My wife and I found Maharbra Palace a very friendly and welcoming hotel. The staff were allways very helpfull and curtious. The hotel itself was very clean. Our room was on the 4th floor again it was kept very clean by our maid, however the bathroom was clean but a bit tiered. We faced the pool/sea hence no sun in our room all day.
The food was basic but good with plenty of choice. The hotel is in a fantastic situation being only a 10 minuite walk from the marina and shops and only 15mins by taxi from Sousse
costing about 6/7 Dinar about £2-50. The hotel and surrounding area is ideal for any one with a walking disability.
We had enjoyable fortnight but I would warn everyone that when changing monies at the hotel to watch your change DONT leave the desk until you have checked the monies against your receipt.
We tipped our maid and waiter at the end of each week and gave a small tip for other services i.e. barman, doorman etc.
Enjoy your holiday.

My Stay, during Xmas 2007 + New Year 2007, at Marhaba Palace, Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia, was GREAT.
Being an wheelchair user, I was very cautious about the accessibility of the hotel.
Even though the ramps, in Tunisia, are STEEP and are usually Marble, within the hotels, marble is slippery, especially when damp. On my stay, I met a few “mobility impaired” people, who found the hotel good, for the area
The staff are very helpful, if you tip them, they will do all they can.
There are four lifts, at opposite ends of the huge (flat) reception, which has a magnificent centre candelabra. Short pile carpet, on all other floors, does not hinder wheelability.
Rooms are big, (sea views, to the rear, town views else where) bathroom with over shower-bath, basin, Hairdrier, Towels clean every day. Separate toilet (which is on the small side). Hotel is a VERY LARGE H shape, with the beach side in the shade, after mid-day.
Maid service every day, very thorough, even art sculptures with the bed linen and bed clothes and net curtains. Laundry service available.
Restaurant has 3 levels (accessed by steps or ramps) Food is “Buffet” style, plenty of choice, and plenty of it. (you always have the same table, every night).
Breakfast is in a different room, again buffet style, plenty of choice. Waiters direct you to your table, some tables are wider than others (good for a wheelchair).
The hotel has a shop, hair salon, Al a Carte resturaunt, Fitness centre, tennis courts, mini golf, sauna and massage suite, indoor (heated) outdoor swimming pools. Short path to the beach 100 mtrs. Pool and beach bar.
When weather, is not so good, main hotel rooms, can become “chilly”, floor one has some settees, so you can still sit in the sun.
The town of Port El Kantaoui is only 2minutes walk, along cobbled pavements or “wheel” on the road, but beware in a wheelchair (or even crossing, on crossings) you feel a bit of a target.
Entertainment was abit scarce, but it was December (not the high season).
Christmas and New Year GALA dinners were waiter service, 7 course meals (menu issued in advance, so you can notify them of any dislikes). With music and dancers.
On Christmas morning the children have gifs from Father Christmas (and even WHEELCHAIR users!!).
We took an excursion to the desert, to ride a camel, visit El Jem, the salt lakes, on the Red Lizard train into the Atlas Mountains.
Trip on a Galeon ship and a anther trip on the Albatross Catamaran.
Would return, to this hotel, knowing that it has acceptable access and that this hotel is NOT in the centre of a built up area.

Hotel located within 10 minutes walk of the port at Port El Kantaoui. There is lots of shops and cafes. Reception area in the hotel was cold as lots of marble.
Staff spoke good English and were friendly. No entertainment in the hotel though, but there is an Irish bar across the road. Lots of choice of food, it was self service, each evening you sit at the same table, but in the morning you can sit anywhere.
There is inside and outside pool, both were cold though in December. Gym, sauna and steam room but you have to pay extra for these things.

My husband and I stayed in the Marhaba Palace Hotel and were very pleased with every thing, yes the rooms are a bit dated but the service more than makes up for it. I am a fussy eater but I always found something I could eat. Staff are very very helpful.
Port el Kantoui is lovely, beautiful harbour. I must say the making of the holiday was the sahara caravan - 2 days consisting of riding camels, jeeps, horse drawn carriages, from the desert to the mountains, topping it of with a overnight stay in luxury hotel. The trip was well worth it. Would definitely stay in Marhaba Palace again. All in all a super holiday.

