View to die for, hot water needs work
from Hydrokitty
This was a wonderful hotel with a dynamite view from our private balcony. A few things need some attention: the jacuzzi should be heated in March! Also consistent problems with the water. Very low pressure in the morning with a tendency to run out of hot water and then run out of all water! All those things considered, I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat. The people were delightful, the food was delicious and the view was one of a kind!
Wow! Had the best time!
from Always honest!
I stayed here with my boyfriend in September to celebrate my 21st birthday. We honestly had the best time! It might not be geared towards our age group but we didn't feel out of place and were made to feel welcome at all times. Initially I had booked a standard room but upgraded as soon as I saw it, you simply can't go all that way and miss out on a balcony to enjoy the most amazing views. I would really recommend uprading your room. I read the reviews on here which recommended that before I left, but simply didn't realise quite how breathtaking it is. The restaurant was absolutely lovely and only on one occasion were we sent away to the bar to get a drink while we waited for a table to become available. The location is right at the top of a (particularly dangerous) hill, so I wouldn't harbour eny expectations of a stroll down into Sorrento! However, the bus service was reliable and relatively frequent. In terms of night life, we went on so many trips and did so much exploring that we rarely made it past eleven pm! I would recommend this hotel to anyone without hesitation. Send my regards to Nino!!!
Views to die for.....

We visited the Grand Hotel Vesuvio in August last year with our two teenage daughters. I was worried because in case the girls got bored as it was clearly not a hotel that placed its focus on attracting children/young people. However, I need not have worried as we all had an absolutely brilliant time, with all our needs being met. The most outstanding aspect of this hotel was the breathtaking range of views it provided. The hotel is situated a little way up the mountainside overlooking Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples and the view from the dining room was quite stunning. The friendliness of the waiters and staff in general was quite remarkable, in fact I would say that their constant kindness and attentiveness was sufficient to make us want to return to the hotel this year. However, like others that have submitted reviews, I agree that the breakfasts were pretty awful and the food in general qustionable. Sorrento itself came alive at night with street artists and busy bars and shops making it the place to be for people of all ages. Advice - don't go on any of the organised trips - they are ridiculously expensive. Plan them yourself and use public transport - you'll save a fortune. If you go to Capri, go as early as you can in the day and return before lunch - the island becomes unbearably hot and crowded throughout the day.
Great hotel except for food

We had a week here with Jules Verne from October 16th. The weather was gorgeous, and we found it a pleasant hotel with super views, and helpful staff. We did make a mistake, though in choosing half board. For a four star hotel, we found the food very ordinary indeed. The breakfasts also, were hardly suitable for such a grand hotel - only tinned fruit, no yoghurt - and for those who like a cooked breakfast (thankfully not us), there was only scrambled egg!!

We had a excellent week here although the weather was variable. We enjoyed our bedroom with the seaview balcony but note that the size and arrangement of these rooms appears to be a bit of a lottery. The only comment that I would add to previous reports is that the pick-up point in town for the hotel courtesy bus is not that shown on the little hotel map they give you and they don't tell you it's been moved. It is several hundred metres away and annoyed several people when we were there. If you are going to Positano on the local bus, note that it does get overcrowded and you may well not get on the bus you expected there or back.
A good base

My wife and I travelled with Voyages Jules Verne on a package w/c Oct 2nd. We found the Vesuvio a great place to relax after busy days touring the Amalfi coast, Capri, etc. Our room with balcony (extra, but essential) was excellent (no 321), as was the marble bathroom, both cleaned very well daily. Breakfast on our balcony was only 3 Euro each extra - and what a view looking over the Bay of Naples! All the Hotel staff were very friendly - but the hotel is impersonal due to the large coach loads that arrive from all over the world and the swimming pool is only good for sunning oneself, the water is unheated and freezing. Bar prices were reasonable, but the frequent free bus hotel service downtown was excellent - and if you miss it - taxis approx 15 Euro - cheap with 4 on board. Eating downtown is wonderful - a choice of over 50 restaurants serving extensive varieties of local fish, pasta and meat dishes. We will go back in 2005, and use the Grand Hotel vesuvio as our 'bolt hole'.
great service

Having read all of the previous comments regarding this hotel, I find the following things true; Staff great, waiters especially, Dinner choice good food excellent, wine choice excellent and knowledgable maitre,ds. Breakfast bland, lack of choice, it is either cereal or continental breakfast. Rooms spotless and comfortable, although no sound insulation from other rooms so you need to get on with your neighbours. There are no tea and coffee facilities in your room. The satellite Tv choice is either Word Service or CNN or local telly, needs more variation. Bar prices expensive, i.e 4 euros for a beer, if they lowered them people would drink more. Location good but not for those who are not fully mobile as on the hill a 15 minurte walk outside of the centre, although free bus service. Do not do the organised tours unless you are infirm or not good on your pins. The public transport is cheap and reliable and you get to see more. i.e. trip to pompei on public transport was 3.60 euros against 30 euros each through thomsons, although they do take you door to door, whilst we got the free bus to the train station. Swimming pool cold, although fine once your in. Sorrento itself is ok but it is the scenery that really makes it outstanding.
good hotel but big and anonymus
from A TripAdvisor Member
I was in sorrento a week ago. The hotel is very nice, quiet and clean. Rooms are really big (is worth to have sea view). The atmosphere is nice but nothing special. The hotel is very big and you feel a little lost there. Breakfest is just ok. ( very small choice).
great hotel for the tour bus crowd
from grbobby
I stayed at this hotel for two nights in September and for the most part had a wonderful stay. The room was very comfortable and the staff willing to help with any problems you might have. The hotel is located off the beaten path from the town center and the walk down can be very dangereous as the road gets very narrow and there is no sidewalk part of the way. It is a lovely walk but might be quite difficult if you don't like hills. The free shuttle should run more frequently in my opinion as this is a large hotel with many guests. On one of my trips back to the hotel at 10:30pm, the bus was overloaded and would not take all the people, so had to leave them there stranded until the bus was able to come back. This is unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber. The food at the breakfast buffet was very basic and they could do a lot to improve on this. I believe they cater to the tour bus groups as I observed many busses coming and going during my vist. I would stay at this hotel again but would like to see the improvements to the shuttle service and breakfast.
Fabulous

This hotel is really beautiful. The views from the hotel are stunning if you are lucky enough to get a room with a sea view. The walk into Sorrento itself is about 2 kilometers and takes around 20-25 minutes, there is pavement for approximately half the way back to the hotel and then you have to walk on the side of the road which has hair bends so you have to be very careful of approaching traffic. There is however a courtesy bus that runs regulary to and fro' town. The hotel food was excellent and we found the service from the waiters, exceptional. We also found the standard of cleanliness in the hotel very good. The swimming pool was a very good size and all in all had plenty available sunbeds both by the pool and on the sun terrace on the roof. I would definitley go back to this hotel and would recommend it to others.
We found this Hotel to be of an exceptionally high standard. It was beautifully appointed, and immaculately clean. The situation was ideal, and the views from the Hotel stunning. The Hotel 'bus was a great advantage as well. The food was of a high standard and the Sunday... more
