Where do i start?
Last year me and a group of 8 girls went to Ibiza, had an absolutely fantastic time and decided for round 2 in Malia.
Oh what a stupid mistake that was!
First off, Don't choose Malia as your holiday destination full stop. It IS as bad as they have been saying on the news.
Let's start with the hotel, generally the rooms were nice and spacious, and the first couple of days we had new towels and bedsheets each morning. This soon changed, and to our dismay, we had a visitor! A little mouse was living in our room. When we confronted the staff about this, they laughed in our faces and simply sprayed the room with bug spray! It was disgusting the little thing left droplets everywhere and just generally made the place uncleanly.
The pool is really nice, i have nothing bad to say about that because the pool area is lovely, food we bought from the bar is generally good, they had computers etc.
The staff were quite rude, the guy who works behind the bar had a bad attitude problem and would constantly, and quite frankly, purposely short change us.
Frixos is far enough away from the strip so that you can get some sleep which is good, but it also means the only way you can get to the strip is by walking down a long, pitch black, secluded path. DO NOT WALK IT ON YOUR OWN. There were four of our girls walking back and both times there were boys of about 12 or 13 trying to take our things and touch us, shouting things at us and just generally intimidating us. It was quite scary.
Malia as a place is awful, and i won't like it is not due to the locals. We wanted to go and have a nice girly holiday, get some clubbing in and have drinks. All the drinks are cheap and nasty, the reps are very rude and sometimes way too pushy, they'll grab you and pull you into the bars. There are constant quad bikes going up and down the strip you must be careful as they dont stop for anyone, and dont buy them either they are most likely a scam! I would describe the Malia nightlife as chaotic, NASTY atmosphere, unclassy, skanky, dangerous. this is not a relaxing holiday, nor a fun, exciting clubbing week. It is full with rowdy british tourists all trying to get laid,
so generally if you ask my advice, go to ibiza!!!

Simply put, the single worst holiday...

Simply put, the single worst holiday i have ever had.
First the resort:
Malia is full of samey clubs playing the same music all the time and british bars showing football, football, football. Now some people may like this, but surely the idea of a holiday is to "get away from it all" Anyway, the PRs outside the clubs (especially ZigZag) are pushy and rude beyond compare, always walking right in front of you in your face all the time - one of the guys literally tried pushing us into his club and wouldnt take no for an answer.
Unless you go to the Old Town (i recommend Stablos & Elisabeth) then all of the resteraunts in Malia are overpriced and do really crap food - and dont even get me started on the service - dont go to sirtaki on the strip, customer service is literally non existent.
We arrived in Malia towards the end of the season for 2 weeks so our fellow holiday makers gradually aged as the fortnight drew on, which was good because there were a mix of people to chat with.
Hotal Frixos:
The staff in frixos are on the whole ok - Stellios is a legend, but Sam the infamous distgusting perv of a barman should really be sacked, i know of at least two or three complaints made to the reps just during my stay there, and the reps just laughed it off saying "That's Sam", well a friend of mine couldnt get her change off him unless she agreed to go on a date with him - (this may sound like he was joking, but he was quite forceful and wouldnt actually take no for an answer).
The food at the hotel (like anywhere else in malia) was rubbish and overpriced, with no breakfast options except a full english or a continental breakfast (in this case a hard boiled egg and a peice of toast for about 4 euros).
The music they played round the pool catered for one person and one person alone - Sam himself. He would skip any songs he didnt like and at one time played the same RnB track ("when you're out in the club, dont think im not," etc) literally 8 TIMES IN ONE HOUR!!!! Occasionally he would mix it up by playing Bon Jovi's greatest hits on a loop for what seemed like a further 3 weeks straight.
The reps.... well what can i say, Keenan and Daryl quite frankly are a complete disgrace to First Choice (unless of course they train all their staff in the art of Only-Caring-You're-Attractive) They spent more time chatting up the girls, trying to push the overpriced bar crawls and oogling the topless sunbathers than actually doing their job - Myself and a friend booked the Samaria Gorge Trip which ended up being cancelled. The only reason we know it was cancelled is because we were friendly with one of the other reps who told us, Our reps didnt even attempt to contact us, push a note under the door, leave a message with reception or anything, and when we approached keenan about it he couldnt possibly seem less interested that we wasted a day of our holiday.
The rooms in the hotel were basic beyond belief, however we did have the added bonus of mould and damp in the bathroom that made the entire apartment stink and made us all ill, so its not all bad. The hot water was intermittent at best, and in fact at one point the water was off completely for about half an hour or so.
So to summarise, Malia is a dirty horrible town with no culture or decency whatsoever. We have all actually now intergrated the term "Frixos" into our everday vocabulary to mean "disappointed" or "really crap". thats how bad hotel frixos is. Thats how bad Malia is. DO NOT GO THERE. I SINCERELY ADVISE YOU, SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.

frixos hotel/apartments were great, everything you expect from an apartment in greece, simple, clean and basic. we had one of the best balcony's, the pool was lovely and the staff were friendly. gym and and sauna on site also however its so hot though - you dont really need it!!
very close to the main strip - so not far to go to get some food or go out for the nite.
music played daily by the pool - which eventually catered for all tastes.
only downside is - the breakfast was not very good, not alot of choice and was cold the day we made it for breakfast.

