Hotel is small and it works. The staff work well, give chat they appreciate it, makes you holiday better too. Pool is standard for the size of hotel & very often you can have it to yourself. If you wish to go to the lake its just a couple of minutes away. Bardilino is a... more

We had our wedding reception at the end of May 2007 at the Tramontano and it was absolutely superb. The location was breathtaking, to start we had drinks (prosecco) on the balcony and in the lounge overlooking the bay of Naples followed by the wedding breakfast in the... more

This was our fifth visit to Sorrento and it won't be our last. It was however our first and last visit to the Tamontano. What a letdown! We booked the Tramontano as part of our 25th Anniversary treat, as we wanted a quality hotel in a quiet part of town, but handily placed... more

I agree with other reviews that the hotel is superbly situated and that the staff are excellent. However we also had a problem with our room. We had paid extra for a sea view but were given a small dark attic room with a very low ceiling which did not meet our expectations.... more

We were so impressed with Tramontano that we've postponed our Scottish wedding so we can have it next year at Tramontano instead. The staff couldn't have been more friendly yet totally professional at the same time. The accommodation is opulent but not overbearing, the... more

My Girlfriend and I stayed at the Tramontano for one week in early May 2005. Most reviews of the Tramontano are good but one or two are bad. Now I know why. The main plus point of the hotel is the view out into the bay. Which is stunning! However if you get a room facing... more

