On arriving at the hotel we were greeted by warm and friendly staff, with a smile and a complimentary drink, ushered to the reception desk, whilst a bus-boy took care of our luggage.
Immediately directed to the restaurant, where the chef had prepared us a hot meal.
Reception area clean and modern. Restaurant clean and modern.
Food a real let down. Not enough of a selection and very 'samey' each day. There were 5 of us on this trip who all felt the same about the food.
Rooms clean, spacious and comfortable.
Entertainment (and I use this word loosely!) Very much below average and the Theatre where the entertainment occurred was like a fridge.
On one evening, we had to endure freezing cold temperatures whilst a man paraded around the room swinging snakes, lizards and spiders above his head and between his legs - cruel and horrible! Left early that night!
Pool area clean and spacious, plenty of sun beds on pool area and lovely private beach.
Whatever you do, no matter what the Reps tell you, don’t do the reps entertainment night. It is seriously rubbish - and so said all of us!
All the staff at the hotel were helpful, friendly and went out of their way to keep you happy.
Nothing to do outside the hotel unless you take a 30 minute walk (or short taxi ride) into the nearest town. Hustle and bustle and constantly being approached to "look in my shop".
Hired a car for the day and headed South down the coast - some weird and wonderful sights. The market at Sousse was incredible - again, weird and wonderful sights and sounds.
Enjoyed most of the experience of being amongst the locals - until one of the shop owners took offence to me not wishing to "look in his shop" (I smiled politely and said no thank you).
A little further into the market and the smell of dead meat hits you - it took me weeks to get the smell of death from my nose - shocking sights - barbaric treatment of animals.
During our stay they were 'celebrating' the festival of Ede and sacrificing sheep left right and centre.
Went on a camel ride, sold by a Muslim Arthur Daley - couldn’t believe my eyes when saw these sad creatures being whipped into order by the 'staff' at the stables.
To top it off, we were told that the humps had been cut off to make it more comfortable for tourists to ride on - you can guess that I gave this one a miss and travelled by horse and cart instead!
On returning to the stables, we were offered fresh oranges and mint tea and allowed to see the other horses in the stables - shocking and upsetting are the two words that come to mind.
In Summary; if you want a holiday where you are going to stay in the hotel and not venture out, this is the place for you, unless you like tasty, varied food and can accept barbaric treatment of animals.
However, where else will you see a sheep on the back of a motorbike, tied to a bar on the back of a moving truck or over someone’s shoulders?

We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks in September 2005. Having been to Tunisia and on a Thomson Gold holiday in 2001 we thought this would be a fantastic holiday as this time we were booked on a platinum trip.
The hotel itself was nice to look at and clean enough, but the overall experience for us was very poor.
We had only been offered half board in the UK, we normally go all inclusive, and when we arrived at the resort all other guests were being fitted with their obligatory arm bands.
We asked to upgrade to AI to be told it cost £12 per person per day. In light of the prices of alcohol etc we felt that this was affordable so we did.
On returning home we could've asked for it, even though it wasn't offered and wasn't in the brochure and it would have been £7 each!
During the whole holiday we felt that the platinum standard was not achieved in any way and the staff were brusque, rude and clearly motivated to serve German Guests but not British for some reason.
Every time we would go to reception they would insist in speaking to us in German! I actually speak French, which is one of the Tunisian languages so I did that to challenge their rudeness!!
The only good thing to come out of the holiday was we met a lovely couple from the Midlands, who we have been on holiday with again and who too were very unhappy with this holiday! We got some monies refunded.

