recommended. We were surprised at the attractiveness of the seafront area. There are also many designer shops in the town centre. We liked Arrecife so much, we went twice. Puerto del Carmen, the main resort, though, we thought over-commercialised and, apart from the harbour area, a bit tatty. Certainly not as pleasant as it had been a few years ago. Apart from one day of showers, the weather was sunny and warm (high 70s during the day and warm enough for shirt-sleeves in the evening). All in all, an enjoyable holiday and a very good hotel.
What a great holiday
Just arrived back after a 1 week stay at the Barcelo, what a great time we had. Lovely well kept gardens and pool area, apartments really nice and large, take my advice do not have a sea view this time of year, very windy on the balcony and no sun so the apartment was very cold, opt for a south facing balcony, take plenty of warm clothes for the evening. Had some good nights out in the Bulldog just opposite the apartments, also some good food in the Cutty Sark. All in all a very good week although the weather could have been better.
Very Enjoyable
We had a very enjoyable 2 week break over the christmas period. Food was excellent. Staff very friendly which added to our overall enjoyment. Appartments need to be renovated, but always very clean. Towels on sunbeds from early morning (no people until late in the day, if at all!!) was the only problem - can't see the reason for this as there are always plenty of sunbeds available.
Some good features, some not............................
Stayed here for a week in December. Good points: Public areas very clean. Food excellent. Staff friendly. Great position in resort. Nice pool area and snack bar. Not so good points to bear in mind: If 3 in a studio room, the third bed is a 'rollaway type', which was too short for my 11 year old who is quite tall. Her feet hung over the end. We payed a supplement and moved to an apartment which gave us a lot more space. (Also our original studio room was situated over the disco and seafront bars. I had asked for a quiet room as i am a light sleeper) The apartments have some nice features, mirrored wardrobes, nice kitchenette. The bath was stained brown. This was because the bath water was permanently running brown which i was told was normal by the rep and at reception. (I have stayed in many hotels in Lanzarote over the last 20 years and have never encountered this before. I must have been lucky) We had a constant problem with ants in the apartment. On reporting the problem the maid was sent and handed us a can of ant killer! I was not impressed. I killed many ants and some of them remained on the floor of the apartment right through our holiday.(The ants were even in the kitchenette) The room was never cleaned properly which was a shame as all the public areas were spotless. There was an apartment block opposite which was being renovated and the 'bin men' came with their lorry at 3.15 am every morning to pick up about 5/6 skips of rubbish which were each tipped into the back of the bin lorry.(This would not affect heavy sleepers but awoke me every morning) On questioning whether the bins were emptied EVERY morning the rep and reception told me only once a week. It was actually 5 nights out of 7. In retrospect we should have asked to be moved again but we just couldn't be bothered to pack up again!
Good choice
Nice place more like a hotel with very friendly staff and entertaiments. Ideal location with front door onto the main street and back door onto the beach with more bars & restaurants. Good choice of food places and plenty of bars.
