It was awful - we lost money and time :(
Do not go to this hotel! We have got back and I hated every minute of it. Crete is definitely worth seeing but do not stay in the kyknos hotel!

We've just come back from a great stay at the Kyknos. The location was fantastic; the room was comfortable and clean; the staff were very pleasant; and the food was good with lots of variety. There were lots of beaches to choose from and all were nearby. The bus stop to... more

The Kyknos is not 4* however the rooms were reasonable and the air conditioning worked well and at 40 degrees it was needed. The water was always hot unlike the food at times but there was always plenty on offer and finding huge bowl of strawberries as part of dinner was a... more

My wife and I stayed at the Kyknos Hotel (Thomas Cook has it incorrectly advertised as Kyknos Beach Hotel) for a week on a B&B basis. The hotel is located on the main beach road that runs through Stalis into Malia and as such is ideally located if you enjoy going out for... more

Well I have to say I find the reviews on Kyknos harsh to say the least. I never felt uncomfortable with the guests or staff - OK sure, they are mostly Europeans there but plenty of English people as well. Pool bar was disappointing drinks wise but a great atmosphere. Food... more

Hmmm. Don't visit if you don't like Greek food? Well, it is Greece after all. I mean, if a Greek person came to the U.K. they might complain that they did not see one gyros or kleftiko all week. I personally feel that if you go to a foreign country you eat foreign food. And... more