I can't work out why there seem to be some rather negative reviews about the hotel here. My fiancé and I have just returned from a week here and really enjoyed it.
The hotel is beautiful - bedrooms very nice with good views, reception is very impressive, dining room bright and airy, many nice areas to sit and relax.
Out side the pool area was lovely (although the outdoor pool was closed for maintenance), and the situation right next to the beach is great.
I can't criticise the facilities in the hotel - the indoor pool was nice, and always very clean, usually very quiet too, bars and lounges really comfortable, there is also an adequate games room with a couple of pool tables and games machines which is good fun.
We didn't go on any excursions or join many organized activities as we primarily went to relax and be very lazy! The place is great for this purpose - we have come home feeling really relaxed.
Apparently there are some great trips, and there seemed to be plenty of sports activities going on around the place for those wishing to be a bit more active. We were happy to lie on the beach or by the pool in the sun (which was always out).
The food and drink was great. There was lots of choice from simple things like pizza and chips, suitable for kids, to interesting Tunisian traditional foods. There was always plenty, and was replenished throughout sittings - it always looked and tasted fresh and at a good temperature.
Most of all I want to compliment all the staff of the hotel, who were fantastic. They all served us or went about their work with a smile on their faces and went out of their way to make sure everything was to our liking.
They seem very happy in their work and take pride in what they do - and rightly so as they all work hard - there are always cleaners tending to various parts of the hotel, and the 'animation team' after playing various sports with guests during the day proceeded to dance with the children at the 7.30 'mini-disco' then put on shows in the theatre room later in the evenings - and I never once saw any of them yawn.
The waiters and bar tenders were very attentive and always so friendly. The management team were always milling about the hotel checking things and chatting politely with guests.
Most of the staff speaks very good English, and I think German too, but appreciated the odd word of French I could muster.
The only tiny downside I can mention, and it is a small point, is that the hotel allowed people selling trips and tours into the hotel to bother the guests by trying to ply them with trips we didn't want.
We had been told to expect this sort of unwanted attention in markets and towns etc, but were caught unawares on the Monday morning, by a guy calling himself the owner of the hotel and organising a trip for all the Thomson customers, giving the impression it was free - of course it wasn't.
Overall though, a great and very relaxing holiday.

We were very unfortunate with the weather and as a consequence spent much of our time stuck in the hotel.
My husband has a bad back so we weren't able to do many of the coach trips, as they all involved a long drive.
The hotel was ok but I wouldn't consider it the 4 star that it is supposed to be. The hotel wasn't very well situated and there wasn't much to do in between meals.
There was only one English TV station and that went on the blink following a thunderstorm. The food was ok but got a bit samy by the end of our week.
I wouldn't recommend going to Tunisia at this time of year - it is definately out of season and were virtually the only people walking along the promonade.

If I could give this place 0/10 I definitely would!
Thomson platinum have seriously disappointed me this time! We arrived to be greeted by staff who didn't speak a word of English and looked very angry that we had disturbed them.
The breakfast the next morning was very disappointing. A few people noticed that most of the food sat there uncovered crawling with flies and it was very much the same in the evening.
Noticed that most nights it was the same thing on the menu every night and what seemed to be leftovers from the previous nights.
The prices in the hotel are absolutely ridiculous £8 for a shot of spirits! Don't bother looking for any restaurants in the area as there aren't any and the rep advised us not to go out of the 'highly guarded' hotel during the night.
The shopping centre (if you can all it that) was full of pickpockets and nasty dusty old shops. The pool area was filthy and my husband and I were taken to hospital with severe stomach upsets. Trips to the hospital should be avoided at all costs!
Overall the worst holiday I have ever been on!

My husband and I have just returned home for one week at the Riu el Kebir. What a brilliant hotel. The food, staff and hotel were fantastic.
It was our first visit to Tunisia and had read a few bad reviews about this hotel. How wrong those reviews were! The staff were so friendly and could not do enough for you. There was a good range of food and the quality was very good. Rooms were large in size and very clean.
Location of the hotel is good not too far from Hammamet town, you can either walk (30 mins slow pace) or take a taxi for about £1. This hotel deserves a 5* rating I cannot wait to go back.
This is an excellent, great...

This is an excellent, great value for money holiday. I loved it and had a great time, hence the 10/10 rating. My mum had a few complaints but she always does! To summarise:
Good points:
Weather - lovely.
Staff - really friendly and honestly go out of their way to make sure you’re having fun.
Activities - loads of options of stuff to do in the day like beach sports/water sports etc
The view - sea view is amazing.
Beach- literally on the hotel and is so quiet with no people coming up to you to sell
things like most other sun holiday resorts.
Food - variety and all of it dead nice.
Rooms - really spacious and honestly nicer than they look in the pictures.
Bad points (according to my mum!)
Food - if you go to lunch quite late, you get to catch some of the flies landing on it because it’s been sitting out for so long. But obviously as long as you don’t go get food after its been sitting out in heat for 2 hours you’ll not get this problem.
Activities - the staff call you lazy if you’re young and all you do is lie in the sun! But they’re only joking and just trying to get you to join in
The journey home - ok not exaggerating now, we were in the airport for like nearly 3 hours. All of the British tourists travel home on the same day and the airport is tiny.
Everyone tries to push through you to get to their check in but there’s nowhere for you to move so everyone ends up all shoved together pushing each other nowhere. But the worst is where they stamp your passport because you’re literally stood in the same line for about an hour. I just get dead stressed in queues!
But honestly it was such a great break and I would definitely recommend it and am surely going back again. Although I would avoid going peak time because of the airport -I can’t imagine how awful it would be with even more people!
We have just returned from the...

