Grand Hotel De La Ville

We may have just been unlucky with this hotel based on other reviews but our experience was not good. I booked on the basis of all of the reviews I'd read and booked 3 months in advance directly with the hotel. I'd written to them requesting a nice double room as we were celebrating our anniversary and it was our first time visiting the area so a sea view would be great if possible. Instead we were given a tiny tiny twin bedded room on the bottom floor with the terrace and people sitting directly outside the bedroom window - couldn't open the curtains or window as no privacy and certainly no view or romance. We went down to see if we'd been given the wrong room or whether there was something else to change to and the guy on the desk was extremely rude and said that's all they have and basically we'd have to lump it. We asked for our passports back so we could try somewhere else and they refused. Could not believe it. By now it was getting quite late (around 6pm) but we still walked around to their sister hotel Ambasciattori - they had availability and gave us a fantastic room (see review) at a reduced rate and sorted out the passports, luggage transfer and cancellation of the other hotel for us. We stayed in the hotel about 10 mins in total and would by far recommend their sister hotel which is directly on the cliff.

We had looked at trip advisor prior to booking our stay and were delighted to read the positive reviews. We were not disappointed by the reality of Enzo, the maitre d' .....We were also delighted by the room that we asked to stay in, due to good advice from trip advisor reports. We had a room on the fifth floor with a wonderful view from the roof terrace from Capri on the left, across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius and Naples on the right . We were staying during the Feast of the Assumption and there were fireworks in the Bay. Wonderful! The hotel was being refurbished and they had not yet reached the fifth floor, when they have no doubt the facilities wil be improved, but the view made up for any shortcomings. We understand that not all hotels in Sorrento are as welcoming and helpful as this hotel was, but do not get pressurised into organised tours. make your own way to Pompeii and Herculaneum on the train, the Circumvesuviano. Try not to miss the Greek temples at Paestum, you can get there by train from Pompeii station very easily. Use the tourist office in town, they are very helpful. I've stayed at a loads of hotels all over the world and all over the price range. For the money, Hotel de la Ville is excellent value and the staff are wonderful. They turn it from a good hotel into a great hotel - I can't recommend it enough.

Fabulous hotel with friendly staff and excellent location. Our 1st visit to Italy and our Honeymoon. The hotel was womderful and more like a 5* not 4*. The food is out of this world with a choice of 7 starters, 7 main courses and 5 deserts which made us not want to go out for food elsewhere!!! Enzo and the staff in the dining room made our holiday, they were so friendly and professional. Gino and the other bar staff were also just as friendly and professional. Would definately return to this hotel due to it's location, value for money and 1st class service. The downside was drinks being a little expensive but there is a friendly bar around the corner called "ciao" with lovely food and cheaper beers!!!

We have just returned from two weeks at the Hotel de la ville, we also got married out there. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel it was absolutely perfect and I have never felt compelled to write about any hotel or holiday before! Food, staff, location, rooms excellent excellent, recommend to anyone hundred times over.

This is a lovely hotel and an ideal base for a holiday. It is clean, the staff are friendly and it situated very conveniently. However, i have noticed that others on this board have complained about noise. The noise isn't just outside! We were woken up every single morning by the occupants above moving their furniture around and woken in the night by a baby crying from the one of the other rooms. Needless to say - sound proofing awful and i did not find this acceptable for a 4 star hotel. We asked to change rooms, but we were told that wasn't possible because the place was fully booked. The food at this hotel is truely fantastic and it's an absolute pleasure to spend time in the bar/garden/pool. But the hotel does lack facilities, so you have no choice but to go elsewhere to seek amusement. The 'beach' is some rocks dumped in the sea. The 'musical entertainment' actually consists of a couple of local misfits playing YMCA on a karaoke machine - mildly entertaining (for all the wrong reasons) but not the 'piano bar' i had in mind.

We have stayed at the De la Ville on many occasions and it just gets better every time. The rooms are spotlessly clean with marble tiled floors and stylish furniture. Rooms at the front have a superb view over the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. You get the same fabulous view from the rooftop terrace which also has a bar and refreshing hydromassage pool. The staff cannot be faulted for their friendliness and helpfulness and you are truly welcomed as a family friend on a return visit! The restaurant is full of atmosphere and the food is wonderful, both in choice and quality. We would not consider any other hotel in Sorrento when visiting.

A lovely hotel with large bedrooms and bathrooms to match. Beakfast one of the best of our whole two weeks in Italy. Check carefully on use of facilities at nearby sister hotel The Royal - as it is only use of beach NOT pool!

Stayed at the Hotel De La Ville for 3 nights in June - For the money you can't beat it - great location, great food and a wonderful staff. Having two swimming pools is a great feature, plus you can use the beach at the sister hotel (Beach is really a platform) - I would not hesitate to stay there again - Had a seaview room - only negative is that the room is right over the street so it can be a little noisy, but the view makes it worth it