not so bad, but not 4stars anyway
As others, I have read the complaints before I went and was terrified. It was not so bad as I read and I must say, it was a pleasant stay anyway. But the hotel was not certainly 4star quality and not having it booked as last minute for half the price, I would be very dissatisfied. Meal was of an avarage quality, but I prized its local character, there were local specialities everyday. I was there to engorge the atmosphere, so I was happy. On the other hand, I understand other's complaints especially on some of the continental meal, there was no ketchup, nor mustard to sausages at breakfast. This was certainly not so big a problem the sausages were terrible anyway. Scrambled eggs of a poor quolity. Cold meat and soups ovenready. An ugly ham. But I love their yogurt, I only long for the chocolate type they managed to offer only once. But the yogurt was exceptional even itself or with fruit. The usually mentioned problems with staff came from their overwork. For the whole 14 days of my stay, they served from 7:00 to 21:30 without breaks, everyday without at least a free day. The rudness came from the fact certainly. Also the quality of the personel was somewhat problematic. They brought me opened bottle of wine, when I wanted to pay, they spread some notes and coins over the table so that I find the change myself etc. They made noisy bangs when cleaning tables and serving new tableware. The desk clark usually said quite rudely "thanks and bye" which I consider a very unpolite. I overheard one of his conversations with a guest asking for permission to take one beer with him to a room, the answer was precisely this "I cann't help you. Bye" said with a disgusted accent. Regarding the rooms, the sink and bath had problems draining and there was only one electrical outlet in the whole room, yet strategically placed at the corridor (there was no other in the bathroom for shaving either). On the other hand, the room was ultimatelly clean. If there were cocroaches experienced, they must have come from the outside. So as I have said. It was pleasant stay taking into account the lastminute price, local meal, fine weather, the 150m distance to the sea and my famous wife.
Cockroaches and rude managers and staff
Cockroaches in two of the rooms we stayed in. Manager approached us on arrivals and told us he was giving us "two beautiful rooms" and as we were English we were stereo typed as being drunks who wreck the place. Staff were very rude and unhelpful. Remember to take 20.50 Euros for your fridge and safe as these are not included in the price of the room, this is not a deposit you have to buy it. We did buy both and the safe was very very small and the fridge broke after 3 days and we only got part of our money back for it. Wires were hanging out of the walls in the bathroom and bedroom. Golf clubs and tennis facilities are not free as it states on the hotel website you have to pay each time you use it. Breakfast was the same every day we stayed there and was disgusting. Water is heated by solar panels on the roof so in the morning the water is always cold.
The second best hotel in Stalis
I read all the reviews on Kyknos before going to the hotel (too late to change the booking) and I was terrified that I will have a terrible holiday. But we had the perfect time there. I should state that it was our first time in Greece so we can not compare it to anything. The hotel seamed to be one of the best in Stalis, very close to a wonderful beach, not crowded, very good for families with kids. Just max 10 minutes away from the beach, close to tavernas, close to a shop, quiet in the night. We were there with our 3 yo, so we were not looking for a lively resort. Although this one is, with lots of bars and caffees and restaurants and shops, Kyknos is away from the noise, in a beautiful garden. It has pools, one for kids, a very rude pool bartender who is better to avoid. Also there was one moustache waiter who shouted at everybody to follow the rules and ask him for a table when coming to the restaurant. But the food was pretty good, we didn't have time in a week to get bored with the menu. So if you are looking for a good hotel in a resort, Kyknos is good. We had a perfect time there, we loved the beach, the food, the view from our room. The room was OK, the TV is terrible, no good program, no cartoons for the kids. But you could see a movie at the caffees in the resort. Note that it is for sure not the place to go if you are looking for genuine Greek holiday. This is a resort, with all the modern facilities and lots of european options on the menu. But we had great Greek meals, even at the hotel. The road to the beach was brilliant, with lots of flowers and a singing something that we never found out what it was. Probably crickets, but thousands of them. You can go to Kyknos if you want a holiday on the beach, quiet and relaxing, never go to Hersonissos. It's the first we saw on our way from the airport and it looked dirty and not attractive at all; and the beaches were totally ugly. Theodora from Romania
Okay as a base!
We have just came back from the Kykons Beach and let me say, I was expecting the worst, but infact it wasn't as bad as I expected. The rooms were very basic, but they were clean and air conditioned. There was maid service everyday and clean towels were issued everyday. We hired a fridge and a safe and they were well worth the 24 euros (for the week). Upon arrival the check-in staff were friendly and welcoming and we found all staff to be courteous and helpful, nothing was a problem for them. The only mishap we came across was on our first day, our toilet was blocked and so we couldn't use it at all. We continously complained at reception however, it wasn't fixed until the next day. My partner and I travelled with a 5 year old and we were pleased to see that as well as the main pool (which was more suitable for older children and adults) there was a smaller pool across the road from reception. It was fantastic as it wasn't crowded like the main pool was infact sometimes we were the only people there! We tried breakfast a couple of mornings, but because I am a very fussy eater it wasn't to my liking. The choice of food was plentiful but some of it didn't look appertising at all. We found a bar, Mambo's just down the road, so we went there every morning - the food was lovely. I would recommend that if you book this hotel to go self catering (if you can) or bed and breakfast like we did. So don't panic if you are going to this hotel (like I did) because you will enjoy it.
