" Me and my girlfriend wanted a week... "

Me and my girlfriend wanted a week away in July. We wanted to go to Platanas and found this hotel online. The hotel itself was about 4 miles outside Platanas.

We booked all inc only because it was cheap we really wanted self catering. It was a lovely hotel most rooms have a sea view that is absolutely perfect. I would recommend car hire as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. I have never driven abroad before and found it very easy. We picked our car up at the airport when we landed and dropped it off there when we left. The all inc in this hotel to be honest was very poor.

The drinks were ok and were on all day until 10.30 pm. The food on the other hand was disgusting I wouldn’t feed my dog with rubbish that was served up. It wasn’t just us complaining about the food we met 3 other couples in the same boat. Luckily we had a car and could get away from it the others weren’t so lucky. We only ate in the hotel the first day and had toast for breakfast the other days. Apart from the food the hotel was very nice.

We found a lovely little place about 7 miles down the coast called Bali where we went a few times and the food there was lovely I think because there was more choice. If your looking for nightlife Rethymnon is great it has so much choice for shopping, food and bars. Overall this holiday was very good and I would recommend it if you can get a good deal.

" Hotel in quiet corner of Crete. Low... "

Hotel in quiet corner of Crete. Low rise apartments no more than three stories high, set out like a small Greek village, with paths running criss cross over the site.

Very well lit at night with a feeling of security. Large sea water swimming pool, Very cold at this time of year, also second large pool filled with normal water, a Childs pool with slide into big pool, also very cold. Rooms cleaned every day, with fresh towels. Apartments vary in size from two bed with bathroom to large double rooms and everything in between. Breakfast runs from 07.30 to 09.45am. Lunch from 12.30 to 14.30. Dinner from 18.45 to 21.30.

The food was excellent with a good selection of Greek and European starters main courses and sweets waiter service for drinks with all meals except breakfast, which is self service tea, coffee or juice. Waters and bar staff and receptionists are all extremely friendly as are all the other employees. The mixture of guests are predominantly German but don’t let this put you off as it means the overall standards are higher. The hotel itself is just a short walk from the village of Analipsi with bars tavernas etc. But most guests prefer to stay on site at night as everything is all paid for.

There is a cabaret every night in a 100 seater theatre, the show is different every night only repeated every two weeks. During the day guests can do Tennis, Volley Ball and other numerous activities. There are also two pool bars which open at 10.00am, the seawater pool bar also serves pizza chips and cakes all day till 18.00pm. There is even a small Greek church on site which is very beautiful inside which the guests can use if they wish.

My overall opinions are of a well run very friendly feeling and safe environment which I would not hesitate to return to , spread out over quite a considerable site very well run with excellent food. P.S the beach is just across a very quiet road but its nothing to shout about.
" My partner and myself have recently... "

My partner and myself have recently returned from a two week break to the hotel and found it to be the worst holiday of our lives.

On arrival the hotel manager carried out a welcome meeting but subsequently failed to mention the restaurant procedure which led to everyone who arrived with us receiving an individual ticking off by the jumped up restaurant manager.

The rooms where host to the most uncomfortable beds we have ever had the displeasure of sleeping in and I don’t think the bed sheets where changed for the full fortnight that we spent there.

The entertainment around the poolside (which where the best feature of the hotel by far) during the day was fine if not repetitive and by the end of the 1st week we didn’t have to look at our watches to tell the time we just had to look up and see what activity was being played.

The entertainment at the evenings was sadly lacking and could barely be classed as entertainment. It was left to the same group of people who entertain the guests around the pool to try and entertain them at night and I must say they failed miserably.

Our accommodation was AI and we were expecting the drinks to be the usual local brew but to find local brew that has been watered down to this extent was appalling. I don’t think I once saw anyone even slightly tipsy never mind drunk and some of the people were drinking from morning till night.

The food in the restaurant was another repetitive element of the holiday and would advise any one who has children to stay clear of the hotel. Every dinner and evening meal would see the same choices over and over. The menu would host things like roast pork and veal stew with grilled fish one day and the next day it maybe roast veal and pork stew with poached fish. However you could always rely on the 2 types of pasta served with every meal every day.

It's not like you can just get out of the complex either as the town of Analipsis is a good 25 minute walk from the hotel and only hosts a few small bars and restaurants (no entertainment to be found anywhere).

All in all a very disappointing experience and a place we will be avoiding in the future and we advise all who read this to do the same.

" I cannot praise this hotel highly... "

I cannot praise this hotel highly enough. The staff, from reception to maintenance and everyone in between were very efficient and friendly. The food was superb, with an excellent choice at every meal, all prepared with fresh ingredients delivered each day.

Two clean pools, ample loungers and umbrellas. Entertainment every night to suit almost everyone. A bus each morning to Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos at the gate, returning in the afternoon. The beach is a three minute walk, the village of Analipsis is about ten to fifteen minutes away, depending on age and time of day. The village has fair selection of shops, bars and tavernas. one pharmacy and a couple of medical centres.

