Arrived 0330am, reception closed and key left on stool outside. Had to find right block and room in the pitch dark. Had booked for 2 adults one child (6). Room made up for 2 adults but no child bed made up so had to sleep on sofa. Aircon off so sweltering sleepless night. Asked owner in morning about child bed. No apology and no bed made, did manage to get air con remote (for charge, nothing unusual there, though) after 4 times of asking. No maid service on 1st day and still no bed made in spite of numerous requests - 2nd night for child on sofa, 3rd night, having asked several times during course of day, finally had 2 sheets delivered at 11pm (way after child's bedtime) by barman, who was the only member of staff left on premises. Owner goes at 3.30pm and closes reception. Hardly any staff - 2 surly restaurant workers who seem to work all day every day and 2 cleaners who may or may not visit your room and may or may not clean it if they do. 3rd bed often unmade. Room stank of damp, with visible damp and paint peeling in kitchen, bathroom and stair cupboard. Kitchen cupboards unusable as anything you put in them (including crockery) smelt/tasted of damp. Had to pay full day rate to keep room on until 2100 (we needed to leave at 2330) and then they tried to stop us having evening meal (which was our board basis) even though we'd only had 6 due to early hours arrival. Most surly and unhelpful staff ever. Wouldn't recommend my dog to stay here!

Firstly when we arrive with my wife we were dissapointed of bali generally. After 3 hours of sleep and a bath we changed tottaly our minds. After we realised that we were disappointed cause we haven't sleped for 27 hours(deposit money at bank, prepare last laguages etc etc) which of those we were travelling for 12 hours bus first and then ship(not highspeed but believe me it's better than highspeed). All people including hotel's "personel" were very friendly and kind and ready to offer you the best accomodation ever. The sea is perfect and it's only 3-4 mins walking away frrom hotel, rooms are perfect, food is great and generally everything was great.Hope next year to have enouh money to go again. Sorry for my bad english

This was our first time to Crete and booked at last minute through Bookable Holidays and I'd love to go back though not to this hotel. The flight and private taxi transfer were excellent (though driving is a little hair raising!).
I agree with almost all the other reviews already posted - the hotel offers superb views and beautiful garden. The studios were spacious but we had to pay for air con, (didn't bother paying for tv or safe) Didn't use the kitchen facilities - tried the kettle but it didn't boil very well. Very laid back atmosphere in hotel and all resort no point in being in a hurry for anything here!. Only saw two members of staff (apart from chamber maids - again two). The waitress in the restaurant - referred to in a previous review and still as grumpy (but the poor girl was overworked and underpaid) and the laid back bar man/receptionist (who's not as daft as he seems!). The rooms were cleaned and bins emptied daily but beds and towels only changed once in a week! Hotel pool not really suitable for liitle children. It is set high on the cliff so not siutable for anyone with walking or mobility problems - lots of steps and steep climbs down to Port and back up to the village. Take shoes you can walk in and an inhaler - for the breath-taking views! This would be a great B&B or Self Catering option. Breakfast was fine but dinner appauling we only ate in twice (giving them the benefit of the doubt second night) then sampled the delights of some of the eight restaurants and bar/restaurants down in the port area, everywhere gave free crisps or nuts or fruit when you order drinks. Prices here in Bali (Port) were cheaper than in the bigger resorts of Chania and Rethymnon. All were fabulous but we can particularly recommend POSTO set in the corner (great hospitality, (too much free Raki, friut, nibbles), run by a lovely couple , good prices, excellent food and check out the reading in the menus!!). Also try Valentinos - excellent food, prices and service. The little beach in the port area is lovely (no pebbles), good for swiming and snorkling. We had a trip on the Bali Express (mini train) and saw the other beaches with tavernas and restaurants but didn't feel the need to visit as the port had enough to keep us going for a week! Try the boat trip and hire a car to see other parts of the island (Chania and Rethymnon were lovely). This was our first visit to Crete I hope it won't be our last, one of the most beautiful and welcoming places we have been ( but even in June it was VERY hot.)

