My husband and I just arrived back Sunday 6th September. Couldn't fault anything. The flights were on time the staff were very friendly and the meals were very tasty.

The apartment although basic was spotless. The maids were in 5 days a week and changed our towels daily and sheets twice. The bar at the pool was reasonably priced and you got plenty on your plate. We spoke to several couples over the fortnight who also flew with Globespan and we all agreed that it was great value for money. I would definately go back.

It is a bit of a hike back up from the centre but taxis cost less than three euros and the exercise is good for you. It's well worth it with the view we got from our apartment. There are a lot of cats but if you ignore them they don't bother you. I am a cat lover so I didn't mind them at all.

Great holiday.

Just arrived back from the...

Just arrived back from the Canaima Apartments yesterday. Yes, these apartments are basic but they are very clean and the maids do come every other day to change towels and clean. The view from the higher apartments is fantastic. The pool is adequate and kept my 12 year old son entertained every day. Round the pool are sun beds and mattresses can be hired for a euro from the bar area. Although bear in mind the “Brits Abroad” type that leave their beach towels on all day and all night for a week just so they can bag a bed!! The Canaima also has a little shop for essentials, i.e. water, water and more water! These apartments are about half way up the hillside and the steps to the shopping centre (387 of them) are fine going down but a killer coming up, get a taxi back only 3 Euros.

The actual resort of Puerto Rico is OK but be prepared to be hassled everywhere you go by staff trying to get you to go into their bar, restaurant and even their shops!! Really hard to ignore them but in the end you have to, no matter how polite a person you are. Most of these people are OK but two particular men are extremely rude, the Cockney guy outside ‘Bar Restaurant Mephisto’ decided to shout “Whatever!” at us when we had just told him we were having a browse around as it was our first night, how pleasant. Secondly, the man outside Steak House Albatros swore at us because we didn’t go in his place and went in next door, all I can say is stay well clear of places with nasty PA’s.

But on a more positive note, two great little family bars with fab entertainment are tucked away at the very back of the shopping centre are Shooters and Oasis Cocktail Bar. Both really good on price of drinks and the price stayed the same for the same round all night unlike some of the other bars (Dicey Reilly’s & Piccadilly Bar). There is an entertainer called Taz who entertains both bars and is great and remembers there are kids present! He does quizzes, bingo, daft games, all with fab prizes and more importantly allows everyone to have a laugh.

Saturday night there is a comedian on in La Fiesta who is one of funniest men ever!! Definitely worth a trip in. Also a fabulous night and excellent band on in Scruffy Murphy’s which we only discovered on our last night, mores’ the pity.

Particular nice meals were in: Volare Italian (at the harbour), San Miguel, Mau Mau, Los Geranios., Si Senor Chinese.

I expected great things from the...

I expected great things from the Canaima Apartments before we went because of the great reviews I had read, and to be fair, it met my expectations.

When we arrived, late at night, I felt that the reception could have been more clearly sign-posted as we didn't really now where to go. After finding it and checking in we made our way to the room which did have a few cockroaches but we went to reception and the man gave us a spray to use which worked wonders, so we bought our own at the Spar the next day for about 6.95€. Some lights in the room did not work which wasn't great. The view from the bedroom window was of a brick wall and didn't really let in a great deal of light. Outside our room was a bag with rubbish in it that had been burst, probably by one of the cats, but that was cleaned up the next day.

As the holiday went on I started to loosen up about the apartments and felt it was a very nice place to be. The pool area was excellent! Very peaceful and there are plenty sun loungers so you don't have to rush down in the morning and reserve your lounger with a towel. The pool bar/restaurant was very reasonably priced and the staff working there were only too happy to help :). The drinks were even on "Happy Hour" for a short while in the evening and you could get 4 pints for 5€.

As we had read, the place was swarming with cats. I don't really like cats but they were fine, some of them were really cute too. One even tried to come in our room as we left the patio door opened but you can't really blame them - they just wanted some attention!

The maids were great - even washed the dishes and provided clean towels everyday. Would have liked the bed linen to be changed more frequently though, because you now how much you sweat during the night in that heat!!

Location wise, I loved where the apartments were situated. From our room you could see gorgeous views of the hilly landscapes and could look right down to the Commercial Centre. It only takes 5 minutes to go up and down the stairs and they really do look worse than they actually are! Burns off the calories of your evening meal which is good!

Overall, very very basic but good. For the money we paid, I must admit I did expect a little more. I knew that the apartments were 2* but did think they would be a tad better - although there was nothing entirely wrong with them. A great holiday x

PLEASE READ ALL LOTS OF TIPS AND ESSENTIAL INFO!!

Me and my partner just arrived home yesterday from Puerto Rico, the Canaima apartmeants were everything we wanted, they were lovely and clean, spacious, all the staff were lovely and so helpfull, a little noise on a night but not a problem. there are lots of cats but they dont bother you, we put a bowl of water out everyday for them which they LOVED! we didnt see one cockroach atall not one!! steps to the commercial centre and beach are a bit daunting but you get used to it. and if you look closly at the steps and rocks at the side you will see lots and baby lizards but you have to look closly.

cleaners didnt change the bed linen but she cleaned nearly everyday and she also washed the dish's!!! BONUS!!

we really enjoyed it and didnt want to come home wish we had stayed longer really! but im going back again definatly!

i reccomend Parascending!! it is an amazing experience and well worth the money! that can be found on the right hand side of the beach around the harbour!! dont however book any boat trips with the people walking the beach because you will get the crappist boat and would have paid the most money so on the left side of the harbour there are loadz of boats to pick from...we paid 90 euros for the blue spirit catamaran and it wasnt worth 20 euros to be honest!!