Car hire is widely available and the cars all seemed new and well maintained. I would recommend this hotel and resort to couples and families alike, for the best value for money holiday.
" Hotel nice and clean, location very... "

Hotel nice and clean, location very poor.

Tour operator terrible as 2 days before they changed our hotel, impossible to see rep they left you hanging about all day waiting for the rep to turn up.

On return you couldn’t get to speak to Manas at Hellenic Voyages. To make it worse my daughter as just gone and the hotel Astir Beach as no entertainment and no available sunbeds. Plus the Viking airline as left her suitcase in Manchester and 2 days into the holiday she still hasn’t got her suitcase. She can’t wait to come home and this is her first time away abroad without her parents.

" I fully agree with Mrs Henry’s... "

I fully agree with Mrs Henry’s comments.

We arrived at the Europa Beach at lunchtime and after an extremely fast check-in at the hotel we were shown into the dining room, where everything was fully explained by the excellent Restaurant Manager. Every waitress was extremely pleasant and polite, and always had a smile, nothing was too much trouble. The choice and availability of food was superb, plenty of it, and always piping hot.

The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Our hand basin in the bathroom got blocked one evening and the plumber was fixing it within 15 minutes of it being reported, we couldn’t believe the efficiency and cheerfulness of all the staff (you don’t get that at home!)

Although the Europa Beach is slightly isolated, there is no real reason to leave the hotel, everything you need is on-site. The gardens and two pool areas are well maintained, and the entertainments team were brilliant with children and adults alike. The poolside bars were well stocked at all times and once again the staff were amazingly friendly. The same goes for the indoor bar too.

If you want to shop, there is a bus to and from the hotel daily, and the local village is a pleasant 20 minute stroll along the beach front. Taxis are readily available if needed at a reasonable cost.

All in all, I would say that if you want a very relaxing holiday, with friendly staff, plenty of food and drink then you won’t go far wrong if you go to the Europa Beach. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible.

" I would recommend all the staff... "

I would recommend all the staff concerned , the booking agents, hotel staff and the airline staff. We flew with Thomas Cook Airlines UK from Glasgow and the airline cabin crew were so pleasant and helpful both outward and inward flights. I would suggest to the other person who gave such a terrible review on his cabin crew on the previous report that he should not have had his legs in the aisle in the first place.

After booking our holiday I decided to look at the reviews on holiday watchdog. I am sorry that I did because I was expecting the worst and experienced the best.

The Europa Beach Hotel is slightly out of the way and would not suit the 18-30 age groups. The town of Analipsi is a short walk away and the nightlife and shops of Hersonissos an inexpensive taxi ride or you could catch the local bus. The city of Heraklion can be reached by bus for 2 euros and the bus collects you from just outside the hotel.

On arrival at the hotel we were shown to our room without delay and we found it to be extremely clean, adequate storage space for two people and air conditioning that really does work. The beds were very comfortable and when we requested extra pillows, they were in our room within ten minutes. The maid kept our room very clean throughout the fortnight and like all of the staff was always smiling.

Going in May I would definitely say is the best time. Although the hotel was busy, mainly French, Germans and Italians, both pools always had vacant sunbeds at any time of day, that is a bonus in my book. The entertainment staff at the poolside were the best with adults and children alike and they all spoke perfect English.

My partner and myself required medical treatment whilst in the resort, nothing serious, bad back and bronchitis. The reception Staff and the Medhotels rep. could not have been more helpful. The medical centre could give our hospitals a few lessons and the hotel doctor came to visit me three times. The hotel reception telephoned my prescription to the pharmacy and it was delivered to the hotel. Of course we both had to pay our excess but that is the norm with insurance companies.

The Europa Beach Hotel: The most friendly and pleasant staff we have ever met and we have both been in many hotels in many different countries. The food is lovely and has something for all tastes including my partner who is extremely fussy. All dishes are replenished as soon as they are down to roughly four servings and are piping hot.

We are going back most definitely this year and should you read this report please follow suit, you will not regret it.

" When we arrived at the hotel and... "

When we arrived at the hotel and found it to be remote and nothing like the advertised holiday destination. The description of this holiday and its amenities onsite and the surrounding area are not correctly reflected and anyone who had visited this location or researched it would come to the same conclusion.

Our holiday started with our arrival at Gatwick, we were among the first to collect our tickets and check in, and we then waited in the departure lounge and boarded the plane. Once onboard we were very disappointed to find our seats were at the immediate rear of the plane and separated by the isle. This being mine and my partners first holiday together it already was turning out to be disappointing the flight was with Airtours.