Beautiful Hotel!
We stayed for 3 nights this November at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano and it was a fantastic experience! Our room was huge - bigger than any room I've had in the US let alone Europe - and we had a small balcony facing the ocean with Mt. Vesuvius right across the bay. The hotel has a nice pool although we did not get to enjoy it during this time of year. Sorrento is such a small town which made the location of the hotel convienent - about a 10 minute walk to the center of town and a 15 minute walk to the train. My only complaint is that the hotel does not have internet service as our hotel in Florence did. This was not a big deal since there are two internet cafes in town but it would have been more convienent to have this in our hotel. This hotel is quite pricey during peak season which is May - October but in the offseason, which is when we visited, it's half the price which makes it totally worth it! I would definetly return if travelling again at this time of year.
Taking dinner with the Dowager Duchess
Location is everything in Sorrento. The location of the Tramontano, right at the bottom of the 'drains', makes it ideal for going into town at any time, and handy for buses and trains too. At the same time it is quiet and not disturbed by the noise of the town. Our stay at the Tramontano was wonderful. We had a spacious room on the 4th floor with a balcony, overlooking the pool. The room was bright and clean, as was the rest of the hotel. The public rooms are remarkable, especially the terrace and bar, and the view over the bay is magnificent. The only negative comment I have about the room is that the walls are very thin and the lack of carpets means you can easily hear your neighbours. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that seems out of place is the standard of the food. While it is generally tasty and well cooked, it does not match the opulent surroundings. It is typical holiday hotel food. We ate in the hotel on about 2/3 of the evenings and I never had anything I didn't like and never left feeling hungry - so it isn't bad. The service is 'brisk', which some people may not appreciate and does take some getting used to, but that is just their way. I think my husband hit the nail on the head when he likened it to going to dinner with a Dowger Duchess. The location is grand and she wants to entertain in the grand style to which she is accustomed, but unfortunately the budget doesn't run to it anymore. You are treated as honoured guests, but the caviar has been replaced with cabbage. There are several restaurants in town which offer a tasty and cheap alternative if you wish. Our policy for excursions was only to book those which we could not easily do on our own, and it seemed to work well. The Circumvesuviana railway is reliable and we used it many times to get to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius etc. You can easily do these trips on your own, for a fraction of the price, without needing to speak Italian. You have the advantage of being able to decide when to go, eg depending upon the weather, and how long to stay. We would definitely return to Sorrento, and definitely return to the Tramontano. You can't give a better recommendation than that.
Still the same wonderful hotel
Well, I haven't been to The Tramaontano since the early 70's and it's good to see that the hotel and it's standards haven't changed. We didn't have a car but it didn't stop us seeing all those wonderful sights Amalfi, Capri, Ischia and to me the most interesting of places Pompeii and Heraklion. We also took a ride up to the crater of Vesuvius. When we weren't out seeing the sights it was nice to laze on one the piers that one could reach from the hotel via a tunnel leading down to them, I don't know whether this still exists. The restaurant and its service was wonderful even then, nothing was too much trouble, and I can remember the rooms were elegant, marble staircases and very clean. The staff were excellent too. In all, we returned there 3 times, and I would still love to return there even now. Probably one day I will, when my husband gets over the fear of flying!!
location, location, location!
We had a gorgeous room with a huge balcony - could leave the doors open all night for a delicious breeze. Very clean and quiet. The location was absolutely perfect we could walk to everything. The staff is not that service oriented but I would still recomend this hotel.
Honeymoon Heaven
We stayed here for a week on our honeymoon and it was absolute heaven. We had a huge suite with a balcony overlooking the sea. The location is wonderful, right in the centre of the town. The staff were very professional, helpful and friendly. The breakfast was excellent and the cleaning service was outstanding. Will definitely come back to this hotel.
An Hotel in the Grand Style
An hotel in the Grand Style, Byron and Shelley stayed here. Excellent location, 4/5 mins flat stroll into the centre of Sorrento. It is on the cliffs rising straight out of the sea. Sea view rooms are great, only the waves for noise and views of Vesuvius across the bay, watch ferries and cruise ships come and go. Well decorated throughout the hotel, rooms are well appointed, though they vary in size. Service in the hotel cannot be faulted Dinner is waiter service and the service is excellent. Most days you can get a table with views across the bay. The meals whilst acceptable do not have the quality and variation that I would expect from the very best four star hotels. The hotel is in one of the best locations in Sorrento. Many hotels provide shuttle buses out of necessity, people we spoke to found them a niusance. From this hotel you stroll into and out of town whenever you want
Great Hotel, Perfect Location
We stayed at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano in May 2004 and were very pleased with our room (they upgraded us to a wonderful suite overlooking the bay of Naples), the hotel service and the breakfasts were all quite good. We did not eat dinner there as there are so many other fabulous restaurants within a short walk from the Hotel. I have stayed in other Sorrento hotels in the past and this by far has been my favorite. The large balconys, wonderful views, and great location all added to a great experience.
US perspective
We stayed at the Tramontano at the end of August 2004 for four nights. We found the accommodations to be adequate, but small, and not what we expected for the price. Obviously you pay for the view and location which were spectacular. The bar staff were superb, and we enjoyed the small deck outside to have a drink. The front desk staff were cordial and helpful, but found that they steered us to very Americanized restaurants for dinner, when what we asked for was the best restaurant in town. We agree with the comments on breakfast made by the writer from England. We were disappointed with the buffet selections. The eggs were cold. The fruit was not fresh. When we tried to order something from a menu, we were told that the kitchen was closed at 8 AM. We did not eat anything else aside from breakfast at the hotel (noting the high cost for dinner). If we visit that area of Italy again, we would try the Excelsior or another hotel along the water.
Fabulous!!
Over the years we have been on many holidays, never returning to the same place twice, that is with the exception of the the Tramontano. Both times we went, although our rooms were not massive, the quality of the furniture, fittings and linen was first class. We found the hotel staff to be extremely helpful and the food to be excellent. The waiters took pride in their jobs and its was wonderful to be treated so well. The Maitre'd was very entertaining and ensured that the restaurant was run with precision. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Tramontano and I know we will return there again.
My favourite hotel :)
I have stayed at the Imperial Tramontano twice in previous years. Both of my stays have been extremely enjoyable!! The staff were always very friendly and were always able to help when we had a query about the area. The rooms, on both occasions were well kept and comfortable. The air conditioning was really good to come back to after a day out in the sun! The views from the balcony over the bay of Naples were spectacular. (I was lucky enough to have a balcony on both occasions, i realise this may not always be the case) The swimming pool, is in a lovely setting and close to the bar for drinks and ice creams. As well as the swimming pool, there is the hotel lift which takes you down to the beach. Here, you can swim in an enclosed section of the sea. This makes a very nice change. The evening meal, was always delicious, and, was 3 course, so you wont be left wanting more. Drinks are extra. On my second visit, 2003, we felt the food had improved. Overall, my stays have been excellent, and i would recommend the Imperial Tramontano to anyone.
