Great Value for Money
from JURNEYMAN
Have just spent a week at the Pical and my experience mirrors those of the majority of other reviewers. The hotel is certainly a bit dated in design and lacks some of the finish that you get in a modern building. However, the absence of the aesthetic bits is more than made up for by the warmth of the welcome and the friendliness of the staff. As previously mentioned the food is very good with a wide range of options for breakfast and evening meal all served on a buffet breakast and with much of it being cooked in front of you. You may not like all of it but if you cannot get a more than satisfying meal out of that restaurant then you will be hard to please indeed. The hotel is well placed for Porec and has a superb view from the front rooms (worth paying the extra for). For those of you with small children, do not be put off by previous comment - there were loads of children covering a wide range of age groups and they are all perfectly safe with normal supervision. Word of warning - don't use the Old Bar Cotton cafe. It is just off the square in town. They are rip off merchants and are laughing as they do it. Apart from that - enjoy. The place is really welcoming and unthreatening and if you use Pical as a base, I really don't think you could go wrong.

Having spent the past week at Hotel Pical I would most certainly "recommend". The hotel is mantained immaculatly clean. The rooms are a little small but are again maintained excellently with clean white towels and bed lined changed daily. There is no air conditioning but you can hire a fan which is sufficient to maintain room temperature. The shower within the bath was excellent in our room however it is quite steep to step out of therefore is not ideal for older people or very young. The food in the 1st floor restaurant is the "major" feature of this hotel, the selection of the buffet, quality of foods, cleaniness I would describe as "beyond belief" for value. The food caters for all tastes through superb selection, also all drinks on tap are "free", this includes Wines Red/White and Beer plus a wide selection of soft drinks. The saltwater pool area's large main pool and toddlers pool are again kept very clean, although no Lilo's are allowed in the pool. The animation team work hard to maintain a child friendly environment, with water areobics. Average Drink prices circa £1.90 for pint of beer, are no different to the Porec town area, which is approx 1km away, a walk along the seafront, or a noddy train ride. Porec town centre is very quaint cobbled streets with a harbour, with lots of nice bars and restaurants, if you like disco bars this is not the place for you, nightlife is very laid back. There is nightly entertainment laid on by the Hotel, within the pool area, which was quite good for the one night we seen it as all other nights we walked to the town. Overall if you require a value for money 3 star family orientated hotel and resort this is a great choice.
Okay but some problems

We just came back from Croatia where we did stay at Hotel Pical. We are a young couple with a 19 months baby.We did find Porec pleasant but overpriced. We do understand the locals are trying to make their money during july and august so it was fine.We didn't take the train as we enjoy walking( 25mn walk to porec). As the hotel well...we did expect to have that "east of europe look" so it didn't bother us.It was clean, so that the main thing.I will classify the hotel 2 stars exept the restaurant. The room was very small and I WILL NOT ADVISE THIS HOTEL FOR COUPLE WITH YOUNG CHILDREN.The balcony had massive gap on each side and we were on third floor.First we din't complain and put some pillows but the manager asked to remove them as they will become dirty!?!So we asked for an alternative and they put some string !!?? no comment...The paddling pool is too deep for young toddlers. They also have a metal drainage plate at 1 meter away from the paddling pool!It was 37 degres so imagine the temperature on this metal plate!!You could boil an egg!!And even being behind our daughter all time she managed to step on it!And got burnt!Blisters on every single toes!!The hotel and rep were very apologetic but we did make a formal complain as a young baby could leave his skin on it!!And for the restaurant Top marks!Very tasty and all food were prepared with fresh ingredients. The buffet offered a wide choice of european and croatian food.We did enjoy but again i don 't advise this hotel for young toddlers and people with mobility problems( steps everywhere, the bath tub is very high) we will go back to croatia but different location.

Cheapo Ryan air flights (£60) , cheapo taxi from the airport (£15 each, each way for four of us) and an above average hotel for£125 half board for five days.On arrival the hotel does have that Stalinesque look but inside its a huge, clean and friendly hotel with nightly entertainment provided by the staff (a little low rent but good fun after a few ales). Two swimming pools - all very civilised (mostly Saga from what I could make out - no headbangers though). Breakfast/evening meal was a delight - as much as you can eat and all fresh, some items (mostly seafood) cooked for you while you wait.Something for everyone and if they don't have it it probably doesn't exist. Situated by the beach (5 mins walk) and a weird little car train type thing stops outside the hotel every 40 mins and goes into town (10 mins or a 20 min walk).Porec town not bad - lodes of pplaces to eat/drink and a nice harbour with some very impressive yatchs when we were there. All in all very impressed with this set up and for a cheap five day break can't fault it - friendly staff & lodes of activitys on site (tennis - they love tennis, table tennis,Wimbledon type tennis coached by an ex Croatian tennis pro - Ivan somebody or other - looks dead old but was something special in his day so I was told).
The wonderful Hotel Pical

A couple in our early 50's, active & keen to see everything possible in the area, the hotel looked dated from the outside but was very clean, the reception staff couldn't do enough to help & were always friendly. We did have a bigger room on the 4th floor with an amazing north side view of the bay, an additional bonus as we had a very late half board booking at an amazing price! The buffet style restaurant plus choice & quality of the food was excellent, with wine, beer or soft drinks included in the evening meal, they would prepare lots of the dishes within the island serveries and gave a very friendly efficient service. The town of Porec is a gem of a town with bits of everything for visitors, Roman antiquities, a harbour with lots of boat trips, shops, bars and best of all not one british pub. The walk into town takes about 10 /15mins unless you've over indulged at dinner, then it can take at least 20mins, you can get the 1 trolley train in but then you miss out on the chance to stop for a quick drink at the beach bar below the Hotel Zagreb. The sea is clear & blue with a rocky or concrete platform edge with loads of places to sit & take in the views. The swimming/snorkeling is brilliant, you can walk or hire bikes & go for miles along the coast on either side of Porec. The worst thing about staying at the Hotel Pical is choosing what to eat and deciding what to do tommorrow. I hope it doesn't catch on to much & get spoilt as we'd love to go back again. The Croation people we met in the area were warm & friendly & were very enthusiastic in attempting to extend our phrase book Croation,! which we used at every opportunity. What a lovely place.
Was I in Porec or San Tropez?

