Italy is full of fabulous people, it's a pity none of them run the villa Lubrense!
Our room (the most expensive)was Ok, but we had to pay extra to get a small fridge and aircon.
The restaurant and the bar were not operating and there was no one at reception to greet us and check us in on arrival.
Be warned...it is expensive to get a taxi to the villa from Sorrento and the local bus only goes past once an hour.

After searching through many holiday sites for 3 & 4 star hotels, I came upon the ‘Hotel Villa Lubrense’. I was impressed by the website and subsequently booked.
We were a day late booking in as we had a hire car breakdown in Naples and stayed in a hotel for the first night.
On arrival, we found a young girl acting as a receptionist who relieved us of our passports and gave us a key to room 304. This gave the impression that we would be in room 4 on the 3rd floor of a hotel. Not so.
We were on the second floor of a small block of rooms situated within what appeared to be a site full of wooden chalets with corrugated roofs. Bearing in mind that this was listed as a 3 star hotel, alarm bells were ringing.
We asked for a balcony and were told that all rooms had a balcony so we asked for a sea-view if possible. There was no balcony but one could see the bay of Naples by hanging out of the window.
The room was about 4 metres square with a small bathroom room off it. The bedroom itself was not very well decorated or cleaned. It contained a double bed with two tired single mattresses on it, some flat-pack furniture and a fridge.
God knows why a fridge as there was no kettle or any other means of getting a hot drink. The room faced onto a boiler room although one got used to the noise of the boilers cutting in and out after a few days.
The hotel website says “All bedrooms have bathroom with shower, balcony and heating.” - Not true. The bathroom had no bath but a very small shower (500mm x 500mm) with a cracked tray and broken corner opening door.
The tiles were jaded and had wall-plugs here and there from the fixing of old fittings and the old plastic bathroom fittings gave an air of the place being run-down. Completely in keeping with the rest of the room.
We had no balcony, and on some of the chilly evenings, the heating was down to a portable halogen heater, as the central heating didn’t seem to work. The bed linen was fairly well worn with one flat pillow each and was not changed for the week. The towels were changed once.
This place hardly warranted 1 star, never mind three. Don’t get me wrong, the wife and I have stayed in 1 star places before but having paid 1 star prices. This left us feeling that we had been ripped off.
We were booked as bed and breakfast. On the first morning, we made our way to the ‘restaurant’ for breakfast to find a serving table containing two thermos jugs of coffee or tea, both tepid and stewed, a jug of milk and a plate of dry cake covered with a paper napkin; almost inedible really. There were no staff at all.
The large dining area so cleverly photographed on the website was completely empty save for ourselves. We breakfasted out that morning and as it turned out, for the rest of the week.
The final straw was when we were charged 2 Euro per day for the use of the fridge! We had to pay up to get our passports back.
The pool was empty – of water that is. There was hardly anywhere to sit outside. No other facilities at all. No entertainment. Nowhere to eat and Villa Lubrense is on a mountain road, quite a few kilometres out of Sorrento.
But for the rental car, it would have been totally disastrous.
Personally, I would never go there again and would advise others against it, as we saw quite a few proper 3 star hotels at similar prices to the £460 pp/pw but with much better facilities and staff.
Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss.

Beautiful scenic oasis, 20 minute bus ride from Sorrento.
Villa Lubrense is simply furnished but comfortable with friendly staff.
It is the perfect base if you want to plan your own day trips or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings for a day or two during your trip.
Book a lateral sea view if you can. Overlooks Marina di Paolo, idyllic for a quiet day to unwind.
Be sure to visit San Raphael's on the beach.

The complex is stunning due to the huge amounts of time spent fine tuning the gardens and constant cleaning of all hotel areas. The pool is fantastic and rarely, if ever, crowded with jaw dropping views from Capri to Sorrento.
The bus stop is convenient and great value with regular and reliable buses to Sorrento (where boats fan out around the peninsula) or to Amalfi.
The rooms are basic but well kept and the staff are friendly. This hotel offers the beauty of the peninsula but without the English hoards found swarming Sorrento. The restaurant is extensive but always empty apart from weddings and events.
This is a great budget hotel with the most amazing pool views perfect for couples to explore a mesmerising region of Italy. For those with a sense of DIY and adventure I recommend this hotel highly. However the taxis will rip you off at every opportunity and the roads are dangerous to walk along. Definitely visit Marina Della Lobra for the best seafood and pasta dishes taken directly from the small port.

A very friendly family run hotel with a bus stop outside to enable easy access to all towns. Well positioned and enjoying superb views it makes a good base from which to discover the Amalfi Coast and Capri.
The hotel has been recently refurbished and boast a large conservatory for dining, the gardens are mature and boast various Mediterranean flowers such and Hibiscus, Bouganvillia and Jacaranda, lemons also grow freely throughout the gardens. Although the pool area is small the views from the deck and pool bar area are stunning all in all - good value for money in a wonderful location.

I have never been so disappointed with a holiday as I was when I visited Villa Lubrense. The location is beautiful and we would have had fantastic views over the Gulf of Naples and Versuvius but for the hazy skies. (I know I cannot blame Villa Lubrense for the weather - it was extremely hot though).
My friend and I did not arrive until about 11 pm and were taken into the "restaurant" to book in. We had to drag our cases down some windy steps to our rooms. The rooms were fine, although I later found out my bed had not been made up (I was too tired to care at that time). The towels were like glorified t-towels. I had to buy some proper towels the next day to dry myself.
What was so disappointing were the eating and drinking facilities. Breakfast consisted of 2 pieces of packet toast, 1 jam, 1 butter, 2 rolls, jug of orange juice in a plastic disposable cup and a jug of coffee every day. I know Villa Lubrense is only 3 star rating (although it wasn't cheap) but I would have thought we would have had a choice. All places I have been on the continent before have had a buffet menu.
There was no-where on site, apart from the reception which was only open when the properietors felt like it (up the hill) where we could get a drink or something basic to eat. Although it advertises a bar by the pool the hut was closed all the week we were there in June / July. I believe they had a function on on the Sunday and so we were able to get a drink by the restaurant about 6 pm but were asked to pay there and then as the bar man was going home. We never saw him again.
My friend had food poisoning (not from Villa Lubrense) but there was no-where on site to get a drink. As my friend was ill and in bed I stayed by the pool all day but there was no where to get a drink and there were no umbrellas and very little shade. The reception was too far from the pool to pop in to get a drink.
The pools were beautiful, the views were stunning, the grounds were lovely and very well kept and the hotel could be amazing if only there was somewhere to get a drink and some food.