We arrived to Marhaba Palace on the 28th October, when we arrived we had to wait 2 hours for our room as we checked in and they gave us our key and our room hadn’t been cleaned.
The staff in reception were very ignorant and rude. Food choice was not very good, all repetitive and catered more for the Germans and Swedish.
When you went out on the street you got a lot of verbal abuse if you didn’t go in their shops.
There were hardly any shops; they all sold the same things. Nothing around to go see to help pass any time on. Because of the abuse you got we never really went out on the streets only went out if we wanted to go to the supermarket.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone or go back again. We spent main of our holiday stuck in our hotel rooms reading, watching TV, and sleeping. This was not a very good holiday at all, also there was bad weather and there were no entertainment, it was like staying in an old people's retirement home.
The only good thing about this holiday is: the staff in the restaurant (morning and evening) was very kind and helpful and also the staff from the bar was very kind and friendly!
Overall I did not like this holiday at all!

The hotel at first glance was very clean and tidy however, the rooms are in desperate need of refurbishment. The hotel staff on the whole were very friendly, but we found the reception staff to be quite unhelpful and hostile at times, especially when it came to changing our travellers cheques; this was also restricted to certain times during the day, which we have NEVER experienced before!
We also had our baby's belongings stole, a number of nappies and wipes were stolen and no compensation was offered. We also were told that a number of other guests on the same floor had their belongings stolen too; a watch and camera had been stolen.
I'm sorry to say that I will not be returning to this hotel after the experience we had. The hotel is certainly NOT at the standards advertised in the brochures, I would say that this hotel is a 3* at best!

Just returned from the Marhaba Palace Hotel yesterday. We had a brilliant time. The hotel is very impressive, yes a little worn around the edges, but certainly nothing we haven't seen before! The room was fine, although on the side of the hotel so we didn't get a view of the pool or the garden, even though we specified this because it was our anniversary. Again, the room was a little worn, but the beds were very clean and extremely comfortable, a little difficult getting out of on those siesta afternoons!
The Marhaba Palace is situated right on the beach, the food is great, all meals are buffet
style and the choice is good. Although some people say food is pretty much of a 'muchness' I think it's only because there are lots of different foods and they are the same every night. About 4 different meats were on offer, plus chips, different potatoes and vegetables and lots of salad dishes. There were two soups to choose from each evening and desserts varied from fruits to cakes to puddings, etc. Breakfast again gave a good choice of cooked, hot food, different style eggs, fruits, cereals, yogurts, pastries, etc. - all good and nicely presented.
The pool area is lovely with plenty of room. Many people sneak their towels on the sunbeds each morning and then don't return until much later, which is a bit cheeky but just do the same, if you can't beat 'em (and all that).
There is a new Irish bar across the road from the hotel entrance, it's huge with varying entertainment and it's extremely clean and has a good atmosphere. There isn't much hotel entertainment but that didn't bother us as being half board, it was nice to get out for a walk at night. The hotel is only about 10mins from the marina along the beach, or 5mins by road, it's a purpose built resort so everything is shiny and new. The shops sell lovely leather items and nothing is 'tacky'. The restaurants are good and everyone seems friendly enough.
We are planning to return to the Marhaba Palace next year, the weather wasn't brilliant in October, we had a couple of thunderstorms, but we think that September will be a lot better, according to the locals, April and September are the best!
Well recommended!!! *****

Just returned from another great holiday 3rd time of going to this hotel no complaints staff are so friendly treat us like family.
The lads on the water sports are a great bunch, can even come out for a drink with you at the Irish Bar.
Your holiday is what you make it Tunisia is not for everyone but some holiday makers need to watch their manners and respect the country for what it is.
This year even went to the open air disco Bora Bora an experience but was well looked after by a local guy and have a good time.
It is a shame the hotel just don’t put a bit more entertainment on at night and possible play some music in the day by the pool.
We met up with people we met the first year so for us all to keep going back, it must be good it is the only place we have ever felt total relaxed.
Will be returning possibly not next year, give it a couple of years.

