1 star apartment
from trollydolly87
Was a bit apprehensive about these apts from other reviews and was dissapointed about them overall. Weather was lovely all week brill sunshine, we went 3-10/3/08. I travelled with my partner and 2 other couples. We went as a cheapy holiday before our main one later in the year.Previous reviews suggested it was very basic but clean, and this is what we expected. Bad points: No linen changed all week Lack of maid service, and when did 'clean' appt wasn't to a high standard at all Damp on the bathroom ceilings that had been painted over Pay as you watch TV that if we left credit on, the cleaner would watch and use up the rest Lots and lots of cats, but they didn't bother you No english speakers on reception Good points: Location, many steps but you have to expect that in G.Canaria Weather Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday, but felt very let down on the accomodation side. We thought we paid fairly for a 2 star appt but I would suggest 1 star is appropriate.
Value for Money

My wife and I stayed for 1 week, we found the apt to be clean and spacious, with everything we needed,The cats did not bother us, we did not bother them, the pool and bar area are very good, they serve good beer and one of the best prawn coctails, all at reasonable prices, it is a bit of a walk back from the lesure complex, A 3 euro taxi takes care of that,There is an exelent local bus service to Las Palmas and other destinations for days out which I would recommend, overall good value for the money, got exactly what I paid for,
Lovely Holiday

Wonderful holiday and excellent apartments!!!! We have just returned from our holiday in Canaima in Gran Canaria, I had also read a few bad reports on this place but too late after i had already booked it. Arrival: On arrivial we were greated by friendly staff and our room were ready straight away, yes there is a few steps to walk up but there is also a lift, and if you look at any other place in Puerto Rico they all have STEPS!!!! the appartments Are lovley, spotlessly clean, and everyone from the gardener, maids, bar attendants and reception staff give you a warm welcome and are very friendly. Rooms: The rooms are extremly spaceious, and very clean all have a decent balcony, with your usual, table and chairs and dryer for your wet things, The inside are bright and a nice touch of the curtians matching the material on the sofa and chair, very clean, NO rips or holes. The Bathroom was just what you needed, and hot water anytime of day or night, nice clean and kept very clean. The bedrooms are your usual, two beds a wardrobe and dressing table, clean bedding and extra covers if you require. The kitchen area is very nice marble tops, and the first time i have ever seen a kettle and a toaster in a self catering appartment which were a nice supprise, also under the sink is a full tin of insect repliant, not that we needed it, but its very thought full of the staff to place it there. People have wrote about cockroaches, but lets face it, its the Canary Islands and there as common as flies in England but WE NEVER SAW ONE!!!!!! Cats: Yes there is a few cats, (AS THERE IS IN ANY OTHER APPARTMENTS IN PUERTO RICO, WE HAVE BEEN 4 TIMES TO VARIOUS ONE) but if the people who have wrote bad reports about this, maybe they should bother to go to their welcome meeting and there they will learn, that the cats are proctected by the appartments and are cared for and fed and fresh water, dont bother them and they wont come to you, there fine. Other reports haven't bothered to mention the Birds that are there and the small pool with the teripins in, it felt like a caring place for animals. Pool: The pool is up a few steps depending on where your room is and has plenty of sunbeds for everyone and the area is a great sun trap, If you go to reception for 90c you can hire a soft lining for the day otherwise there is no charge for the sunbeds, The pool is a nice size with the childrens pool completly seperate, which we found nice and safe for the kids. The staff that run the pool are very friendly and will make you anything you like to eat even if it is not on the menu. Location: The location were ideal, not too far from the centre yes a few steps to walk down but the reception staff will ring you a taxi if you like and from the appartments, its only 2.50 euro either down or back up, As i said before an ideal suntrap. Food and drink: We would recomend the La Cribie in the bottom centre lovley food, right at the back of the March Bank, we didnt have a bad meal anywhere we went, we did go to La Cribie 3 times in the week. Fun and cheap drinks round at Tropicania bar up the stairs in the centre round the back of Harley's Bar, 3 Euro's for 2 pints of beer bargin OVERALL: A lovley place to stay and red hot weather all week round, would defo stay there agian when we do return to Puerto rico
Much dislike

Following the other posts I am worried that I have the wrong place. But, my experince of the Canaima apt. were dreadful and would not recommend it at all. On arrival at night found the apartment to be damp, grotty and almost clean, woken by Colin the Cockroach and his family running over our faces as we found we were actually in his house. The outside toilets/showers on the complex should be condemmed as they were filthy with excrement and blood. Tried to complain to anyone who would listen without success, we found the staff rude, ignorant and unhelpful. The nicest element of the Canaima was the resident cat families. After five days we moved out, a distressing holiday until we moved away from this hideous place.
it was great!