Sep 2008, Miss J Murray

before going to malia all i read was really bad reviews on the frixos hotel but luckily it wasnt as bad as people had said. the main complaint was it wasnt the cleanest of places when it came to the rooms but the rest of the hotel was okay e.g this boy was sick round the pool and people were out straight away cleaning it up but i was there for 2 weeks and in that 2 weeks the bedding wasnt changed once and towels changed about 3 times. the bathroom flooded when you put the shower on and one night we found a cockroach. i must admit though we had a problem with our fridge and light and the staff was up straight away sorting it out. the man behind the bar in the day is an absolute disgrace and made sure he never found out my room number, he constantly made derogatery comments about women and constantly shouted stupid things on the microphone. the start of the holiday the pool was great but was instantly put off by a rather large greek boy who lives in the hotel who gets in and trys to harrass the girls and spitting in the pool again would not let him near our room. i dont recommend two girls going on their own especially with boyfriends as all the men are after one thing and make that perfectly clear. the best part about malia was probably the food in the red lion. i dont recommend the place but everyone has different tastes dont they. frixos was definately not the worst hotel in malia but its nt completly recommended.

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!I would not go back...

Sep 2008, Miss LV Rodgers

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!I would not go back to this hotel for all the money in the world!! The hotel was absolutely disgusting, especially the bathroom. We stayed Bed and Breakfast, and for the entire week we stayed our linen and towels were not changed at all. When we came the towels were stained already and there was a dirty pair of mens underwear in the wardrobe. Upon leaving the hotel I had forgotten something and went back upstairs to our room, and I found the cleaner folding our dirty towels we had all week and setting them on the bed for the next people staying. When we informed our rep that the room was dirty he laughed and said he would buy us a pair of marygold gloves to clean it ourselves. He was so unapproachable and I will never travel with First Choice again if he is anything to go by. The breakfast consisted of toast, so not even worth getting up for. The barman was sleezy and took pictures of girls in their bikinis without asking and licked my friends finger when she went to collect her change. Malia as a whole was not bad and the weather was gorgeous. I am 20 and my two friends are 22 and 24, and we were about the oldest people in Malia. The resort seemed to be full of kids just finished school and underage. The average age in Malia was approximately 15! There is plenty of bars and offers on, but the alcohol is all watered down so no amount of vodka would get you remotely tipsy. The music in all the clubs is exactly the same every single night in all the pubs. So unless you are a Drum and bass or RnB fan this is not for you. Finally, DO NOT go with the reps. By flying you in over night you have no option to price around for excursions. They will sell it to you by saying it's an all inclusive bar..... but all you get is sex on the beach cocktails (with no alcohol in them) for 1 hour only. I would not wish this hotel on anyone so save yourself £400 and stay in a hostel is you want somewhere on comparison to the Frixos.

Omg, Malia is actually amazing...

Aug 2008, Miss S Marsden

Omg, Malia is actually amazing
Definately a place to go if you're in the age group of 18-30's
6 of us girlies went and we had 3 rooms with 2 in each
Even though our rooms weren't together it didn't bother us too much
The hotel all in all is quite basic
Rooms are nice, but quite small
Air conditioning comes at an extra price
Think it was like 45 euros for one week
Sooo quite expensive
We didn't get it, we just stuck it out
We went on bed and breakfast basis, which we had on the first morning we got there and it was disgusting
There was toast, cold boiled eggs, cold beans and little mini sausages
So much for a continental breakfast
There was also cereal and drinks
Can easily say that we didnt eat it again when we were there, especially as we saw a rat run into there at one point
The pool bar does some nice food at good prices
The bar guy in the daytime isn't very nice, quite pervy and has a go at you if you take your own bottle of water down with you when you're sunbathing
Georgio, the guy on the bar at night was an absolute legend
Gives you free drinks all the time, mostly shots that tasted just like fruit juice
Theres two old women that always sit in the reception area, either asleep or talking to themselves
Quite sweet actually lol
Stallios the security guard is a softie really
Sat speaking to him for one night for about 2 hours, i was drunk so he probably thought i was just some stupid english bimbo ha
Charged me 15euros to bring a lad back to my hotel room
The location of the hotel is wicked
Literally a one minute walk and you're at the top of the strip
Don't go near the quad sales people on your way to the strip from the hotel as they scam you
If you want a quad get them from somewhere along the strip
All in all an absolutely amazing holiday
Would definately go back

