The room was pleasant but quite small for a double. They turned the air conditioning off three days into our two week stay which was uncomfortable to say the least. We were in a front room overlooking the road. We had double doors but no balcony to speak of. At night, it... more

getting heated
My wife and I stopped at Capri Hotel in Sorrento in late September 2005 and whilst we found the facilities acceptable the fact that the air conditioning was switched off meant that night time temperatures in our room were 25c and because our room was on the main road side, leaving the windows open resulted in little sleep because of traffic noise. I offered to purchase a fan and leave it with the hotel at the end of our stay, but the hotel refused this offer. Be warned!
Has the feel of a tour package hotel
My family was booked into the Hotel Capri in April after the hotel we planned on staying in was delayed opening due to remodeling. On the positive side, the location of the Capri is ideal. It is very close to the train station and to the shopping area. The hotel looks quite nice at a quick glance but we soon discovered that this seems to be a bit of a facade and it on closer inspection it is a bit rough around the edges. Our room was on the first floor and the window opened onto the main street. The traffic noise was quite loud. The fan/cooling system in our room was not working (when I asked about it at the desk the woman just said with a smile, "no it isn't working!") so we had to either sleep in a stuffy room with the window closed or listen to road traffic. The room itself was reasonable in size. The beds were fairly comfortable. The sheet on my daughter's bed had a huge hole in it and even though we left it prominently displayed for the maid to see, it was never changed. Lastly, I actually had to pay 10 euros to use the safe in my hotel room! The breakfast was horrible! Reminded us of hotels in the former eastern block countries in Eurpoe. In fact we only took breakfast there 2 of the 4 mornings we stayed there. The meat and cheese was of poor quality, the bread was basic white sliced bread and the croissants and rolls were not particularly fresh. The coffee was the worst! It was gray and tasteless, no doubt powdered instant coffee, not brewed. How a hotel in Italy can get away with bad coffee, I have no idea. It was basically undrinkable. Though we did not eat dinner in the hotel, their posted dinner offerings sounded very dull - breaded fish, pork chops - nothing that sounded very Italian. There were several package tour groups that ate there and we pitied them. The lobby was rather dark and the upholstery on the chairs in the lobby were full of holes. It had a very old fashioned, worn out feeling to it. All in all our stay was ok, but I had the feeling that the management was putting very little money back into the hotel. I don't know that I would stay there again, or recommend it to a friend.
A Hoteliers Brief Summary
I have worked in the Hospitality industry for the past 20 years and have a broad knowledge of the industry, I also carry out inspections of hotels in the UK on a commercial basis and report my findings. I returned from a break in Sorrento yesterday and in general enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Capri, I arrived at approx 22.30 from the airport in Naples. My first impressions were good, reception was quick and efficient. The room was clean and tidy as was the bathroom. There was a supply of spare pillows, extra sheets etc in the wardrobe and all were clean. I contacted reception and asked where the safe key was as I wanted to secure my Passport and valuables, this cost 10 euros. The TV did not work correctly, I watched an awful lot of CNN on this holiday but thankfully the air conditionong did. Down to the restaurant I was confronted with a selection of badly prepared and cooked marinated vegetables, packet cheese and economy Ham, with stale bread. These were served at room temperature of at least 20 degrees centegrade, and were left uncovered. I ate the bread, a few salad leaves, ordered a couple of bottles of Peroni, which were ice cold and went to bed. Down for breakfast, a buffet served at room temperature again, with the same economy ham and packet cheese, a good selection of cereals, warm but dry crossaint, fresh fruit which was excellent, toast and preserves. There were some premixed fruit cordials which were cold and refreshing although fresh juice would have been better and more in line with their 3* rating. We ordered our evening dinner which was a 4 course affair commencing with a buffet of Vegetables, I chose Pasta in a tomato sauce for the starter and just to be on the safe side the Mozzerella and Tomato Salad for the main course as it is supposed to be a speciality of the area. Lunch was eaten away from the hotel, Linguine with Clams one of my all time favourites we returned there 3 times as the food was some of the best Italian bistro cooking I have tasted. Back to the hotel to freshen up and down for dinner, the buffet of vegetables was poor, pasta overcooked, salad uninteresting with no dressing, although my wife pointed out that there was balsamic and oil on the buffet so I used this. There were a selection of puddings all looked pleasent but again all served at room temperature and it was a gamble I was not willing to take so I had fruit. The rest of the food was of a similar standard for the rest of the holiday, so as you can imagine we ate out quite a lot. I noticed on two occasions the Chef doing a spot of gardening in his chefs uniform during breakfast and on one occasion digging a bag of soil and taking it into the kitchen, I joked that he must have run out of gravy browning! In conclusion the Hotel Capri, It is clean and tidy, front of house staff are the most hardworking group of people I have met and all were pleasent and polite, Tony in the restaurant deserves a particular mention. I did not see the owner talk to any guests, or in fact smile during our week there, he seemed totally disinterested in any of his customers. Food hygiene is appalling, I have seen better on Faulty Towers! Do not eat there.