The Marhaba Palace is an attractive if not slightly dated hotel staffed by very nice people. Positioned right on the beach and a short stroll from the Port it is in an ideal position. The Lobby is fantastic, the pool is clean and well kept, all the lifts were working (we must have been lucky I hear you cry) and everywhere was spotless.
If you want to be treated like royalty then take an extra £30 per week of your stay and TIP. At the rate of 1 dinar = 40p you do not have to tip a lot to receive above excellent service. Some people may not think that they should need to tip but if you do it will make a huge difference to your holiday. The staff are not greedy and appear to be happy with any tip and they certainly remember who tips and those who don't.
The sea view rooms were large enough and kept spotless by the maids. If you want to ensure a good room email Nejib before hand and don't forget to meet him when you arrive to say thanks (after you have changed up some money).
Breakfast is the standard Buffet Fare but very fresh and also with cooked to order omelettes and fried eggs. A tip of 1 dinar (40p) to your waiter every morning will have your table ready and waiting with juice, with him guarding it. No looking around for a free table like the riff raff that have not tipped. ;-)
Dinner is once again standard good quality buffet with 3 new cooked choices every night. My family are not the worlds easiest to please with food but we found that there was not a night where there was not one choice that would suit. If you are after Haute Cuisine then it is probably best to eat out, (be careful). Leaving a 2-4 dinar tip (80p-£1.60) every night will get you flowers and a very attentive waiter (Bit cheesy but worth it for the extra attention).
So to summarise, The Marhaba Palace is a slightly dated hotel but the staff work very hard to make it look the best it can. One of our main worries before we went out was that the toilets would not be clean, thus increasing the chances of hygiene related stomach bugs, just the opposite was the case with toilets that were kept immaculately clean, even the beach toilets, well above what you would see in the UK. The hygiene level in the restaurant appeared to be kept very high as well and we did not see anyone having to clean the cutlery with their napkins, a common sight in an English restaurant/food pub.
My advice to ensure you enjoy yourself at The Marhaba Palace and in Tunisia in general is to tip. It does not have to be very much but if you offer it then the recipient is happy and it stops the embarrassing waiting that hotel staff tend to do if a tip is not proffered (not just in Tunisia). The staff work very long hours for very little pay and a small gratuity will allow them to focus there attentions on ensuring that you have a very good holiday.

I read quite a few reviews when deciding on what hotel/location to go for in Tunisia and I have to say many of them on this website were over critical (and nearly put me off going).
The hotel - was lovely. After dropping people off/picking them up from other hotels on excursions etc, we were definitely of the opinion that ours looked the nicest. This was reflected on entry to the reception hall as well, lots of marbled walls, a big chandelier and plenty of comfortable sofas and chairs. There were 3 bars at the hotel (plus a pool bar) although we didn't really experience these as we tended to go out in the evenings.
The food was of a decent standard, not amazing, restricted due to the buffet style, but better than what I was expecting. Good variation in the buffet. Same goes for breakfast. One excellent aspect was that if you wanted to go and eat elsewhere in the evenings, you could have the lunch as your 'half board' instead.
The pool was lovely, not overly busy and the hotel had its own section of beach about 50m walk away from the pool (if that!). The rooms were of a good standard and clean, the maids left the room in a lovely way after making it up each day. And we barely saw an insect all week in the hotel.
There were also sports facilities next to the hotel, although we didn't use these so I can't comment on them.
The resort - again, many other reviews I'd read said El Kantaoui was very quiet and you should go to Sousse if you wanted something more lively. We thought El Kantaoui was just right. The port was max 10mins walk from the hotel and had a good selection of restaurants and bars, along with the traditional local shops. There is a small supermarket near the hotel, along with a cash point (important as you can't take currency in). There was also a square with fountains in the middle, where each night there is a fountain display to lights and music which is magical.
Restaurants surround this so you can watch whilst eating too. It was by no means too quiet, it was busy until quiet late. The only thing that may make people say it was quiet was the small number of clubs.
We visited Sousse in the evening, and although it's worth a visit (in the daytime too) we were relieved we weren't staying there as it was too big, and we felt a lot less safe walking around in the evening. The 'shopkeepers' in El Kantaoui also seemed friendlier than other places. They would of course try and tempt you to look at their goods, but if you said no thanks, they would generally leave you alone.
If you go with Thomson, definitely do some excursions as Tunisia is a beautiful country. Trips to the south/sahara are brilliant.
I hope this helped!

The arrangements by Thomsons were OK, but there were seldom representatives at the hotel reception.
In general we would advise anyone who likes a quiet, non hassle, holiday to avoid Tunisia totally.
The room was fine - we were in a room facing towards the town and the noise from the town was very loud up to midnight.
Our tablemates in the restaurant said that the noise from poolside karaoke was just as bad from the beach side of the hotel and they were a lot younger than us!
Chambermaids were great and really deserved the largest tip! Restaurant staff were rubbish and obviously out for tips. Beach geyser was wonderful and worth every penny spent!
Sorry - but would advise against trip to Sousse - very picturesque but the most unprincipled and pushy place we have ever been to! Just don't buy anything there! You will have been robbed!
Tunisia is grotesque in its pushiness and this extends to 4 year olds, overseen by their "guardians" at a distance, in the shadows, pedalling jasmine votives just outside the hotel.
Food quite acceptable if slightly boring. Room was ideal for the two of us. Chambermaid excellent+++++
Staff, in general surly or haughty (particularly reception) and we don't think this was a language misinterpretation on our part.
Would certainly avoid Tunisia in the future and therefore any other Arab country because of our experience there.
On the whole people there, both in the hotel and around the resort, were disrespectful and, at times, threatening!

