The Miramare has amazing views over the Gulf of Naples, however it is on an extremely busy, noisy road which you have to walk down to get into the centre of Sorrento. You really need your wits about you at all times.
Watch out for the moped riders. Make sure you request a sea view or balcony as you will probably not get one otherwise. We only asked for a balcony and were given a room at the back overlooking the car park and noisy road. The balcony was quite private though compared to others that we saw. You really do not escape the road noise anywhere at the Miramare whether you are in your room or sunbathing/swimming etc. You do get used to it, however we were quite disappointed that this was not mentioned to us by our booking agent. The room we had was very basic and not that clean. The floors needed to be swept and the kitchen space was quite grubby. The snack bar only had a very limited menu and the only item on the menu they seemed to be able to supply was ham and cheese toasties.
You have to pre-order anything else the day before! All of the staff we encountered were very nice and you really are left to your own devices and never bothered which is nice. The Chamber maids tended to be very noisy chatting in the corridors early in the mornings which did start to annoy after a while. The best thing about the Miramare are the wonderful views. The restaurant opposite the Miramare "La tonnarella" was fantastic, with in my opinion the best view of Sorrento. Great food and service! We went back 3 times. Oh, a place to avoid is the "Holiday Inn restaurant" down by the marina. We didn't notice the name of the restaurant until we had sat down and ordered, if we had we would have walked past.
This restaurant was extremely busy and looked very inviting, the food though has to be the worst I have ever seen and tasted in my life. Awful, awful, awful. If you are planning on going to Sorrento my advice would be to just do some extra investigations into your accommodation. Sorrento is a fantastic place and we enjoyed it so much despite the few little niggles.

We arrived lateish and had our luggage carried to our room. However in the morning we discovered we had no balcony or terrace (as requested). Not possible to get a change of room as it was fully booked. It was noisy as the room was next to the car park and access was via a rather faulty back door.
My advice is if you are allocate room 102- refuse it! Who wants to look into a car park for the period of the holiday.
However the staff are lovely- very helpful and very polite- a nice change from some of the places I have been to. Breakfast is continental- croissants, fruit juice, cereal and wonderful coffee and of course ham and cheese. Cost 7 Euro. Dining area is very smart or you can eat on the terrace and have fabulous views over the bay.
Crossing the road is a bit exciting!! However found the drivers to be quite polite on the whole.
Do the train ride around Sorrento, its great. You get headset to plug into your own language and is enjoyable. If the theatre is showing the Songs of Sorrento I would recommend this- drinks on the terrace and a great night of entertainment.
If you plan to go to Rome, dont do it in a day, its too much. Take an overnight stay.
We also did the Amalfi drive which was lovely. The driver was great- hairpin bends taken at a nice pace- notthing scarey. Avoid taking a taxi if you can as its very expensive. Try and sort out the bus sevice if you can! A bit of a nightmare really but buy your ticket from the cafe in the town centre, its valid for an hour and costs one euro. Buy as many as you think you will need.
Eating out is expensive. The Red Lion Pizza restuarant is good value for money. The restaurant next to the Theatre Tazzo is very good but a bit pricey but we did have a lovely meal there.
Views of Sorrento are fabulous whenever you are near ther coast- which is most of the time.
Enjoy Sorrento.
