'A Taste Sensation'
What can I say???? The apartments are pretty average, and could do with modernising (especially the kitchen, very basic - bought a pizza and had nothing to cook it on!) The cockroaches were big, but the staff did all they could to help by providing a killer spray. The pool was lovely, with lots of sunbeds, but get out early with a towel if you want an umbrella! Tino, Leo and Manolo were run ragged at the bar. The bar snacks served were reasonable. Barbecue nights were excellent value. What made our holiday was the resident entertainer, Paul Santangelo. He was 'disgustingly' brilliant! Entertainment was 4 nights a week - you have to try the knockback quiz. The questions are the same every night - but it's a good laugh! They have a brilliant juggling act, Jules the singer is good and give the reptile show a miss! Mustn't miss ELVIS - the highlight of our week! The main downside to our holiday was the 92 steps we had to go down (not to mention climb up) to our apartment. If booking a holiday request a room on 'A' level.
LOVED IT !!
Just arrived home after a week at Guanabarra Park. Perfect place for a family holiday, all the staff are very helpful and the meals at the pool bar are YUMMY. Ideal for the 'in-between' teenagers who are not quite ready for the booze cruise senario! Paul is a lot of fun, fab Elvis Paul! Jules is magic (bought the CD) The juggling brothers(can't remember how to spell the name) are fantastic also. The weather was boiling point but there are plenty of shaded areas to cool off, the pool is clean as a whistle and still warm if you happen to get chucked in at 3am, Laura says thanks Phil(from Ireland) she thought it was fun, even if she still had her new dress on !! The apartments are bright and clean and the only cockroach we spotted was running along the roadside at the bottom of the hill. We would go back in a flash, wish we had booked for two weeks!! CHEERS!! Lainy, Jim, Laura, Jenni and Mhairi Wilson from Ayrshire in Scotland.
Excellent Holiday
Just back from these , value for money apartments.Great location if you are fit and able, you will be a lot fitter and able after a week of walking down to the beach (15 mins) , if you are fit its easy to walk back up the hill, if not 3 euro for a taxi. The view from each apartment is superb , right over the harbour . Rooms are well equipped , you can rent the tv 12 euros a week, cleaned impeccably every day and the whole centre is maintained to a high standard every morning. Bar and restaurant very good. Resident entertainer Paul Santangelo was a true professional keeping everyone happy with his quizzes, shows and Elvis tribute. As a value for money, great views, and great family holiday centre with superb entertainment, cant be beaten at this price. Oh yes and the weather is also wonderful. Read a couple of other reviews before I went , which mentioned shock horror "cockroaches " -get over it -its an island off the coast of Africa ,off course you will see them in hot weather! Its Not Antartica!
Real Review
I have never writter a review before but I've been using this site recently looking for a wedding destination. When we went to Guanabara Park in 2003 we arrived in the middle of the night and were greeted by a huge cockroach sitting on our kitchen side. We tried to catch it but missed, we hoped it was a one off and went to bed. My partner awoke in the night to find 2 cockroaches walking up the bedroom walls. We were both horrified and spent the next two weeks sleeping with the lights on. We informed the hotel who knew about the problem and supplied us with cockroach spray. The entertainment was really poor with some idiot bar men who kept saying "looky looky but no touchy touchy" to any teenage girl. The hotel was miles away from anything. Overall very poor, do not visit this hotel.
chill out at the guanabara
just back from a 9 day holiday here and had a fabulous time. I was a bit miffed at how far out the apartments were until i opened the balcony doors and saw the breathtaking views. our apartment was cleaned daily and staff were very helpful. the 2nd week (sat, sun, mon) was very quiet so no entertainment was put on. We got the sun on our balcony from 10am to 8pm!! so we often didn't leave the apartments. there is a small shopping centre approx 15 min stroll down the hill (but a half hour slog going up). the small centre had 2 pubs and about 7 or 8 restaurants including a chinese to die for that did take aways. Rocky's bar had karaoke 3 times a week and Sam got everyone involved. to get to the main commercial centre took approx half an hour to walk but it was a nice walk passed the harbour and side of the beach. i would recommend these apartments but the hill is quite steep so might not suit the elderly although taxi's are in abundance. i have never chilled out so much.
Best time of my life
Myself and 8 other girls booked this holiday last year and i really had the time of my life! We thought that it might be a bit quiet for us but we were able to get into the centre very easily because the taxis are massivly frequent (even better) were very cheap. The actual hotel is really nice although the steps are quite annoying having to walk/stumble down every night. The bar staff and reception staff are spot-on and game for a laugh and Russ the entertainer is the bomb! I have to admit i may be responsible for a few cockroaches un-timely deaths but they started it. I think this is best suited for couples mebs 20's 30's but as a 17 year old i seriously had a blast, anyone thinking of going, i really reccommend guanabara park.
