Pestana Hotel

The view and location makes it worthwhile. We booked a suite. The room was large with great views. Quite honestly though, the hotel is due for a renovation. Kind of a dump. Staff was indifferent. Skip the free breakfast and don't even think about room service.

The Pestana Porto is the best-located hotel in Porto. It is right on the Ribiera on the banks of the Douro River and looks directly upon the Port houses across the river. I stumbled upon this place last year while on business in Porto. I vowed that if I returned, I would stay there. The hotel is part of a group of buildings classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The hotel is excellently located in the historic centre of Porto, walking distance across the bridge to the Port Cellars. I would recommend staying here if your time in Porto is limited. Rooms are individual and I would strongly recommend a river view as it is the classical view of Porto, particularly at night. Most other Porto hotels seem to be outside the central area and so less convenient for seeing the key sights. Located next to the river and close to bars and the port houses across the bridge. Our room (502) was a nice size with river views. breakfast was good with a selection of hot and cold food. Overall the hotel was well decorated and very comfortable. Unfortunatly the weather was terrible whilst we were there and the river burst it's banks flooding the hotel - about 3FT deep in the bar! We spent one night at Pestana Porto, and it was a very nice stay. We were met at check-in by a bow-tied waiter, offering us a glass of excellent Port wine. The elevator was spacious, and the porter service prompt. The room was spacious enough for us, but was on the smaller size. The bathroom was well appointed and roomy. We stayed here for three nights on a recent fabulous trip to Porto. The location is superb; we took a cab from the airport and only occasionally needed a cab to get somewhere. It's location on the river is charming and the views are great. We found the rooms very large, and the beds comfortable. The marble bathroom was also large, and really suited our needs well. Beautiful historic hotel in a great location. The rooms are spacious, very well decorated, romantic with fantastic views (our room had river and city view). Breakfast is good but not fantastic. It could certainly be a 5 star hotel.

Stayed for 1 night at the end of a week's holiday in Northern Portugal. As per previous reviews, this hotel is in a superb location on the banks of the Douro, with beautiful views over the Port Lodges on the other side. The streets around are full of cafe's and restaurants. However, we felt that the hotel itself was quite average for its price range. We paid extra for a river view (worth doing - there's not much else to recommend the rooms), but our room was very small, with very average facilities. ie no Tea/Coffee in room, bottle... more

Stayed at this hotel on a weekend trip to Porto from London and it exceeded all of our expectations from the glowing reviews on this website. The location is simply unbeatable and the rooms are spacious and bright with a balcony overlooking the river. Will definitely come back.

This hotel is right on the Douro in downtown Porto, across from the wine lodges on the othe bank, occupying several renovated buildings. We had a lovely room looking out on the river from 2 large windows. The staff was helpful and the breakfasts (in a large room with great river views) were ample. Be aware that Porto (like Lisbon) is very hilly -and this hotel is at the bottom of some very steep streets. However, it's a short walk along the river to a bridge that takes you to the wine (port) lodges on the other side.
