Our week at the Sol Koralj Hotel in Umag was booked at the last minute in a desperate attempt to escape the rain for half-term, so we weren't necessarily expecting it to be perfect. However we had a great time and would highly recommend the hotel and its facilities.
With a 10-year old son and a teenage daughter to keep amused things could have been difficult, but we found there were lots of things to do. There are 14 tennis courts (small hire fee payable per hour), table tennis, mini-golf, bicycle hire, archery and lots of other things and our son was never bored - a big achievement. The pool area has plenty of sun beds although it is a salt-water pool and somewhat cold at this time of year. It is only a minute or so's walk through the pine woods to the man-made concrete beaches, also with sun-beds for hire. All very convenient for busy people who just want mainly to relax yet have some activities close to hand.
The food was all buffet-style but good and I'm sure there would be something for everyone. We got there too late to eat on our first night due to delays at Gatwick, but there are a handful of bars across the road that open and serve food till midnight. Our son had a birthday during our stay; we'd mentioned it briefly when booking, but on the morning a large plate of cakes and pastries wrapped in cellophane were delivered to his room courtesy of the hotel. The twin bedded rooms were large and we were given adjoining rooms with no problems.
We tend not to like family-style places where the entertainment is 'forced' upon you, and this was much more low-key and to our liking. Activities were available but you didn't feel pushed into it. There was a children's club available for those with younger children and a member of the entertainment team was always available during the day if you didn't have, say, a partner for tennis or table tennis. They were friendly and hard-working.
This is not a resort or hotel for those who like their holiday based around their night life, but the hotel did put on nightly shows in their 'entertainment room' and this was of a quaint and slightly old-fashioned nature, but somehow refreshing. The magician was the highlight for our son who still can't understand how some of the tricks were done. The folk dancers were also good.
The staff were attentive and carried out their work with a quiet dignity, although a few more people on the desk at busy times might have been a good idea.
The town of Umag, which is quite small but pretty, is a couple of miles away and there is a tourist 'train' between the hotel and the town, or a courtesy bus out of season.
All in all we would say this was a great place to spend a half-term week for a family who like to keep active but also relax by the pool or beach and who don't like lots of noisy nightlife!