Also the shops in the commercial centre for stuff like purses and wallets never accept the price given my purse was marked 49.80 euros and i got him down to 15 euros so it just shows what you can get, just say no sorry it too much and he will bring it down say no again and he will drop it to less than half price!!

Another tip in the commerical centre you get approached so much by people trying to get you into the resturants as there is 103 which is a lot of competition i found that if they start talking just say "ive just eaten thanx" and carry on walking then they will shut up, i reccomend The Best Steak House and also El Toeros next door brilliant food!!

The holiday overall was amazing and the apartmeants were brilliant and should be given a better key that what they hold....thanx for reading and if your heading for Puerto Rico then i hope you have an amazing time like us!!

A bit aprehensive after reading some of the reviews but needn't have worried. We had a great holiday, flat spacious and clean, reception staff helpful and even let us stay in our appt. for the whole day despite having a night time flight.Pool clean and quiet but plenty of other children to keep my 8 yr old son happy.

Puerto Rico itself is a bit of an eyesore but we are used to the Balearics, pretty with character but there are some lovely restaurants near the beach, tapas bar especially good.

Taxis plentiful and cheap and handy if travelling with kids. Beach a bit congested with way too many sunbeds but enjoyable nonetheless. Overall a great holiday, lovely location and fab flat, only saw 2 cockroaches and they were outside-fear not!

my wife & i have just returned from a winter break in puerto rico we found the canaima apts good value for money very basic, clean, the beds are hard, maybe a few cats around but nothing like some other reports.the reception & shop are a bit of a joke but the swimming pool altough cold in feb is a good size & you didnt have to be up at 5 to get a sun bed, there are plenty of cheap supermarkets around .the canaima is situated halfway up the mountain its a nice 10 min walk down to the old beach, & also not such a bad walk back up not for youngsters though, for a self catering apt you would expect a microwave but no just 2 rings to cook on not really good enough, the views are excellent & overall the canaima apts were adequate for our stay there are plenty of resturants around all very well priced a trip to mogan is a must.

Second time I have been to Puerto Rico and out of the 2, the better apartments.

We affectionately call this the 'Cat Hotel' as guess what! They rescue cats, and there are quite a few about. However never caused us any problems, and gave my niece and nephew something to chase!

Rooms are very basic, not very much hot water (had to boil some pans when I wanted a bath) and it's very noisy from the shopping/bars complex at night.

Pool was lovely though, and clean.

Lots of steps but thats Puerto Rico wherever you are. Long way to the beach, but only went once so not a problem.

Overall a nice but no frills apartment.

We absolutely loved this place....

We absolutely loved this place. It was basic but clean and spacious and we had a lovely view of the sea from our big balcony. Nice shower too. The whole complex is built into the rocks which is really pretty. The pool is at the top of the complex so gets lots of sun and is nice and quiet for the kids. The staff in the pool bar were really friendly and helpful. The only problem was the noise from the shopping centre at night but the windows blocked most of the noise out and you get used to it.

Puerto Rico can be quite loud with the bars and tacky shops but there are some excellent restaurants by the harbor (Don Quiotes and The Rhodes Palace). Went on two tours - the yellow submarine and dolphin tour. Both great. Would recommend going to Puerto de Mogan - very pretty fishing village with much quieter and cleaner beach. Also the water park in Puerto de Morgan is brilliant for kids and adults, no queues and as big as the park in Maspalomas (which was very busy and had to wait at least twenty mins for most slides).

A really great holiday!!

The Canaima apartments were exactly as described in the brochure. Basic, but clean. We cannot fault the staff, they cleaned several times in the week and also gave us fresh towels -not too keen to change bed linen though.

The rep we had was absolutely useless, always passing you on to one of the reps from other resorts...got the impression she just didn't want to work!

Would definitely go back, if rep wasn't there.

Clean apartments, friendly staff, lovely pool what more do you want. Not the most modern place I’ve stayed but real value for money. Everyone we spoke to liked the place and didn't have a bad word to say about it. There are lots of cats but don't bother you unless you feed them. Steps, what do you expect in Puerto Rico. No entertainment and bar closed at 11pm. But nice large balcony to have a drink on at night. Didn't have to get up early to put towels on sunbeds always plenty available. Will go back.

We stayed at the Canaima for two weeks although the steps were a bit daunting at first you soon get used to them.

The apartments were wonderful and the staff very helpful with any questions we asked. We had a wonderful view from our apartment and all the other guests were very friendly.

I will definitely be going back again there is so much more to see which we didn’t have time to see. We were very pleased with the cleanliness of the whole apartment site, there are a lot of cats but they don’t seem to both you at all.

Hi, all five of us stayed here in early June to celebrate my 40th we only stayed for 4 days our apartments were ok, basic but comfy. Watch out for cockroaches they appear on the steps when you crawl home. Also quite a few in the rooms.

Pool was ok we never actually ate here so I cannot comment on the food, however go to the Puerto Plata aparthotel they do a cracking breakfast also book into the restaurant. Its out of this world!

Always get a taxi home its dirt cheap and visit Harleys who play the best music to boogie the night away, go to the piano bar and small Irish bar the atmosphere is ace all in all the weather more than made up for the STEPS! Avoid walking unless it’s to the bar and back.