Disgusting
Hello Folks, I am not one to write reports about holidays and resorts but when you stay at the most unfreindly and appaling places which ruins your holiday then I am tempted to do so. First off this place is not 4star resort and is more akin to a 2star guest house. The family who own the hotel have no idea of customer service nor how to be welcoming or the idea of why people come on holday. The staff are overworked, working for seven months solid, which explains the grumpy atmosphere which runs through the hostel. The general manager on our arrival placed us in the bungalows which were shoddy, then moved us to our room two days later, in the hotel which was marginally better. The manager Vasalis is also keen on keeping guests children alone with him, in his office, which to me is not on and when I questioned him I was sworn at. The food is disgusting and catered for germans which make up the majority of the guests.(Dont expect a smile or a reply back to your greeting!!) Upon complaning to the manager and receptionist I was told If I dont like it here then I should leave. Overall all I can say is do not stay at this hotel if you wish to be treated as a guest. This is a familly run hotel who are all obnoxious with no training or idea of how to run a hotel. You will be better of saving your money and staying where you feel welcome. Thanks for your time.
rooms clean but food terrible
booked half board for the last two weeks in July. On our first night we were put into apartments next to the kyknos(not the Kyknos hotel) but were moved 2 days later into the main building of the Kyknos. The rooms were clean and we had maid service every day with clean towels daily. We went to breakfast and dinner the first night which was disgusting and we never ate there again. We found a bar called Mambo's 5 minutes from the hotel who served excellent food and ate there the rest of our holiday. The staff at the Kyknos were very friendly and always helpful. If the hotel could get the food right it would be excellent. I will go back to the Kyknos in October but as room only!
Not as bad as everyone is saying
First of all I do not think this hotel is as bad as everyone is saying and we went in peak time. OK we are younger there was two of us 21 & 25 but went to stay there we hardly went into Malia. Is full of Dutch, not Germans they don't like to be associated to Germans but they are friendly enough people and the sunbed thing is fine, we was getting up about 9 am to put our towels on the sunbeds on the way to breakfast and never did we have trouble getting any sunbeds. If you are in the apartments of this complex you have your own pool anyway that hotel users cannot use. Rooms are sparce - just two beds, wardrobe, bathroom, mirror and dressing table and balcony. No kitchette like it says on it's website and you have to rent the fridge for 15euros a week - joke was not impressed with that. And the safe you have to rent too. But they are very clean kept clean every day by a maid and cannot complain about the hygiene anywhere!!! We went Bed and Breakfast and you can go All inclusive here - don't! The breakfast is the same every morning and it's not very nice!! So I cannot imagine what the lunch and dinner would be like. It could be me being fussy but all there was were loads of different rolls (which i had with jam every morning), omlette (thats black), discusting sausages, hard boiled eggs. Fetta cheese, tomatoes ham and normal cheese. The fruit is tinned fruit that has lost it colouring. So not nice food really and so wouldn't think all inclusive would be worth its money. Plus there are so many lovely restaurants (recommend restaurant right next door on left - Ugine is in there, lovely man and great food for very reasonable prices) that its not necessary to go all inclusive there. Staff, some are friendly some aren't but that's what you get everywhere. Manager is nice, bar man is nice and some others are too. If you have a crap flight on way home i.e. like us we wasn't getting picked up until 00.35 on the Saturday but had to be out of our apartments on the Friday at 12 noon we paid extra 30euros to keep our room until 11pm on the Friday so it's not so bad. They try and argue with you and say you can't and then it looks like they're doing you a favour when they give in and charge you 40euros. Say no! Got them down to 30euros for simple fact that it's one of our bloody nights we've paid for anyway. Nice location - lovely restaurants and cocktail bars, lovely beach but you have to walk down a bit for that to the other end of Stalis - only 5-10 mins (come out hotel turn right). Overall had a lovely holiday.
I was glad to come home!!
It was the first time i had been to Stalis, although other family members are regular visitors. However, i feel Kyknos Beach is the worst hotel i have ever been to. I went with another three adults and two children on an all inclusive holiday. The staff (managers included) were rude, arrogant and very obnoxious. The food was cold and our room flooded 6 times. Our room was also by, what looked like and smelt like on occassions, a sewerage drain and our terrace was smack bang in the middle of a through way for other guests. Obviously, because of the above issues and many more! we went out to eat and drink, totally contradicting the whole point of an all inclusive holiday. I couldn't believe the disrespect staff had for adults and their manner did not change towards children either. It's a place i would NOT recommend. it's not at all relaxing and i was so glad to get home. PLEASE avoid this hotel at all costs - even if it has special offers!!
What a nightmare
overall a very clean hotel. but unless your German then be prepared for RUDENESS, ARROGENCE AND NO RESPECT. there was a group og 7 of us and we were the only English in the hotel, One of the locals who we hired quad bikes from told us that he thought it was a German only hotel and he couldn't believe we were staying there. it was a nightmare we got moaned at for anything and threatened by the bar man
Bad
Nice hotel but terrible personell, poor hygiene. The all in arrangement is very limited and the drinks are of poor quality.