We have visited this hotel before and thought we'd try it again as it's in a fantastic location right close to the beautiful marina and shops. It's on the beach and the pool is very big with plenty of space. Not many hotels in resort are this close, most you will need a taxi to get to the marina.
The food is OK, there's always something for everyone, and even though it isn't adventurous you will always find something to eat.
The Hammam is very good and reasonably priced for relaxation and massages.
The entertainment is (as most others have mentioned) very poor and the band play to empty seats most nights.
Most of the staff are very good. The First Choice Rep is wonderful and can't do enough for you.
I just feel a need to mention that should you go to this hotel please be careful with your belongings. We had 2 valuable items stolen plus money and even a t-shirt! Should you have a problem the police are not local anyway and are in Hammam Sousse part-time.
Use a safe box (they have cctv trained on them) and don't leave valuables in your room unattended or in the reception bar.
If you must take a mobile phone don't let it out of your sight (the reception is poor in Tunisia by the way and the taxi phones are very cheap to use instead).
MP3 players are very sought after as well so only take a cheap one with you if you have to is my advice (not an ipod for instance).
Don't let this deter you from visiting as it is a lovely place to go and very reasonable on the purse too!

The Marhaba Palace hotel is very very nice. I was very impressed, the reception is breath - taking you enter to a huge chandelier hanging from the 3rd floor ceiling.
Greeted by a friendly Tunisian to open the reception doors and collect your bags off the coach, which you have been sat on travelling for 30-45 minutes from the airport.
Check-in is easy, now... like every hotel it has a little fault and in this hotel it was the lift.
The a very inconsistent lift some days it worked some it didn’t, 4 lifts in all but 1 will work at least every day but 1 lift for a hotel of such a size? I don’t think so, maybe just a bad happening of lift associated events whilst I was there.
Furthermore the food was spectacular, huge range with different meats rice potatoes desserts and various other types of food for every taste.
The Marhaba Palace is a great hotel I would recommend it to anyone.

I read a number of conflicting reviews before going to Tunisia, so was not really sure what to expect. Overall, all of the negative things I read were not really an issue.
Overall it is a really good hotel, ideally located with helpful and friendly staff.
To address some of the negative comments that have been made :
FOOD: Given the large number of guests, the hotel did a fantastic job. There was always a vast array of different dishes every night. Yes some of the dishes were always there, but at least if none of the dishes that were rotated took your fancy, there was still a lot of other dishes to fall back on.
Before going I read comments that the food was bland. Personally I didn't find this. Yes some of the dishes that could have been very spicy were only mildly spicy, but again given the variety of tourists staying at the hotel, this is entirely understandable and the dishes were still enjoyable.
TIPPING OF STAFF: Yes all the staff were hoping for tips, and who can blame them. I did not find their actions any different from that of staff at a lot of hotels that I have stayed at. I did not find any of them to be confrontational or felt myself being forced into giving a tip (which would have meant a definite "no" anyway).
In fact some of the staffs attempts to impress were quite pleasant and amusing. (The maid looking after our room found many ways of arranging the curtains, bedclothes etc, in fact one day we came back to petals on the bed).
The waiters could be a bit more obvious such as taking great time counting out your change, but again this was nothing too annoying (be aware that on their last evening you will have flowers on your table, but as soon as you have tipped them these are whisked away and placed on another table !).
GENERAL STATE OF THE HOTEL: There is no doubt that the Marhaba Palace is no longer a new hotel, and in some places does look a little tired. However this is true of a lot of hotels. I have stayed in 4* hotels that are better than this one, but I have also stayed in a lot that are a lot lot worse.
On balance if you view it as an old 4* hotel, your expectations will be met (A 4* hotel in London I stayed in a few days ago was more like a 2* compared to the Marhaba Palace !).
POOL & BEACH AREAS. Yes if you want a mattress on your sunbed, you do have to pay, and yes if you pay in advance you also get your bed reserved. However you can still go down before breakfast and "towel" a bed and it won’t cost you a Dinar, but the beds are plastic ones so a mattress might be advisable.
There is no charge for the beds on the beach, however given that the guy there is so pleasant and willing to assist, most people did tip him.
Other Points :
THE ROOMS. Our room was very clean, airy and was of a decent size. The bathroom was nothing exceptional but was far more than basic. There is a reasonable fridge in the room, and most other things that you'd expect. (By the way the bottle opener is on the wall in the bathroom, BEHIND the door).
THE LOCATION. Excellent. Right on the beach and a 5 minute stroll to the marina, either by the road or along the beach.
PRICES. Prices are a little higher than Sousse, but not too much. Most the shopkeepers and restaurant staff are very persistent and can be annoying, but as long as you are firm, and resist getting into lengthy conversations you are fine.
If you are desperate just resort to not saying anything at all, it is hard to do but most of them give up because they assume that you don’t know any of the languages they can speak. On the language front, be aware they assume that all British tourists speak with a cockney accent !
Be aware that as soon as you show an interest in something, they assume they have a sale and the rest of the conversation is just about price.
The three rules are; Haggle, Haggle and haggle some more. Actually there are a couple of shops which do have fixed prices, so if you just want to buy something with no hassle whatsoever try there (Whenever I went in, I had to queue to pay, but I think that said a lot).
THE BEER. There are various brands (including Lowenbrau and Becks) however trying to find one with any alcohol in it was impossible at times (The Becks is Becks NA, their non-alcoholic version !). The obvious comment is that this is due to it being a Muslim country, but then again the wine is quite potent, and some of it quite good.
On that point, there is a supermarket just outside the gate to the Marina that has a really good selection of wines.
Overall. The Marhaba Palace is an excellent place to stay for a relaxing holiday. We were there over a bank holiday and the hotel was full, the strange (and good) thing was, it didn't feel full. The hotel is spacious and the staffing such that there were never large queues and always somewhere to sit and relax.
I would certainly recommend the Hotel as well as the resort.