Once in the air the airhostesses began to serve food and drinks as they normally do, after a while it became quite annoying as the woman wheeling the trolley kept knocking my leg. By about the six occasion I was almost sleeping when I was awoken by a sharp pain in my foot, she had pushed the trolley onto my toes and as I was wearing sandals it hurt somewhat. She then proceeded to give me a really filthy look and kept going into the room behind me where some of the other staff were all chatting, she immediately started telling the them how I had been giving her dirty looks most of the flight and next time she was going to tell me what she thought of me. For reference the flight number was FCA36C departing to Crete Heraklion from Gatwick at 7:30.

I assumed she didn’t realise that the people sitting outside the room could hear her talking. Never the less I felt very upset that I had been accused while having done nothing, and to make it worse she treated me as if I was the one doing something wrong. An apology would have been nice.

Well having arrived at the airport in Crete, we awaited our suitcases and proceeded outside to meet our rep from MED HOTELS. I was told by lastminute that a rep would be waiting outside the airport to arrange our transfers.

Well, no sign of any med hotels rep and everyone I asked had any idea where med hotels staff could be found. So after walking around for a while out side the airport we came across a little booth with a med hotels sign, and may I add was no where near the airport exit.

The man at the desk was not very friendly to me as he seemed to want me to produce a travel voucher, but after several attempts to explain I had booked a late holiday and didn’t have one, we eventually got on to a bus.

Next arriving at the hotel, after driving all night from Wales to Gatwick we were really tired and wanted to get settled, we started to unpack but promptly stopped as there was no where to store our clothes. The room only had a small hanging area and bedside drawers, so we had to leave everything in the suitcases.

That evening we though it might be nice to have a bath, well the taps didn’t work. They did manage to repair them however but it didn’t make much difference as the pressure on the tap was rubbish and the water had so much chlorine in it after having a shower or bath you still smelled of chemicals.

The bath did not look like it had ever been cleaned, and during the stay it was never once cleaned. I opened a bar of soap and left a little bit of the paper on the sink table, I’m sure it is still there now, during our stay no one ever cleaned the tables or any part of the room. All the cleaners did was replace the towels and make the beds.

When we arrived we had some left over chocolate / sweets which had melted so I put in the bin bag and tied it up to stop it making a mess. I then put a Tesco bag in to the bin so we could use it until it was cleaned in the morning. That Tesco bag I’m sure is still there now, it was never taken out just emptied.

Having been there Tuesday evening, Wednesday night my partner started to feel sick, she had pains in her stomach and a really bad headache, so we took it easy thinking it was just to much sun or a bug which normally goes in 24hrs.

Thursday night she was really sick, constantly using the loo and terrible pains so bad she was crying, so over all she was in a really bad state.

A doctor was called Friday morning and my partner was taken to the Medicare centre where we spend the day, she was on a drip, had x-rays, blood test, ultrasound scan’s etc. We returned to the hotel £50 less having had to pay an excess for our insurance.

Saturday she again was still sick and had to go back to the Medicare centre, having had more tests, drips, x-rays etc. she was rush to hospital where she was admitted with intense abdominal pains and dehydration.

By now we had not slept for the last 3 days, my partner was unable to eat anything as she couldn’t keep it down, I was not feeling so good due to the fact we were up all night with my partner being ill and me looking after her.

I think it goes to say both of us had never wished to just go home so much before.

So having been admitted to the hospital in heraklion, we found the conditions terrible. The staff were rude, and seemed to lack competency, my partner had to have over 5 needles before they could get a drip in her arm, they dropped the drip on the floor causing air bubbles to enter her blood stream and were completely useless. Due to the care she received she still has bruises all over her arms 3 weeks later.

The doctors in Greece were useless; they suspected food poising or appendicitis. Now I am sorry, I personally know it’s not hard to tell the difference, especially as they had taken 3 lots of blood and other samples from her over the last few days.

The hospital ordeal was horrible, having had to argue immensely with Greek doctors not to remove her appendix, we spent the worst night of our lives in a dirty little hospital with no one who spoke English. My partner was discharged at our repeated requests finally diagnosed with food poisoning.

We then had to find our own way from the city back to the resort which in a taxi cost a lot we then spent the next day with on pain killers, Imodium and re-hydration supplements, eagerly awaiting our return home.

I have to say this holiday has been the most stressful and terrible time of our life’s. . The hospital was the worst I have ever seen and I lived in Zimbabwe for 13 years. Hygiene was terrible, nurses didn’t even wear protective gloves working with needles / blood, they simply wiped it up with a tissue and placed it in the bin next to the bed. We were lucky to have not died through the infection caught from the lack of hygiene at the hotel.

During our time there we were not the only ones with food poisoning we saw several people walking around holding their stomachs in pain, and spoke with some, mostly German visitors.

I have put this review on this site as I simply feel it’s not fair to warn other about lastminute and Europa beach hotel. After complaining to lastminute they denied all responsibility and told us to go away. So if you go with them and have a problem don’t expect any consideration.