Sunshine, Peace & Plenty of rest & relaxation(oh and beers!)
I booked up this week away at the very last minute - 10 days before departure -We were looking for some warm weather and a good deal of de-stressing! - despite my suitcase remaining at Gatwick and losing my watch in a restaurant loo, we all had a really good time! (Suitcase turned up a few days later, sadly the watch didn't). I had read some of the reviews on this site of the apartments (though only after booking the holiday) and was thus pretty optimistic that it would turn out to be o.k. Even so we were very pleasantly surprised to find an attractive place high up in the hills with views down to the marina, definately in the better smaller and quieter part of Puerto Rico. The setting with pool and bar area with table tennis and also a pool table (cost extra & tucked way behind the small eating area) was perfect! Although our apartments (we decided on two, one for ourselves and another for the two 14 yr old boys!) were a couple of terrraces down which meant a few steps up to the pool and bar area but we didn't mind - we had to have SOME exercise!! These were fairly clean and the furnishings bright, there was a kitchen area with fridge and hot plates, table and chairs, the sitting area had a sofa and chair, the sofa turned into two additional sleeping areas if needed, there is a twin bedded bedroom off this and a bathroom with power shower! A vanitory unit with basin & large mirror with lights was separate from the bathroom which was particularly useful I thought! Although there was some building work on the other hillside it only really got going the day we left! Which was a week after Easter. As for other nuisances a large hotel high up on the other side of the Guanabara Park had loud music and singing(?) in the evenings but this always stopped bang on the midnight hour! So it was bearable! As to the cleanliness of the apartments - beware of the possibility of cockroaches, urgh!! We were never troubled in OUR room, it was only the boys and I wondered if that was because of any food left lying around? Anyway once mentioned to reception we were given a spray to use and cleaners were brought in to give the place a good going over! No more trouble after that! We travelled to Puerto Rico on the Gran Canaria with a holiday company but found ourselves booking up to go on tours etc before we'd had a real chance to take a look around. Also we discovered that booked independantly these trips could be booked a whole lot cheaper - so don't get ripped off! One trip we went on was Sioux City, a lot of fun for the boys and some of us adults!! A short boat trip to Mogan on market day (Friday) was a nice diversion and apart from that we sunned ourselves (you will get burned!) and ate and drank to our satisfaction!
Highly recommended!! Guanabara Park!!!
Just got back from Guanabara after spending a week there. Found appartment to be lovely, very clean and comfortable, and there was a very nice bottle of red wine, sweets, washing-up kit, tissues etc in the appartment on our arrival. This was a really nice touch as you don't normally get these little extras in self catering accommodation without paying extra for them. Maids kept appartment very clean and regularly changed bathroom linen throughout the week. View from balcony stunning especially when the sun went down in the evenings. Pool area and bar/restaurant very clean and food and drink reasonably priced and good. Staff very helpful and friendly, and eager to resolve any little problems you might have. We would highly recommend anyone to stay at the Guanabara Appartments and we intend to visit again next year. Appartments are situated in the much quieter area above the marina in Puerto Rico, but if you prefer a livlier evening you can walk or take a taxi into the noisier/busier town centre. Taxi's are very cheap and plenty available. I would recommend the La Cascada Golf Restaurant situated at the local shopping area just down from Guanabara Park. Food is excellent! Staff very polite, friendly and nothing is a problem to them. Prices are very reasonable too compared with restaurants in the town centre area. We also found that you don't get such high standards of service in the town centre restaurants either...much better to stay local if you ask me. Happy holidays to all!!!
unbelievable holiday
we turned up at 3 am staff were there all very welcoming. the pool was lit up by the night sky and moon looked lovely entertainment was ok, Tino {the best bar man in gran canaria} was extremaly funny but the best thing about the hotel was the food it was second to none. [try the ommelatte with cheese and chips. wow] it was only 3 euros in a taxi to the nearest centre which is really cheap....... guanabara park is the best hotel in gran canaria bar none i think anyone planning on going there should do its brilliant...... ps just as we were arriving liz from atomic kitten was leaving so annoyed we missed her the rooms were kept clean and tidy mades were very polite when we went there was a heat wave it was 42 degrees at 6.30 in the evening ......im hoping to go back in august 2005 hope to see you all there.x.x.x.x..xx..x.x.x.x
FANTASMIGORICAL
We love this place so much in fact we are returning there for the fourth year running in July this year (2004), Accomadation (as we agree with others) to be adequate for our needs, The entire Guanabara staff (apart from Mr Happy on night reception and his stick wielding mate, HA ! HA! HA!) from top man right through to the cleaning staff, Bar staff TINO, Lolly everyone of them fantastic people, Oh and before I forget all our best wishes to Issabella, I hope she had a full recovery from her car accident last year, so to all the gang at the Guanabara (if you get to read this) we,ll see you all July 24th 2004.
