I liked this hotel we arrived the luggage took a long time to arrive but after 90 mins on the coach with a lovely guide that explained everything we saw on the was she was excellent we don't normally travel by coach when we go on holiday. The hotel when we arrived was clean and tidy check in was easy and very quick. We was disappointed to find that the beach was a long way away it cost 3.50 euros in the lift each then 6.50 each for a sun bed then another 6.50 for a beach umbrella also the bar on the beach was expensive. The food in the hotel we found was excellent the breakfast was typical of a european country the evening meal there was a choice of three starters and three main courses and three for desert cake or ice cream or fresh fruit, the wine was only 8 euros so no complaits there. We had lunch in the hotel three times but only found the bar next door which was cheaper and the service was also great there. After reading the reviews on this hotel we found it to be a very good quality hotel worthy of its 3 stars. The towels when we first saw them thought are these table cloths or what but they did dry you very well. The air con never worked but that was 6 euros a day extra which we should have been told about. But we had a great holiday in the metrople and never found the road outside a problem if you was careful. The bus is cheaper enough if you don't want to walk.

I stayed at this hotel, and I must say, that Thomas Cook has got it down as a 3 Star Hotel, but I think it should be raised to at least a 4 star! In fact, I would give it a 5 star!

Nice comfortable hotel, nice family run hotel, always willing to help. Excellent maid service with fresh bed linen and towels regularly.
Quite a way from the centre which can be annoying sometimes and taxis aren’t cheap. But it’s a great base to explore the local amenities and venture off.
We hired a car which was very useful if you can handle the drivers. It’s quite a noisy spot at times as it’s by the main road, but this wasn’t really a problem. I'd recommend it.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The views from the terraced across the Bay of Naples area breath taking.
The breakfasts are a joke; stale cheese and ham or tinned fruit, however the evening meal was not too bad, try eating out, some excellent food in town. Getting to town can be a very interesting experience as there are no footpaths for a couple of hundred yards, take the bus if you have young kids. Italian drivers are nutters every last one of them, we did not see a car that was not damaged.
Now how do I describe the room? Room 99 to be precise. I did not see any of the other rooms, but room 99 was a very scary place to be. You could not swing a mouse let alone a cat. There was no balcony, only double doors leading into a shared area, which was bordered by 20ft high wall with a forest beyond, the sun had never penetrated this area. The walls were moldy and dirty and being in the room for more than 10 minutes caused severe depression, thank goodness our room was just opposite the bar, how convenient. Let me tell you about the bath towels or better described as tea towels! I have this vision of staff in the kitchen drying the crockery with huge terry towels meant for the guests.

We stayed at the Metropole for a week, from the end of September to early October. Touched down in Naples and then had 90 minute coach ride to hotel in Sorrento, it was dark when we arrived, but it was a very nice journey. Check in was quick, we were given room 310, top floor, far corner, but we found in the morning that we had stunning views of the sea and directly opposite Mt. Vesuvius, very pleasant! The hotel was clean and tidy, and very peaceful too. Terrace and pool areas included sun loungers, chairs, tables etc. All very tidy and clean. These same areas also were something of a suntrap throughout the whole day, as long as you have the weather!
The meals were average all week, breakfast was typical European choices: - cheese, ham, hard bread, yoghurts, cereal with warm milk etc. For lunch, you either had to eat at the snack bar, available 12pm-2pm, reasonable food and prices, or go down to the town and eat there (not a bad option), and then evening meal was regularly hit and miss (more misses than hits I'm afraid). My girlfriend probably only ate 50% of the evening meals throughout the week, and she loves her food. A mixture of pasta/tomato/garlic/soup for starters and then for main course meats, more pasta, more tomatoes, chicken curry, sautéed veg and potatoes in various forms. I would recommend going down into the town and having dinner there on more than one occasion if you happen to stay a week, the food there was excellent throughout, especially the pizzas!
All in all, and the food apart, the hotel was above average. Staff were very attentive and polite, and as I have mentioned before the hotel was clean, tidy and peaceful. The road outside was busy however and quite dangerous at times to walk down. Beware the Italian drivers, they think they are the only ones on the road and will drive almost anywhere to keep moving-you have been warned!
Sorrento as a town is very nice and well worth spending a couple of days down there walking around the streets and down the busy shopping alleys, something for everyone there and the views of the coastline are stunning, many photo opportunities. Tours are available if that is what you want, but an unguided amble around will be just as informative and you can go at your own pace too.