We have just returned from the most relaxing week’s holiday ever. I felt I'd been away much longer than 1 week!!! I'm sure this had a lot to do with 4 days spent in spa - excellent value for money. Skip the excursions. We didn't venture far from hotel except to go to Sousse on the Showstoppers night out. A great show but journey rather long.
Hotel staff can't do enough to please and all comments much same as previously noted. Rooms excellent. We'd paid to have room upgraded to junior suite and they upgraded us even further and we had an excellent room with bedroom, sitting room and 3 balconies + a great sea view which we hadn't paid for!
I wasn't keen on sitting in same seat for dinner every night but when I asked to be moved as we were 1st sat to close to smoking section we were moved without any fuss. Food plentiful and varied, Tunisian restaurant is closed for winter but they do a Tunisian night once a week in main restaurant. We did suffer from upset tummies but could not pinpoint the cause.
The Thomson rep has now been changed and although the new guy appears to be a bit shy, we only saw him in his 2nd or 3rd week into the job and he appeared to be working hard (visiting one of the sites for an excursion on his day off) to get familiarised with his patch. He wasn't pushy about excursions.
This was a fab winter holiday - very few children in evidence. The animation team still put their heart and soul into keeping everyone who wanted to be entertained and their evening shows were hilarious. It is a quiet hotel and it is in a quiet area -Port El Kantaoui appears to be the place to be if you want night life.
We would definitely return to this hotel in winter to re-charge batteries, great value for money.

I am so glad I did not read some of the feedback on this site before we went or I am not convinced we would have booked.
We went for 7 nights starting 18 October 2006. We couldn't have asked for better weather, it was in the eighties every day.
The hotel is spotless and the staff are very friendly and happy to help. The hotel Manager runs a tight ship and everyone does their job professionally. We went to the welcome meeting and along with the Thomson rep; all the management introduced themselves to us and explained all of the facilities. The rep himself was a bit miserable though and throughout the holiday he didn't seem to be available much, not as though we missed him, all he was interested in were selling excursions.
The 'Animation' staff worked very hard in the day and also in the evening. We had two girls with us ages 11 and 12 and they spent so much time with the team and they could not have done more for them.
The down side to the holiday had nothing to do with this fantastic hotel but with Thomson’s when on them morning of the last day we were all informed that the plane that was coming to take us home had 13 seats less than passengers travelling and they needed volunteers to fly to Bristol at midnight and they would then be bussed up to Manchester. When we were ready to leave the hotel I asked the rep “was everything now OK” and he replied “yes”. When we got to the airport he then informed the people on the full coach “as some of you know there is a problem with the plane being to small by 13 seats and as there had only been 6 volunteers 7 people who are expecting to travel to Manchester will not being and will have to go to Bristol and be compensated by £100 each” He went on to say “it’s not my fault it’s my bosses”. There was then a mad rush to join the queue and once in the queue a rep informed people at the front not to worry as it would be the last seven not getting on as once all the seats were allocated that would be it and the last seven would be booked on the flight to Bristol three hours later.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, but I for one will never use Thomson’s again. Apparently Kenny the rep is leaving this hotel for pastures new, this can only be a good for this hotel, god help his new assignment.
Well what can I say, if this is...

Well what can I say, if this is what Thomson call platinum I don't think I will try their gold.
In Dec my hubby and I went to Tunisia for our honeymoon and stayed a Sousse, we had such a great time we decided to come back.
Arrived very late at night, the staff were very nice, meal was waiting for us, salads and bread, which I think had been sitting for a while.
We arrived in our room which was very nice but being dark I couldn't see the sea view which I paid for, when I woke up I had the view of lovely sea behind a run down building. Went to the welcome meeting where the rep tried very hard to sell his trips saying that they were for platinum guests only what a load of rubbish I went on most of them last xmas with my hubby.
In the Thomson guide it said wind surfing was available, when we asked the rep where, he didn't know and didn't even bother to try and help. Just after us a family asked the same question and got much the same answer.
The food was good always something different to eat, one thing I was very shocked at was all the juices were powder and if you wanted a cappuccino it was made with instant coffee, me and hubby both got upset tummy and so did many other people in the hotel.
I will not be paying the extra for platinum again as the one we stayed in at xmas was fair better for a lot less money.
This was a really good holiday....

This was a really good holiday. I never wanted to leave. There were people of all nationalities there. I am only 16 and there was so much for me to do. Activities, I made loads of friends because there were a lot of people my age there. Lots of sexy French boys which I was very happy about. There seemed to be a lot of people from Liverpool there which I thought was strange but I made friends with them all.
The food was lovely. The hotel was the cleanest one I have ever stayed in (one day I saw the maids cleaning the corners of the floor with a toothbrush) they also left really pretty patterns on our beds every day. There were activities to do on the beach. I really liked the Jet Ski’s. The beach was about 20 steps away from the swimming pool! The animation team were brilliant especially Dario and Haino. Overall I had a brilliant time at Hotel El Kebir.