Basic but OK
from bazcymru
The apartments are very basic, but so many are in Puerto Rico. The complex is clean and pool is great - a large swimming pool and a smaller kiddies pool. The pool bar serves food all day but does close early (around 10pm). Some noise is experienced from the bars and clubs of Puerto Rico, but this is not off putting and quite enjoyable sometimes when you are siiting on your balcony. The staff are very friendly with the exception of the Manager (you will know him when you meet him). He is the most arrogant person I have ever met and actually enjoys spoiling your holiday (you can see him smile when he says no!). There are many steps around this complex so don't even consider it if you are not able to climb or lug your heavy case to your apartment. The complex is well located. There are 222 steps to the main centre (I know because my son counted them every day) or about 2 euros in a taxi. The Europa Centre at the top of the hill is a better choice as it is quieter, again about 2 euros in a taxi. This is my second visit to the Canaima, but don't think I will return again.
Honest Summary

Apartments contain hob, kettle, toaster, are basic but clean. Lift up to reception from the road but none after that so need to be reasonably agile. Pool area relaxing . Security very good as reception is high and overlooks the road - buzzer access at night. Situated far enough up so not disturbed by the music from the lively bars in the bottom centre but low enough to walk down steps to the centre (need to be fit /sober to stagger back up!) Taxi back up to the apartments is only a few euros. Walkable distance to the 3 harbours. Rolfe the receptionist extremely helpful and will ring a taxi to take you to wherever if can't face steps in the stilettos! Plenty of nice restaurants and bars particularly Harbour Lights English bar and Rhodos Palace Greek Restaurant (excellent) both next door but one to each other - just ask Rolfe to ring you a taxi and ask for Puerto Escala, get dropped off outside the shops and both of these places are on the top deck. Only a few euros from the Canaima apartments. Stayed there three times now (once at Xmas which was weird but great sunbathing at 82 degrees on Xmas Day!) although basic, would stay there again as personally want cleanliness rather than luxury and want to feel secure which these apartments provide. They do have resident cats which the staff feed - if you start, consider yourself taking in lodgers! Hope this has been of some help
what a horrible place

i booked this holiday for me and my mum cos i wanted to treat her well, it was a nightmare. When we arrived we had to wait around for someone to give us our room key, there was also loads of steps which yes you have no help with your suit case. We had finally got into our appartment which seemed ok although the kitchen was very very basic, we then unpacked our suitcase to hear very very loud music. The music which was coming from the town centre kept me and my mother up every night until 4 in the morning. This is stated in the brochure as beening a quiet relaxing holiday how wrong could they have been. Beware of the cats aswell there are loads of them starving little things hanging around on your balcony at one time we had ten cats. There was also building work going on which started at eight o clock so yes we only had 4 hours sleep until we had to get up and leave the appartments to find somewhere peaceful. I complained about the music and was told that we couldnt move so when i asked for a transfer they sai we had to pay extra which i think is totally wrong considering the holiday company was the ones who lied to us. On our arrival home i did receive compenstation for the misleading information in the brochure. If you do still want to go to these apartments make sure you are on the ground floor so you shouldnt hear the music to loudly. We was on the top floor and because you are in a valley the music rises which is why we had the problems we did. The holiday compant knew that they had put misleading information in there brochure otherwise they would not have given us a refund.
What a gem!

I arrived at about 7.30 on a Saturday evening to find the reception closed. However, there were 2 notices pinned up with my name in big red writing apologising for the closed reception and giving me a number to ring. I rang and about 20 minutes later a charming lady arrived, opened up, checked me in and hung around for 30 minutes or so in case I had any queries or difficulties. I'm glad to report I didn't. The apartment was superb! Very comfortable living room, bright and airy twin bedroom, fully specified bathroom, well equipped kitchen and spacious balcony. If I hadn't known it had been built in 1990 I would have said I was the first occupant. It was absolutely spotless! I did not have cause to visit the reception area during my stay except on arrival and departure but it looked well equipped, clean and airy and the 2 staff members I met were extremely pleasant and spoke excellent English. A 3-4 minute walk away is the Centro Commercial, a complex with numerous restaurants, bars and a variety of shops including a good sized supermarket. Car rental was also available here. It immediately adjoined the beach and what a beach! Matagorda is about halfway between Arricife and Puerto del Carmen and there is a beautiful sandy beach almost all the way along between the two. I noticed it had been awarded the EU Blue Flag and I can now see why. Whether for swimming, sunbathing or walking, it was perfect and if you didn't want to get sand between your toes, there is a beautiful walkway along its length also. Fantastic Island, great resort, and top notch apartment. What more can I say except (with apologies to Governor Arnie), I'll be back!
loved our stay at Canaima Apartments

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Canaima. I had read some reports and was expecting a very basic apartment. First impressions were that there was loads of room for our clothes and didn't have to keep tripping over suitcases as even they fitted in the huge wardrobe. They have all had new kitchen sinks fitted with marble worktops and toaster and kettles are now provided, free of charge. Only thing metered was the telly. We had a lovely colourful terrace with bouganvillea and other flowers taboot. The staff are all lovely and very courteous. Fernando the chef was a wee darlin and I'll miss his lasagne (freshly made each time) so don't get this if you're in a hurry, but hell you're on holiday anyway. I the two weeks there I didn't hear of any complaints at all and even Colin the Cockroach wasn't a problem.
