A quiet, friendly and welcoming...

Jun 2008, Miss G Apps

A quiet, friendly and welcoming resort. Apartments quaint and kept lovely and clean with a maid that visits every day. The setting is great, the pool area is clean, well maintained and has a good bar service. The breakfast a little basic but this is the only downfall.
5 minutes walk to a very long, uncrowded beach and a little further to the restaurants, some of which offer free sunbeds on the beach. Half an hour walk along the beach front into Perissa village, the road has no paths so beware of the cars and bikes!
From Perissa take the water taxi around the 'rock' to Kamari which again has a lovely long beach, restaurants and a great shopping area.
The island is beautiful so well worth exploring. The capital Thira is a must to visit with fantastic views looking north and south of the island. The views from Nea Kameni (the volcano) are wonderful, as is the sunset in Ia, just watch out for the Donkeys going up and down the steps in Ia!!!

We booked a late deal with Thomson on a B&B package.
After being bombarded with the sale of everything on the flight, we arrived on the peaceful island of Santorini.
The accommodation is good. It is spotless (new soap and towels daily), pleasantly presented and cleaned to perfection by the maid every day. The staff are helpful and smiley.
A short walk to the beach but a 15min walk to eateries. Talking of which... Breakfast.
This was another story...wafer thin 'pink' meat and cheese, dry bread, musty cake and orange cordial. Unbelievable for an island with cheap local bakeries (Santa Irina bakery in Perissa is great)
Whilst discussing food I have to mention that most other holidaymakers were buying their own after a few days of being constantly ripped off on the taverna 'strip' of Perissa. What has happened?
Why do taverna owners think that British tourists will pay through the nose AND be happy with second rate kebab shop style food whilst on holiday?
I am not a seasoned gourmand but do have standards and certainly do not wish to pay above London prices (The capital Thira is out of this world...almost four pounds for a coffee) for cheap rate food.
We have spent many years living and working abroad and recognise that local economies must thrive but if you compare the hard sell approach of the local tavernas to places such as Southern Turkish resorts, you realise how the local owners must almost resent tourists to be providing such poor service.
Likewise the Evil Wink (Thomsons) and its ever-increasing monopoly and destruction of quiet, rustic areas. Two friends of ours at the hotel attended the 'welcome meeting' (something we long ago boycotted due to the worsening hard sell approach) in another part of Perissa.
Afterwards, they asked if the same evil wink bus that had brought them to the meeting might take them back to the hotel, as the wife was waiting for a hip replacement and would find the walk most painful. The wink refused.
Enough said, we could go on for hours but just let us finish with this thought.
If you want to visit York would you:
a - Visit a local tour operator with fixed-timings/ transport who will try and bully you into buying everything from timeshare to ice cream
b - Go under your own steam at a fraction of the cost and with no hassle
Therefore, why do people keep signing up to the tours to Thira? Baffling. The island is small...we walked most of it in 3 days.
You will need plenty of books for this holiday...