My husband and I stayed here for 10 nights and had a very disappointing holiday. The arrival was welcoming (after an unexpected 2 hour transfer from the airport!), and the manager couldn't do more to help.
We both loved the pool, beach and the sea was gorgeous. We couldn't have asked for better weather. The 'Animation' staff worked very hard in the day and in the evening. The other hotel staff were also very friendly and worked hard. No complaints about them.
We did find the evenings VERY quiet after the entertainment had ended, and couldn’t get a drink after 12pm. The disco had been cancelled, due to complaints! Also, we had to pay for bottled water in the hotel, until after midnight, then it was free.
A couple of days in to our holiday we found out that many people had gone down with a sickness 'bug' a week before we arrived. We didn't ever find out if it was a bug or if it was the food, but there were a lot of people being ill daily. We even saw a child being ill on the poolside. Neither myself or my husband were ill, but we found it very hard to relax knowing what was going on around us.
We were careful of what we ate, and didn't find the food very inviting. We mostly drank the fizzy water, and didn't trust the water from the poolside bar area. We hardly saw the rep all the time we were there. He even asked us to give him a good review on the questionnaire that we had to fill out on the plane, so he could go to Egypt next year. It sounded like he did not want to be there either.
I think we would have enjoyed it a lot more if there had not been so much illness around us. My husband and I have been put off Tunisia, and are very disappointed in Thomson. I would not rate this hotel a 'Platinum' or give it 5*.

My Husband and I have just returned from Riu El Kebir, we were on our Honeymoon.
The hotel is spotless and the staff are very friendly and happy to help. The hotel Manager runs a tight ship and everyone does their job professionally.
Rooms are cleaned daily and food is fantastic with so much choice.
Only downside was the evening entertainment, it was poor and not professional at all. But the Animation Team did their best and the kids there loved the shows and the day time activities.
If you love nightlife, then you will be disappointed with this hotel, but if like my Husband and I you are looking for a relaxing time during the day at the pool or beach, nice food and chill out time at night then this Hotel is perfect for you.
The Pool area and Beach have loads of sun loungers, which are free but if you want a cushion then you have to be up at the crack of dawn to get one.
The Old Medina (Market) is 30 minute walk, but best to take a taxi (3DT - just over £1), be prepared for haggling and hassle in the Medina, every trader will attempt to lure you into their stall / shop and they are VERY persistent. EVERY shop in Hammenent you can haggle, even the fixed prices can be cut down! We didn't like the pushiness of the traders and opted to shop at OMAR's shop directly across from the Hotel; Omar was a polite and helpful trader and his prices where half the price of that in the Old Medina, he said "I am cheaper than Asda Price!" (Which we found hysterical!).
There is a small supermarket also across from the Hotel which is opened later (Till around 9pm). But you really do not need to shop as everything is available in the Hotel. We did pay 2DT for bottled water from the bar area though.
There are a few shops inside the Hotel but they are over priced and you still have to haggle in there too!
At the Hotel I opted for a full body massage (40DT) which was amazing - I recommend! They have many different types of massage on offer and also other treatments and they are great value for money.
To sum up - we had a fantastic honeymoon. It was relaxing and stress free and we felt we were well looked after by all Hotel staff. (Holiday Rep was never about though, only seen him once!!)