Excellent Hotel!
My wife and I stayed here in June 2005 and found it an excellent Hotel. I don’t think its Rating does it justice. The room we were in was immaculate and very clean. We had a separate bathroom with shower and hair dryer, toilet and bidet. The room itself had two beds side by side. We also had a TV and Balcony. There was Air-conditioning available round the clock too, controlled from the room as needed. The Dining area was very nice and the food of a very high standard. You have to order evening dinner at breakfast time but the Menu is on your table each morning when you arrive down. While courses are served at Dinnertime there is a Buffet as well for extra veg. etc. and for Desserts. Breakfast is served by way of the Buffet with a number of options but the waiters bring the Tea or Coffee directly to your table. When we were there they had two charming waiters serving the tables who were both efficient and courteous. As were the Reception Desk too. There is a swimming pool of moderate size at the back and sunbeds are available. We didn’t use it however as we spent each day sightseeing or shopping. This Hotel far exceeded our expectations and as it is near the centre of Sorrento would provide an excellent base for anyone who wants to explore the town. It’s also just a few minutes walk from the Train Station and bus stops if you want to go further afield. While the main road outside is busy the traffic is one way on that stretch and always flows, also there are no bars or clubs nearby that would cause a disturbance. Mind you we were at the back so maybe that helped, however I asked people with a front room and they said they had no complaints. So the Hotel Capri is a Hotel that I can heartily recommend!
Great Location
Just home after a lovely break in Sorrento - stayed at the Capri which is in a great location very close to the bus and train station and all the shops and restaurants and activity of town. It's not right in the middle of it so its not noisy when you have an early night..and there are no pubs with loud music - always a bonus! The swimming pool is small but very nice - they must have paid attention to last years complaints because they have a lovely area now! I happily sat out all day and took a few dips, you won't be doing laps in the pool but it's absolutely fine for cooling down and is clean and new so no complaints. The food was grand really delicious some days and ok others - I suppose it must depend on taste, my husband ate all round him so it can't have been that bad!! It would be nice if there was a bar and that is the only thing I missed but there is so much going on down town that it doesn't really matter that much. I had to laugh when I read someones review of the staff not being interested because I was nearly embarrassed at the welcome we received and the lavish salutes we got as we passed in and out by reception!! My hairdryer blew and someone immediately came up with a super salon quality one (hair crisis diverted!) All in all I would recommend it, it's a 3 star hotel and I think is one of the best 3 stars we have stayed in..for the money we paid it was well worth it and very enjoyable. Ciao!!
