May 2006, Mrs S Jones

We arrived at Funchal in glorious May sunshine, and left at the end of an all-too-short week in glorious May sunshine - and every day in between was clear blue sky and temperatures in the mid to high 20s. This was our third visit to Madeira but our first stay at the... more

On our first visit to Madeira we stayed at the Pestana Miramar complex, which is linked to the Pestana Village complex and where the breakfast and evening meals are mainly taken. The hotel is gorgeous - well landscaped and decorated. The staff are extremely helpful - which... more

Oct 2004, Sooty

Having heard so much about Madeira, we decided to check up personally on all the favourable reports. We arrived one grey and wet morning in October and were quite amused to hear the apologies.... ‘it’s not usually like this!’ etc. etc. However, within 2 days we... more

1st class
Miramar is an example to all hotel/apartment owners as to how to run a business in the proper manner. The complex is never anything but spotless, facilities and service are all that you could require and the location is one of the best in Funchal. We have stayed at the Miramar almost every year since 2001 and have never had cause for complaint. The office staff are most knowledgable and nothing is too much trouble for them. Funchal itself is a classy resort, excellent shops, cafes and a lot of good restaurants. Although there are no beaches, neither are there any stag or hen parties, this isn't a place for the typical Brit abroad thank goodness.
Fantastic Service and Excellent Facilities
We stayed at this hotel with our 10 month old baby and we had a fantastic time. We had booked one of the studio apartments which made it much easier catering for the baby and meant that we could keep things cool in the fridge. Our room was a great size and we had plenty of space for the travel cot and high chair (which were in pristine condition). We also had a balcony so on evenings we were in, the baby could sleep in the room and we could have a drink outside. All the staff from the front desk to the restauarant were fantastic - they could not have been more friendly or helpful. We also got some very good advice and recommendations about walking and eating out. I could not recommend this hotel highly enough - we had a brilliant stay and if we were going back to Madeira would have no hesitation than to go back to the Pestana.
Great Allrounder
October 2007 Madeira is fantastic for walking - safe, scenic and some challenging levada routes. We first stayed at the Pestana Village in spring 2006 and had a really great time. This year we stayed at the sister hotel, Pestana Miramar which has slightly better appointed rooms than the Village. The facilities are really good - several restaurants on site (excellent buffet breakfast included), indoor and outdoor pools, gym massage etc etc. The staff are excellent - friendly and very helpful. It's 15 minutes walk down into the center of Funchal and probably 20 minutes walk back up the hill - we normally used a taxi back which cost around €3.50 either way. Trying to find something to criticize I could only say that if they offered 15 minutes free internet, instead of having to buy a voucher for €3 then it would be perfect. We will certainly return.
An excellent hotel for friendly service and range of facilities
My wife and I enjoyed a most enjoyable holiday in the Pestana Miramar - late Aug / early Sept. The quality of the friendly customer service was exceptional. The hotel is surrounded by lovely and very well maintained gardens. We booked on a B&B basis - the buffet breakfast gives a great start to each day. The several swimming pools provide variety and give a different perspective. The views over Funchal Bay are outstanding. The hotel also has on-site massage treatment facility. The hotel is low rise and very well located - a short walk from the centre of Funchal and not quite in the "hotel / holiday zone", although this is accessible. The hotel has several high quality retaurants, and there are a number of excellent restaurants nearby (we really like the Larriera Portuguesa seafood restaurant). All in all a hotel operating to the highest standards and one we are happy to recommend and which we will be happy to revisit in the future.
One of the very best hotels we've stayed in !