We have just returned form 2 weeks in the Pical Hotel. The hotel and resort exceeded all expectations. I travelled in a group of under 26 year olds. The hotel was lovely. Restaurant was very modern and food great, front of house areas very comfortable, rooms need updating but bathroom nice size and clean. Well worth paying extra for sea view. Town was very picturesque. Like a mini Ibiza town with a few classy bars and restaurants. Beach (no sand) but excellent landscape to sunbathe. Prices were higher for food and drinks than we expected pretty similar to Uk prices. Walk into town from Hotel very pleasant. Highly recommended especially for those with a small yacht/boat in which to explore the coast. A++++++++++
a chefs delight
from biigbarb
just came back from a weeks stay in the pical, myself and my partner, who is a chef. rooms a bit on the small side and decor dated but decent size bathroom and balcony. staff all very friendly and helpful and most speak english. swimming pool is salt water[most are in the area] and can sting eyes if you like swimming underwater but very very clean with a large paved area and garden for sunbathing. we didnt have to fight for sunbeds either! there is some form of entertainment every evening but no disco-bars are shut by midnight and we saw no rowdiness or drunken behavior. what we will remember the pical for was the food-it was amazing-i think they catered for every taste. there was so much choice for breakfast and evening meal, serve yourself, with all local beer and wine free, it was fantastic, the menu changed every night and all freshly cooked. would recommend the pical for couples or families who want the quieter type of holiday and to explore croatia.

we wqnted a quick flight to a holiday destination this year after australia last year and as bristol are flying to croatia decided to give it a whirl- our fight time was 2 hours transfer time 45 mins so after leaving bristol at 7.30 a.m. we were at 11.30 a.m. drinking coffee in the bar at the hotel pical just outside porec. the outside of the hotel is dated but the inside makes up for that- our room wasnt the largest we have ever had but clean and well appointedwith an average sized bathroom and a wonderful view looking down towards the harbour the pool was saltwater so take some goggles if you think you may have a problem- evening meals were excellent with beer, wine and soft drinks all free of charge and unlimited all areas inside and out were clen and well maintained and all staff friendly and helpful hir e some bikes and take the coast road as far as you can comfortably go - its great fun- also the hydrafoil to venice takes two hours and then an extra hour going slowly thru the lagoon to moor up forgot to say that air conditioning has not reached any of the hotels ( the ones we checked ) so you may be advised to hire a fan and keep it on permanently will we go again and will we recommend- without a doubt
Great hotel

The previous reviewer must have been extremely hard to please as I've just come back from this hotel and, on reading the last reviewer's comments, was dreading it, but found it to be a wonderful hotel in a beautiful area - quiet, stunning scenery, lovely gardens, rooms were standard hotel size with balconies. The little train was just £1 and ran every 40 minutes to Porec from the hotel, but it was an easy walk if you missed it. I would recommend this hotel and resort to anyone. It was great. I went up the coast and down it and the Pical Hotel was the best. Can't wait to go back.

As a group of 11 we stayed at this hotel in July for our 2 week holiday, what a huge mistake! We had booked it through Thomson as we had used this tour operator for the past 15 years and had been extremely happy, however this was not to be the case this time. Thomson give it a four TTTT rating even though the official rating is a 3 star (which Thomson also mention) I would rate it as a 2 star (except the restaurant). When arriving in the hotel foyer it was like going back in time to the 1960s, very dull and depressing lighting and to say this hotel is seriously in need of a makeover is an undersatement. The bedrooms are extremely small and very grotty the view from the balcony not much better either (except sea view rooms). The activities i.e table tennis and mini golf were old and needed renewing, and by the way if you wear the 'wrong' trainers you are not allowed on the tennis courts which I found hilarious and disappointing for our party as it was hardly wimbledon. The salt water pools were not much better as the salt left your eyes extremely sore so almost unbearable to swim in. On to the entertainment, absolutely shocking, a male and female duet every single night singing the same play list so we new what song was coming next, this being entertaining to us because we would predict the next song, the music always dull and repetitive. We did have the odd show which quite frankly was unimpressive so most nights were spent on our balcony(looking out over 2 ugly sides of the building)playing cards - lovely. The one and only plus to this hotel is the food, you couldn't fault it. The general feeling with this hotel is that you are staying in a travel lodge there is no holiday atmosphere as it attracts passing travellers wishing to stay for a couple of nights possibly on route to a better quality and value for money hotel! The town in my opinion is not withing easy walking distance and to pay for a return journey on the noddy train for a party of 11 every evening to escape the inhouse entertainment was quite pricey. I definitely would not stay here ever again and would take the T ratings Thomson give (according to customer opinion) with a pinch of scepticism.
WE HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM A WEEKS HOLIDAY AT THE Hotel Pical in Porec. A lovely place, do not be fooled by the outside of the hotel. A lovely relaxing place, great sun sets and just a steady 15 min walk from the old village. The staff were very helpful, rooms basic but the... more