Very Central
I stayed here last October, and because I have some difficulty walking was looking for a resonably priced hotel in the Center. I was delighted to find Hotel Capri. If your looking for a swimming pool this is not the place for you. Our room was quite small and very warm, and we did ask for a room with a balcony if one became available, however, the receptionist never got back to us about this. On the plus side, the dining area was very nice and dining staff pleasant and helpful. For me a larger more airy room would have made this stay much better, but if your looking for a hotel where you don't need to climb a hill to get to this is an excellent choice. Shops, bars are only a few steps away. And the best Pizza is over the road facing the hotel.
Great hotel, great location
I have stayed in the Hotel Capri twice and will definitely go back again. The location is excellent, it's just a couple of minutes walk from the main square and all the shops and restaurants. The rooms are lovely, seemed to be quite recently decorated and very very clean. I was surprised to see in other reviews that they food wasn't good. I enjoyed all my meals there and I would be quite a fussy eater. It is nice to eat out one or two nights though, not because the food isn't good in the hotel but because there's just such a great selection of little restaurants around the town. There is a little bar area but if you're planning on have more than a few drinks I'd advise to go out of the hotel as it is quite small but because you're so near everywhere it's very easy to do that. The swimming pool wasn't great but our rep told us they were constructing a new one for 2005, I'm looking forward to seeing that when I go back this June!
HOTEL CAPRI SORRENTO
I went to hotel capri in July 04. It was a very clean hotel, we had a double room with a balcony at the back, it was quite and it was overlooking the lemon trees. I did hear of someone having a room at the front who found it noisy, also they had no balcony - so if your staying here ask for a balcony and you will get the back of the hotel. The pool was as if it was bought off the shelf, it was about 15ft long and 10ft wide but it was fine to cool down, like a big Vat of water, not in the ground but on the ground. Sun loungers at no extra charge. The restaurant was good but they share tables, so if your looking for a romantic meal on your own, you will have to go out. Lucky for us we had a table on our own, but all the other people sharing seemed to get on great. It was a set menu each night with a few choices. You would order your meal after your breakfast for that night, starters & main course were served but the vegies, chips and desert were buffet style. I thought food was better if you go early, 7.30pm, it was fresher. I do recommend this hotel as it was so central to the main square. Now for excursions - you can get Capri for 19euro at the harbour, get the train to capri for 1.30euro each way then a taxi to anna capri, here you can get a cable car to the top of the mountain - this is the highlight of capri. We went through an agent and paid 53euro each which I thought was a bit of a rip off. We did the Blue Cruise around Amalfi for 22euro- same price as with agent. We did pompeii and vesuivus (spelling ) on day. 36euro for coach with agent then you pay extra for ves--- 6 euro and another 10euro for pompeii 12 euro for lunch - one person said they got a train and pompeii ticket for 13euro. We also went to a musical and then to the Foreigners bar afterwards - this bar is open air dancing, foxtrot, tango, slasa, its a bit like the afters of a wedding only outdoors. Shopping is ok - not much in sorrento, bar your normal holiday shops ceramics, sweets and leather etc. You can get silk ties for 5euro - no guesses what my pressies were. Beach - its only a pier with sun loungers and it costs 10euro per day - didnt like this part as i love the beach. Well I hop i helped who ever is thinking of going here - you will enjoy it but I thought 1 week was enough for us, others fall in love with the place and would love to live there, so...... ENJOY!!!!!
Brochure misleading
Good central location.Rooms small but comfortable. Food so-so to poor.Dinner had to be ordered at breakfast. NO BAR! Pool is a giant paddling pool six feet above ground and accessed by a ladder. Badly understaffed. Owner/manager totally disinterested.
Read the small print!
Travelled with three friends to the Capri Hotel on 28th May 2004 for one week. Good location. The "pool" that they have added for 2004 is a joke. It is simply a giant paddling pool placed in the yard. Very off-putting. Also off-putting were the signs placed strategically around advising guests that they were not allowed to consume any food or drinks in the vacinity of the pool which were purchased outside the hotel. This was enforced so rigidly by the owners that an elderly lady was asked to remove a bottle of mineral water from a poolside table one one occasion!