Oct 2007, Miss Cm Marshallmccreadyclarkfidge

Well where do I start! Malia 2007 was the first holiday us girls had been on and it was AMAZING! The whole experience was great and we would definitely go back again and stay in Frixos Apartments. We only really used our apartments to sleep in during the day, as we didn't get in till 8 in the morning most nights and were shattered during the day. I would definitely not recommend staying in bed and breakfast as you will not be up in time to eat and its nice to eat out at night before you hit the strip.
Generally the strip doesn't start livening up till about 1 and from then on its crazy. The strip has a huge variety of bars and the deals for drinks are good however the PRs will drive you mad when they try and pull you into the bars. One of us was picked up by a PR off the strip and he ran off with her into the bar so we all had to come in, that sums up Malia really its 24/7 craziness. The clubs are sooo good, I'd recommend Bananas (free drinks girls), Zig Zag, MALIBU and many many more.
Frixos was great, the security guard was a legend and let us bring people back all the time without having to pay, just don't be too noisy running around having waterfights in your apartments at 7 in the morning or they will call the police, as we soon found out! Be careful not to flood the apartments either, we managed too as one of us blocked the sink with her sick and left the tap on, obviously none of us noticed as we were too drunk. We all woke up surrounded in water so spent the rest of the day mopping up our apartment and hanging out all the wet clothes, thank god we were on the bottom floor.
Frixos is in a great location as it is about a 5-10min walk to the strip and away from the noise so you can get to sleep if you wanted to which isn't that likely. We had no problems with the accomodation and First Choice Twentys were wikid. The pool area and pool bar is nice with a great atmosphere, you will find the bar man George loves his Britney Spears and plays it constantly, well he did while we were there.
Overall an amazing memorable holiday never to be forgotten. I would definitely recommend anyone to stay in Frixos Apartments (no families, its all young people around 17-25), cant wait till next year 2008!

Just got back to rainy Wales...

Oct 2007, 9822nikki

Just got back to rainy Wales yesterday. (Very sad). We have just spent the week in the Frixos Hotel in Malia, Crete. We had an absolutely fab time, the weather was great, and everyone’s so friendly. I would def recommend going here as the night life is absolutely amazing and it’s so cheap.
The hotel was very basic, the beds were very uncomfortable, and you just couldn't sort the shower temp properly so we had a cold shower nearly every night. If you are looking for a quiet hotel this is probably not for you as they play thumping music till early hours (from the hotel bar not the clubs). I wouldn't recommend you stay B & B as all you get is cereal and toast (not much option).
The Malia mile is about 5-10 min walk which isn't too bad and you can't hear the noise from the hotel. I would say it's a good half an hour walk to Malia beech, which made it easier to stay by the pool.
Everything is very cheap and nearly every bar/restaurant gives you free drinks or shots. Gerogio behind the bar in the evenings is a brill laugh and starts your night out with free drinks (if your nice).
Overall it is a lovely place to stay for younger people, if you want something cheap and basic this is for you.
In the evenings the average temp was about 28c (that was about 10.30pm)!!! September is a nice time to go as things are slightly quieter but everything’s still a bit lively.

Sep 2007, G Latics

Stayed at Frixos during July and had the time of our lives. Hotel was basic at best, we found cockroaches on our last day and even a rat but overall it was a good laugh. The people were great. Sam behind the bar during the day was a laugh as was Rachel.
Pool was great. Pool bar was very over priced though and you weren’t allowed to bring your own food or drink by the pool.
Darryl the rep was awesome and a great laugh. Went on the booze cruise, school disco and 50 cent night which were all awesome.
Hotel is situated at a great location if you want to be close to the strip as its right at the top and a 2 minute walk to your first bar! It’s quite far from the beach though, about a half hour walk.

Three of us flew out to Malia on...

Aug 2007, Miss H K

Three of us flew out to Malia on August 14th and stayed at the Frixos hotel. We were a bit put off when we first arrived because the room was tiny, and the bathroom was equally as small but we learned to live with it as you hardly spend any time in your rooms!
The hotel is in a great location, just at the start of the strip so it is easy to stagger home but far enough so you can’t hear the music when your trying to sleep!
I would defiantly recommend the Frixos, but if you go do not stay B&B! The apartments are much much better, they are bigger and you get a better bathroom and kitchenette.
The staff at the hotel are quality, but if your planning on a few late evenings in your room make sure you get on the right side of the security guards! They are very strict and will literally pick people up and carry them out of your room if you are too loud!!
All in all I loved Malia, make sure you go to Help Bar (its quality to start off your night in) - I’m back in Malia next year and will be returning to the Frixos!!!
