I stayed at the Comfort Inn in mid September as I was in the city for a business meeting, which would finish too late for me to travel home that same day. I booked one nights accommodation based on the hotel’s location and the price of £60 for the night. I did not read any reviews before I made my reservation.
Upon arrival, the outside of the hotel looked smart and well kept. However, this seems to be the only part of the entire property that was kept in such good condition. The reception area ‘look’ is what can best be described as 1980’s Russia. Although it was clean, it looked dated. I was greeted by the receptionist through the hue of cigarette smoke – but not before he had put his cigarette out and put the phone down. In his credit he was polite, if a little abrupt and he allowed me to check in even though my room would not be ready until 2pm that afternoon.
I went up to my room on the 2nd floor and I made my way down the narrow corridor. I noticed it had steps at irregular intervals, so may not be suitable for wheelchair users or those with walking difficulties. Again this area was clean but looked very dated and with the carpet threadbare in some areas.
The room. The first thing I noticed when I entered my room was the size. For a central London hotel it was big. It contained no more than five single beds, with plenty of room to move around. I must mention though that two of them seemed to be about one foot shorter and slightly narrower than the others, these may suit children. Another ‘plus’ point was the tea and coffee making facilities that were available in the room. Sadly a closer inspection of the rest of the room revealed a few not so ‘plus’ points. The carpet was filthy, although obviously it had been vacuumed, it badly needed to be shampooed or cleaned. It was covered in stains of various sizes and colours, even for the good of other Holiday Watchdog users I decided against sniffing them. There were three ‘wardrobes’ in one corner. I guessed at some point they had been fitted to a wall somewhere but were now free standing, leaning against each other. There was also a small battered 14” TV that had the usual five channels. The last thing I want to mention about the room, before I move onto the bathroom is something I didn’t notice until I was leaving the next day. Above the bed I choose to sleep in was an ‘access hatch’ like you would have for your attic. However, the framework that held it in the ceiling was hanging out about 6”! I could see into the dark space above. The wood looked rotten.
The bathroom. I had high hopes for the bathroom. I have stayed in a variety of accommodation in my time and usually the bathroom was the one room that normally got a good clean no matter what rating the hotel or apartments. This bathroom was tiled from floor to ceiling in white tiles, time had not been kind to them though, and they were now yellow. There was a shower, toilet and sink. The sink was cleanish with a selection of toiletries placed on the glass shelf above the sink. The shower was a different story. The actual basin had a huge crack in it so the water ran through this hole rather than the plughole – wouldn’t want to be in the room below. The tiles where covered in mould. And the worst yet was the Human hair that covered the showerhead and tap, yuck! The shower curtain could also have done with replacing – about 10 years ago. The last thing that lost the bathroom ‘points’ were the holes on both sides of the door. Someone had obviously punched or kicked them at some point, so they had been filled in with filler and painted over with brown paint – nice.
I decided not to take up my continental breakfast that was part of the price that I paid, therefore I am unable to comment on this or the area in which it is served.
In conclusion, this hotel is very well located. Less than one minute walk from Notting Hill Gate tube station and the same from Notting Hill high street. If you are looking for a cheap nights accommodation then it will do the job. However, if you are planning something a bit more special or a longer stay then I would suggest you try elsewhere.
