The best Hotel on Crete
from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I have just returned from spending a week at the Rethymnon Porto Hotel. We could not praise it enough. Rethymnon is situated on the north of Crete and having visited the south of the island I feel it is by far the better resort. The hotel It is sighted opposite a very clean safe beach, and within easy walking distance of the old town with its shops, cafes and interesting historical sights. We could not fault the very friendly service, the very high quality and choice of the the meals, or the cleanliness of the spacious rooms. We have stayed in numerous hotels in various countries and comparing like with like the Porto really offers value for money. We have spent holidays on other Greek islands but this was our first visit to Crete and following this experience we will certainly be back next year to the Porto to be spoilt by their staff and explore more of this beautiful island. The only criticism we would make is there is too much choice at mealtimes, only joking. We would challenge anyone to fault the wonderful buffet the hotel provides at breakfast and dinner. Although we do not often visit the same place or hotel twice after staying at the Porto and touring this beautiful island we have already decided to break a habit of a lifetime and return next year to the Porto in Rethymnon
Excellent Hotel!!

Just returned from a week's stay in Crete at the Porto Rethymnon Hotel. I chose it after reading the comments on this website and was in no way disappointed. It really is difficult to find fault with the hotel. All the previous glowing comments about the quality of the food, rooms, staff, location ete...etc...all proved to be correct. The thing that impressed the most was the food. I haven't been to another hotel where i can remember such a wide selection of food of the quality that this Hotel serves. It is truly excellent. We would certainly return without any question.
Superb hotel in superb location

We visited the Porto Rethymo just before Easter with two kids (7 and 4). We were highly impressed by the staff, the cleanliness, the breakfast buffet (didn't try the restaurants for lunch/dinner), size of family room, view from balcony. Beach was very clean, sand is perfect, water shallow, showers and sunloungers etc provided, and even in early April we had some days of sunbathing and swimming - water temperature "refreshing" for northern Europeans, way too cold for the locals! Not only is the beach only 20 metres away, but the Old Town is a 10-15 minute stroll. Very highly recommended indeed. Kids loved it and so did we.

We emailed the hotel prior to departure, after reading some reports about poor room allocation. We requested a sea view room on a high floor and that is exactly what we got! The food was first class and all the staff very friendly/helpful. Although the swimming pools are small (a fact we were aware of when booking the holiday), the beach is just across the road. With free sunbeds, parasols, tables and towels, the facilities could not be faulted. Unfortunately the blue flag beach/sea was not so pleasant. There were times when we found ourselves swimming amongst sewage & rubbish (including large pieces of wood). We did email the 'Blue Flag' organisation on returning to England, but they were not interested in our complaint. Going to Crete towards the end of the season was a bit of a let down entertainment wise. Many of the bars had already shut down or were in the process of doing so. In addition many boat trips/canoe hire, etc had ceased. To end on a positive note - the local people are wonderful. We drove into the mountains and were invited to join a local family for lunch and a few glasses of rakki, which they were in the process of making. To sit out in their garden, enjoying the magnificent views and trying to converse, when only one member of their family spoke English & we spoke virtually no Greek, was amazing!
Excellent Hotel

Have just got back from a 10 night stay at the Porto Rethymno. This hotel is excellent, the food, accommodation, staff and animation staff, cleaners everything about this hotel was excellent. I went with my husband and our two teenage children aged 14 and 17. For myself and my husband it was a great holiday unfortunately there was nothing for the teenagers to do as it seemed that the time we were there the hotel was full of familes of younger children or peope of 40 years plus so my son did not have the opportunity to meet someone to go clubbing with but nevertheless they enjoyed it. We travelled with Thomson which I won't do again the rep at the hotel we don't even know her name we did not get a welcome evening we only spoke to her once and she did not even seem to care who we were. Thomson were the only bad part of our holiday but otherwise I would definitely recommend this hotel when we arrived we had booked two twin rooms but one of our rooms had had a plumbing problem so they put us for the first night in a suite overlooking the pool. Our rooms were ready the next day but because we all like the room we were given we asked if we could stay the staff could not do enough for us there was no problem at all in doing this. You must visit this hotel.
Relax at the porto

Just returned from a two week stay at the porto rethymno with two children and two adults. One hour transfer from Iraklio ( Industrial Centre ). We had a massive room ( family ) over looking the swimming pool with tv sat / air con / hair dryer etc. Food was superb with lots of choice for everybody and a couple of themed nights a week. Chania was fourty five mins by car. Agios Nikolaos was two hours. Phaistos was one and a half hours and Knossos was just over an hour. The hotel had a busy road outside front entrance which you must cross for the beach but just be careful with young children, drivers don't stop at the crossing. Beach was the best we discovered all holiday.Soft sand, shallow entrance. Old port area in Rethymnon was a fifteen min stroll after dinner and was well worth the exercise. The area came alive after eleven o'clock with music and dance. Great Holiday and friendly people.
Reasons to be Cheerful!

Contrary to some reports we had read in holiday reviews, with regards to Heraklion airport chaos, we arrived at Chania on our Thomson flight to find the exact opposite - well organised and efficient. We promptly collected our luggage and cleared the terminal building in next to no time for the one hour air conditined coach trip to the Rethymno resort. The Hotel Porto Rethymno is all that the brochure says, central to restaurants , mini-markets and tavernas, it is spotlessly clean with excellent air conditioning and food choice. It is also within walking distance of the beautiful old town of Rethymno, with its narrow, shop filled streets, impressively ornate churches, museums and picturesque venetian harbour. The beach opposite the hotel is sandy, clean and perfectly safe except on the breeziest of days when the waves come crashing ashore. Lifeguards and a green/red flag system indicate the occasional unsafe bathing periods. The Rethymno resort also has a promenade with wooden bench seating where you can rest and enjoy the views of the beach and ferry port. The restaurants and bars on the seafront benefit in the evening from any welcomed, cooling seabreeze. Following an evening stroll along the promenade, call in at 'The Entasis' - a friendly, clean cocktail bar close to the Hotel Porto Rethymno. It is noted for its quiet and relaxing atmosphere, where every hour is a happy hour - quality refreshments guarenteed courtesy of Mario, Maria and Manoli. Yammas! Typical of many holiday resorts a small road train takes you on a thirty minute relaxing, and at times rather bumpy site seeing trip around the old town harbour and fortress areas, for a 5 Euro adult fair (hang onto your sunglasses!) Longer trips to the monastry of Agia Irini and the ravine of Mili are also organised for 15Euro and 20Euro respectively. Would we return to this resort? - Yes, Rethymno people are friendly, chatty and kind which helped make this holiday special.
Perfect Porto Rethymnon!
from Valal
Just returned from a wonderful week at the Porto Rethymnon Hotel, Crete. Very helpful and polite staff, good food - selection and quantity and rooms spacious and very clean. Busy road to cross to beach but sun loungers and umbrellas free! Well worth taking the trip to Southern Crete, incorporating the visit to Plakitas and the Prevali Monestery - extremely scenic and interesting made even more valuable by the knowledge and expertise of the wonderful guide. Would definitely recommend this hotel - location quite a distance from airport so next time would arrange a taxi rather than holiday companies coach which drops off at many other hotels before getting to Porto Rethjmnon. All in all an excellent holiday - also nice shoe shops and jewellery shops in old town if you are that way inclined!
Our third visit to this hotel. Mostly very friendly and helpful staff, high standard of food especially breakfast. It's worth paying extra for a superior room (ie sea view)because what they don't advertise is the fact that you can eat at no extra charge each night in the... more