This hotel is in a good spot in a lovely resort, but with staff who seemed intent on providing terrible service. All the English guests that we spoke to compared it to Fawlty Towers.
There is a lovely beach 400 yards round the corner from the hotel, Evita Bay. It has two good tavernas on it, one of them with excellent food and very friendly staff. The swimming is safe, plenty of things to look at while snorkelling. The beach is pebbly rather than sandy, plenty of sun beds at a reasonable price. The weather in late July was perfect.
Bali village is in the opposite direction from this beach. It is about 400 yards away again, a bit of a climb to get back from. A couple of beaches there too, not as good as Evita Bay. Plenty of quiet bars and tavernas - "The Best" is the best restaurant there, the Taverna on the beach is equally as good with some excellent meat dishes.
It's a shame that Ormos Atalia occupies such a strong position in such a lovely family resort. The facilities are fine - ok apartments, nice pool. The food is poor, a buffet arrangement in fairly unhygienic surroundings - by the end of our fortnight I was eating breakfast at the taverna on the beach so that I didn't have to encounter one particular member of staff, an extremely ignorant large blonde woman, possibly from Sweden. She was rude to just about all of our family on separate occasions. We ate at other restaurants every night.
The problem seems to be that nobody is in charge - the only English speaking member of staff, possibly the owner, was heavily pregnant and rarely available. Reception was almost always unstaffed. Any requests were treated more as an inconvenience than anything else. One of the staff used to sleep on the sofa in the bar in the afternoon, wearing only his jeans. I don't think you get a star for that particular feature.
The hotel seems to be in the middle of some development work, so the bar/buffet arrangement may improve. As I said it's a shame because with decent management and the summary execution of the rude blonde woman this could be a good hotel, because it's in a good spot near a lovely beach.

My wife & I stayed at the Ormos Atalia during the middle two weeks of October
Unfortunately the first ten days of our stay were the worst Crete has experienced since Noah.
This hotel is sited right at the end of the village of Bali at the top of a hill and is definitely not suited to those with any walking difficulties. The hundreds of steps needed to reach the harbour were not lit and were very dangerous.
Also at this time of year many of the local restaurants, cafes and bars were being closed for end of season. There was a road train which toured the village but this was also stopped during our stay. It took a good mile of up and down walking to reach the bus stop on the national highway so the road train was definitely missed.
We hired a car to get around the island (nothing else to do in the rain). If you do the same don’t worry about car insurance, increase your life insurance. The concept of double white lines and not overtaking on blind corners has yet to reach Crete. The aftermath of many accidents was evident.
The Hotel itself was very nicely laid out with apartments and studios all on different levels and the patios beautifully decorated with numerous cacti and bougainvillea.
We had a studio but as we were on half board we did not use the basic cooking tackle.
The room had no extras, i.e. no TV, radio or heater but was equipped with aircon. It was not needed during our stay. The mattresses were rock hard.
My main complaint is that the bins were not always emptied every day (and you know what is in the bins in Greek toilets)
The food and restaurant was acceptable but not special. It paid to be early for meals or most would already be inside German stomachs.
The best thing about the bar/restaurant was Lahki the barman who gave the impression of being rather dour but really had a great sense of humour and for regulars was generous with the raki ,ouzo and Metaxa..
The pool area did not seem large enough for a full hotel but Bali has a choice of four lovely beaches the one down to the left of the Hotel being the best.
Overall the hotel was excellent value for money.
Would I re-visit - No!
I don’t want to go anywhere where the weather is worse than England.

This hotel was one of the biggest and most welcome surprises. I had booked a last minute week with a friend to go and have some time reading, chilling out and not being a mother. This was the perfect place.
May is beautiful anyway in Crete, but the location of this hotel is truly stunning, clinging, as it is, to a hillside which plummets down to the sea. The hotel itself is built like a village with apartments either side of pathways and steps which snake down the hill, and brim with roses, jasmine, figs and all number of exotic plants; a jungle of sights and smells!
The views from our room were on one side of the sea with mountains sliding steeply into it, and on the other the charming fishing village of Bali. The pace of life then was slow (I understand it picks up a bit in high season!) and the people of the village genuinely friendly.
The family who run the hotel could not have been more welcoming, the room was cleaned daily, and the bar, restaurant and pool were immaculate. The food was simple, but very good value. Several good restaurants in the village or neighbouring Paradise beach also provided delicious lunches and suppers, and there is a wonderful bar on the harbour for a drink in the evening while watching village life.
Bus routes are on the main road, several kilometers walk away - but boats go to Rethymnon from the harbour if you need an outing. We had one but were very relieved to get "home" to our beautiful haven of peace.