My partner and I plus another couple we regularly holiday with were here for 5 nights recently and had a fabulous stay. We really could not find fault with the place (other than the swimming pool temperature, which was pretty bracing both in and out). We had suites in the old building and these really were very comfortable and with huge balconies that gave us beautiful sea views. The rooms and all the other areas of the hotel we went into were spotlessly clean and all staff from maids to receptionists to managers were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast spread was very good and certainly plentiful and they served us champagne on a specially prepared table on the morning of my partner's birthday, which was a nice touch. We ate in one of the restaurants (the rustic one) on our last evening and found good food, good service and good value - in common with all the restaurants we visited during our stay. We may visit Madeira again sometime in the future in order the explore the north side of the island which we didnt get to. If we do, we will have no hesitation in returning to the Pestana Miramar.
Old world charm
Dear Ms.Vasconcelos Re: Our recent stay at “Miramar” 22nd January to 5th February 2007 Room No 6406 We would like to convey to yourself and all your staff our sincere thanks for making our stay at the Miramar so comfortable and relaxing. From the moment we arrived at reception until our departure we were cared for superbly by all members of your staff. We can genuinely say were treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Throughout our stay we felt were individuals Peter and Anne Nettleton, not a room or booking number. The Reception, Guest Relation, Portering, Dining Room, Room Maids, Maintenance, Gardening and Timeshare Staff are all credit to the Pestana Company. They all give 110% We would appreciate you sharing this letter with all your staff, as it was not possible to thank each and every one of them who worked so very hard to make our stay so enjoyable. We look forward to meeting you all again next year when we return to our timeshare purchase, which we completed this year, at the Village. Once again our thanks and we look forward to returning to your beautiful Hotel and Island in the years to come, plus the opportunity to visit other Timeshare Accommodation within the Pestana Group. Kind Regards. Yours Sincerely Peter and Anne Nettleton
Very pleasant, good location
This was the first visit for my wife and I to the Mirimar although we have been to Madeira many times before. The location is excellent a short walk to many resturants and the town centre is approx 15 minutes waking. Buses and taxis are easy to get with a bus stop right at the door. The complex , Mirimar and Pestana Village together make up the resort , two good sized pools and a pleasant indoor pool. Fortunately the weather was good enough that we did not use the indoor pool, nor did we use the resturants in the complex prefering to eat outside. The gardesn in the complex are quite stunning ,very colorful and well maintained. Our apartment was well maintained and equiped and quite large, bedroom, small kitchen 2 full bathrooms, living/dinning room/. The only draw back was that our small balcony did not get any sun at all during the day. As mentioned in an earlier review the evening entertaimnet was definately geared to the older more sedate crowd. All in all a very pleasnt resort hotel in an ideal location.
Good but with some niggles
The Pestana Miramar and the Pestana Village together form the Garden Resort and are well situated and (unusually)low rise. The gardens contain a range of beautiful tropical plants. The room we had was large and nicely furnished with some cooking facilities and a 'fridge. There were 3 restaurants on site and all provided good fare. The only downside to eating was the incessant "Riverdance" musak. There were 2 outdoor swimming pools which were cool (to be expected in March) and 1 indoor pool which was scarcely warmer. There was also a very disappointing jacuzzi which could only be described as a "cool-tub". The evening entertainment was uniformly lifeless and quite poor for a hotel of this quality. Overall this hotel offers good quality accomodation in a nice location but appears to be geared to the older more staid guest (at least in March !)
Absolutely brilliant!
I stayed at Miramar with my family, and it's definitely the best aparthotel I've ever been! Our lovely room had stunning views to the sea and lovely pool area. It's little rainy whole two weeks, but no matter, there was also indoor swimming pool and hot jacuzzi. Also all services of Pestana Village Hotel can be used. PS. If you want little more luxury accommodation, book an executive suite from the original Miramar main building (1924). Unforgetable holiday!
A pleasant hotel with beautiful grounds
Stayed at Miramar August 2004, it is a well laid out hotel with tropical gardens and pool. The staff are helpful and the rooms are adequate, but the air-con was not working in our room, making it very hot and unpleasant, and apparently many other rooms also had no air-con working. The breakfast buffet left a lot to be desired. Overall not a bad place to stay if visiting Madeira but it's not near the sea and has no access to it.