A great drive from Naples along the Gulf. A good tour of Sorrento town with other drop offs. Hotel from the outside looks very promising, nice terrace outside restaurant, bar terrace and good pool area (unfortunately closes @ 6pm) so doesn't give much time when arrival is at five to get refreshed after journey.
Once in the nice lobby with a fairly warm greeting we were given the key to room 300, careful here no number on the door but first on left out of lift. Entered very clean room, light and spacious, good bathroom with small shower. Being a big lad this shower was a tight fit but with some shower gel I squeezed in.
Out onto the terrace/balcony NOW THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD TRY TO GET THIS ROOM. The balcony was large with fantastic views over the bay of Naples & Vesuvius (sorry if it is spelt wrong).
Great room, great view, and air conditioned. Or so we thought could not get it to work. No problem nip down to lobby after rushed swim and find out how to work it. Aha! YOU MUST PAY FOR IT. 6.00 EUROS A DAY AND IT ONLY WORKS BETWEEN 6-8AM AND 8PM TILL MIDNIGHT. Hot and sweaty after the walk back from Sorrento, this you do not need. Come on tour operators tell us the truth (advert said air conditioning).
On to meals very hungry on arrival. Went for meal when restaurant was open given table to share with another couple no problem. Did not realise that this is allocated table for whole week. Food was shaky on this first night and a bit institutional. Terrace outside restaurant appears to be only for show as is never used.
Breakfast on the whole a joke. Toast, rolls, processed cheese, watery ham, tinned fruit, knackered fresh fruit, yogurt, cheap cereal etc. When you consider all the fresh produce in the area, traditional meats & cheeses what a disappointment. COME ON Hotel Metropole this is your fault and not the fault of the tour operator.
Did not eat in again in the evening only ever two choices on the menu and I love my food so need a bit more variety. One choice was traditional and the other leant towards scary cat British food i.e. hospital style.
There are some great restaurants in and around Sorrento find them and try them. Don't miss out.
Quiet simply this hotel could be excellent but it lacks passion and Italian flair. Could try harder.

Just returned from a week in Sorrento, staying at Hotel Metropole. We arrived at Naples airport and got our bags straight away, it took about 1 hour and a half to get to our hotel, that included just one drop at another hotel. We arrived and were greeted by friendly staff, we were told dinner would be served in the restaurant, which we were pleased about as it was about 9pm, we didn't think we'd be able to get any dinner.
The hotel was nice enough, the food in my opinion was excellent, we enjoyed all meals. The breakfast wasn't great though. The drinks were reasonably priced, a bottle of wine was 10euro and bottle of beer 2euro. The one bad thing is that, they do not take any cards apart from MasterCard. We ended up having to take money out of the machine to pay our bar bill at the end of the week.
Sorrento itself is very picturesque, marina grande is worth a visit, makes you feel like your in the real Italy, there is a little beach there as well.
We went to Capri and stayed over night, which was beautiful, it was easier enough to get the ferry over and the hydrofoil back, we didn't go on any excursions as most things you can do yourself and not feel like you on a school trip.
I do have to comment that the hotel is on a main road and there is no pavement outside so you have to be careful. We didn't find it a problem as the bus stop is more or less outside and the buses are regular. We did walk down to Sorrento as it only took 15-20mins if we missed the bus. Because of the main road, you can hear the traffic and beeping horns but we didn't find this a problem at all, and our room was at the front of the hotel.

My husband and I have just returned from a week’s holiday at the Hotel Metropole, Sorrento. This was our first visit to Italy and we we thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely return.
The Hotel was good and very clean. The food was OK (not fantastic, but certainly OK and got better as the week progressed). We had a front room with a sea view, which was a really good size and was well furnished. It was noisy because of the busy main road outside but we did get used to it, although the bin men at 4am each morning were a bit of a pain! The walk into town is a bit hairy to start with as there are no pavements for about 150 metres and Italian drivers seem to be very close. This hotel is not suitable for small children as the road is a real death trap.
We went on some lovely trips to Rome, Amalfi coast, Isle of Capri and Pompeii. We took the train to Pompeii and this worked out very well.
All in all we had a really good holiday and would definitely return to Sorrento.

We stayed at the Hotel Metropole at the beginning of August 2008 for our Honeymoon. We really enjoyed our stay at the Metropole, the staff were very helpful and attentive. The room was spotless and the views from our balcony were stunning (See photos attached.
Breakfast was typical of an Italian hotel. Evening meals were fantastic, 3 courses and a choice for each course. I am quite a fussy eater and did not like the food on all of the evenings, the hotel had no problems with providing me with something else that I could eat. Fantastic good quality food. House wine was 8 Euros a bottle and a bottle of Nastro Azzuro Beer 2.50
When visiting places like Pompeii, Capri etc.. It is easy enough to find your own way around rather than paying for the tour operator excursions. For example, a trip to Pompeii with our tour operator would have cost 35 euros each (not including the 11 euros entrance fee). We found our way to Sorrento train station and paid 3.80 for the train to Pompeii (it stops outside the entrance to the excavations) and 6 euros for an audio guide. Totel for 2: 35.60 compared to 92 Euros through the tour operator.
