This was a ski holiday. The Skiing was excellent for beginners which the majority of our party was and the local ski resort of Hafjel was well organised and structured. What was excellent about this trip in particular was that one of our party was not skiing because she was pregnant (that was me) and there were so many activities for non skiers because Lillehammer had once hosted the Winter Olympics that I managed to entertain myself happily for 9 days. The Olympic museum and art gallery were both excellent. It was a real adventure taking the chair lift to the top of the Olympic downhill slope and watching the ski jumpers.
The chalet accommodation at Birkebeineren Hotel /Motel & Apartments was to a very high standard with sledging slopes nearby. The chalets were actually located in the Olympic park. There were some excellent restaurants (Nickers being our favourite). Beer and Wine very expensive compared with home. Nice pedestrian shopping street but not lots of shopping bargains.
Highlights were the train journey from the airport in Oslo to Lillehammer, easy and breathtaking views. Also New Years Eve fireworks as far as the eye could see in every direction from about 11pm till 1pm - awesome!!!
Apartments sleep 6, we had a great BA flight from Heathrow and fitted in a day trip to Oslo on our return. Norwegian railways very easy to use.
Note to anyone thinking of taking this excellent trip - having been on a dozen skiing trips now this was by far the coldest it has ever been. -15 degrees C everyday.