Very impressive hotel when approaching it and by far one of the better hotels in the area.
Immaculate reception area and very spacious with numerous sofas to lounge on.
Check in went smoothly.have to take a few minutes to fill in arrival cards. Yes porters will want to take your cases to room and for a measly 10/20 dinar tip(40/80p) is it really worth the hassle of doing it yourself.
The rooms are adequate but I wouldn't say great. They are clean and comfortable. The bathroom is in need of an uplift as around the shower the grouting was a little discoloured. The shower itself wasn't very powerful although we did have hot water every time we needed it.
Our room was situated on the front of the hotel which actually got the sun in the evening as it disappeared from around the pool late afternoon.
Just a word of warning the balcony rails seemed unsafe and I certainly didn’t feel safe leaning against them.
The hotel has a main bar which you will notice as you walk in and this seems the main drinking area. It also features the 'entertainment' during the week. There is another more relaxing bar past the hairdressers which have TVs scattered about.
The Moorish cafe bar where you can smoke the flavoured 'bongs' never seemed to get anyone in unless football was on the TV, as they had a bigger screen TV and showed the matches when on(A list of matches to be shown is displayed on the door).
There are 2 restaurants the one used for breakfast is apparently a la carte in the evening and is chargeable, whereas the other restaurant is where we ate as we were on the half board option.
The food is good. There is cavery each evening and omelettes being freshly made so if the numerous other choices weren't to your liking you would almost certainly find something to eat. A choice of soup was also available and this was served to you as is the icecream...which was a variety of flavours and not just tubs you so often get in hotels.
The waiters are so obviously reliant on tips and no sooner have you put a tip down it is whisked away.
The pool area is good and we always managed to find a bed...if you require a mattress thay are charged at 20dinar each (80p).
The beach restaurant is very busy and serves till about 4ish or at least it did while we were there...the beach is lovely with white sand and clear water.
The water sports are available immediately in front of restaurant and are the cheapest I've seen anywhere, infact Tunisia is avery cheap destination.
We enjoyed the quads and the camel caravan and despite what the reps tell you on the coach, we booked our trips with the fella that’s in the hotel grounds as he pays a fee to the hotel and he is a lot cheaper and after all, he needs to make a living too.
We did originally try to book through the rep but he was an hour late for the welcome meeting and we got bored waiting and wandered off... So wasn’t impressed with his service at all.
Port el Kantoui is a lovely peaceful resort with a lovely marina and numerous restaurants. The shops are much the same but there are bargains to be had. On the opposite side from marina are the fountains which in the evenings have a wonderful display to lights and music.
Did have a trip to Sousse and the medina but didn’t like it and found it scruffy.
Port el Kantoui is great for golfers as there are courses all around.
There isn't any nightlife as such as it tends to be based in the hotels, although an Irish bar has opened up opposite Marhaba Palace and it seemed the most popular place to go in the evenings... great for the football and you even get crisps and popcorn when you order a drink.
People are friendly and although they do try to persuade you to visit their shops a polite no will suffice.
I had very mixed views on visiting Tunisia but none the less I decided to try it and can honestly say I really enjoyed it.
I wanted a holiday to chill out with lovely weather and that’s exactly what I got.
