Novotel Leipzig Hotel Reviews
" POW camps and Christmas markets in... "
Submitted By: Mr D Newman
POW camps and Christmas markets in the snow!
A long weekend in a crisp, cold and snowy December. We flew to Leipzig for £3.99 each (a family of four), and effortlessly picked up a hire car at the airport.
There were two great highlights - a visit to the infamous Colditz Castle - an enigma from my youth (you could never go there before the iron curtain came down). Being the only visitors there on a quiet December day, we were given complete individual attention by a highly experienced tour guide for 2 hours. A 30 year dream comes to fruition.
And then stollen, gluwein and fantastic gifts in a gorgeous Christmas market, in the old town square, at night. Beautiful sights, tempting smells, and lots of friendly and relaxed company (it would be raucous and crass in England).
The hotel is fine (Novotels always are) - it served as a great base for a packed weekend - very memorable for all of us.

Leipzig in December. Crisp, cold air. Some snow. A totally different feel (Leipzig is not so westernised as some parts of Germany, so fewer brand names dominate the high streets.
The best is the Christmas market. Bustling, but friendly, the aroma of mulled wine, gluwein, and a myriad of fried foods permeate the gorgeous marketplace at night. Dozens upon dozens of market stalls selling a vast array of goods, Christmas decorations, food, drinks and many many other things. A gorgeous traditional night out and one that gets even the older kids in a fantastic festive spirit - beats the local shopping centres with piped music and gaudy decorations.
And if you get time, pop over to Colditz Castle - 20 minutes by car - to experience the infamous world war 2 POW camp - a treat for anyone with even the remotest historical interests.