The transfer time to our Hotel was approx 2 hours so by the time we arrived we were hungry and tired. We went straight to reception where the Hotel Manager checked us in straight away and then showed us the way to the restaurant for a light bite to eat (off a buffet trolley) and something to drink (wine was on tap as well as several fruit juice type drinks). The bags were then taken to our room - ps they expect a small tip in ANY currency so don't worry if you haven't exchanged anything at that point. The hotel itself and the room was beautiful, with flowers on the bed and in the sink, very clean and tastefully decorated with a large balcony overlooking the sea.
The next morning we went for breakfast - here you were spolit for choice - cereals, fresh breads, fruit, cheese as well as a good selection of hot food freshly prepared in front of you at several cooking stations - be aware though - the bacon and sausages they have there is not at all like what we have here in the UK - the bacon is basically lumps of gristle and pork rind and the sausage is more like the tinned variety fried off - a bit strange but then again you are on the coast of North Africa!
The holiday rep meeting was okay - all the management introduced themselves to us and explained all of the facilities. The rep himself was a bit miserable though and throughout the holiday he didn't seem to be available much - maybe he was having a bad week, we just don't know ha ha! BE AWARE - don't bother with any of the trips! The rep really bigs them up and makes them sound great - they're not - they are absolute rubbish. We went on 2 excursions - one to Port El Kantaoui combined with a trip to the Coliseum and also a Wildlife park trip combined with a boat trip. The first trip took 2 hours to get there to see the coliseum ruins of which we had only an hour to explore, and the port took another hours (but it was on the way back) and we could only have a look around for 3/4 of an hour so you spent more time on the bus then anything. The second trip to the nature park was okay - you got to see lions, tigers etc but then the boat trip was appalling - it was mainly for kids. We didn't set sail for hour after actually getting on the boat, you were squashed up, a bloke dressed as a pirate did a couple of somersaults and then you got a horrible fish dinner!! Also, there was nothing to drink at all apart from tap water which you just couldn't trust so it wasn't great at all.
The main let down was the fact there was no alcohol - its a Muslim country unfortunately. Also, you were really secluded at the hotel i.e. no restaurants or cafes around to have a look at.
Hammamet was about 10mins away in taxis which were really cheap so that was okay. There are 2 medinas there - one in Jasmine Hammamet and then old Hammamet. The new one Jasmine was a lot better - it is purpose built, clean and tidy. The old one which was built hundreds of years ago as a fortress was very cramped and maze like. Word of warning here though - the people there are annoying, pestering and at times quite rude. They are trying to get you to buy something all the time and you feel as if you are unable to look at anything because of this. One guy actually trapped us in his shop until my husband threatened him! Ignore them completely - it feels rude but believe me - they have no manners in trying to make a sale! But then again, there are some bargains to be had. Brush up on your bartering!
Overall, okay but no nightlife and not enough to drink by any means. We definitely will not be going back.

Flew from Teesside, arrived at hotel at ungodly hour of 4.00am, very fast check in by lovely staff. Cases rushed to our room. Woke up at 8.30 and went for breakfast, massive dining room full of ignorant Europeans flouncing round, definitely caters for them rather than the Brits. Lots of croissants, cooked meats. Cheeses, bowls of jam, honey, natural yoghurt, all uncovered and open to flies, coughs, sneezes, grubby hands. Nothing refrigerated, just sat on ice. Staff carrying massive tureens of boiling hot water/milk for the coffee with kids running in front of them, how no one was scalded, bacon, hideous. Sausage, horrific. Someone had the omlette and found a load of egg shells.
The pool snack bar is the worst health hazard. Cooked meats, slabs of butter, bread, jam none of them covered and all sat in 30 degree heat for hours on end. During the day you can only get drinks from this pool bar, self service. Lunch is always 3 different types of pizza slices, chips (scandalous) pasta, spaghetti, fish, and partially cooked beef burgers, I fed 3 a day to the gorgeous kittens who live in the bushes. The covered air conditioned snack bar opens at 12.00.
Pancakes and cakes are served about 4pm, kids are drooling into the chocolate sauce, again uncovered. 2 sittings for dinner, 6.30 and 8.30. We went to the early sitting you get the same table throughout your stay for dinner. The food was very repetitive, every thing was fried or deep fried, my husband has gastric reflux which he takes tablets for, he was starving all the time as the food was too greasy for him to eat, he had the runs the entire time he was there. It was too noisy and some nights was bedlam with kids running round, knocking food all over.
The best meal we had was in the small Tunisian style restaurant within the hotel. It was waiter service and you felt as if you had really had something substantial. The entertainment team worked really hard and were all lovely. They did a black and white minstrel show one night, we were quite shocked, some snobby English boys (the type only mummy would love) were very rude to the lads on the animation team and also tried to be aggressive to younger kids in the games room. They were under 18 and they were drinking alcohol like it was the first time they had tasted it (probably was) a few of them were giving much younger kids alcohol and it got quite nasty in the games room. His Daddy said he had paid full price and was entitled to alcohol, well I paid full price for my 13 yr old, but I wasn’t demanding his share of the alcohol.
The spirits are rough and need lots of mixers in them. Evening entertainment is not for teenagers, or most people really, very enthusiastic but soul destroying. Some people went out of the hotel one night but returned within 15 minutes, having witnessed 2 fights between the locals and getting dragged into shops and not getting out until they had bought something. The staff are lovely, the hotel is cleaned constantly but food hygiene lets it down. The pool is great but again these old Arab women get into it wearing long dresses, tights, shoes, headscarves, veils, the lot. Absolutely disgusting. I would not go back to Tunisia.
