" My partner Dan and I went to Bahia... "
Submitted By: Ms Z Moody
My partner Dan and I went to Bahia Park for 2 weeks in October 2005 and couldn't fault it. We took my 2 older children and our baby. My daughter is 9 and my son is 4 and they had a wonderful time. The kids club gave us a break and the kids made lots of friends, we even swapped addresses with 1 family and have kept in touch.
Mari, the kids rep was brilliant. Every night she would get on stage with the kids and get them all dancing and playing games, we already miss her. She also does a very entertaining game of Bingo, as I found out, having won a full house I found myself dancing like an octopus round the terrace, although Dan’s was better as when he won he had to do ballet (cue lots of running to the toilet trying not to wet myself.) My parents also came with us which helped as it meant Dan and I could get time alone without the children.
The food at the hotel restaurant was lovely. The kids lived off pizzas and ice-cream. They do a lovely home-made chocolate cake(don't they mum!!) and the breakfasts are equally nice. Gines(pronounced-iness) the waiter was great, always willing to help and great with the kids too.
The beach is nice, although with nearly 200 steps to get there it's quite exhausting. There is however, a train which stops outside the hotel which will take you to the beach for 6 euros.(about 4.50.)
The weather was nice, not so hot that you sweat, but hot enough to not need a jacket. We were worried about the baby but we needn't have been. He was 7 months old and was happy everywhere we went. He had an obsession with spoons at cafes and we now have a collection of them in our kitchen. Oops!!
I would definitely recommend the Salamandra restaurant, about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. For 15 euros(about 11 quid) per adult you get a three-course meal, plus a half bottle of wine each, plus coffee and liqueur after your meal. We came out very bloated and quite light-headed!! There is also a kids play area there so the kids didn't get bored while waiting for their food.
The kids enjoyed the swimming pool, although its quite cold as it's not heated(as Dan found out when he dived in.)
There is never a shortage of things to do(I am the QUEEN of mini-golf), and the entertainment finishes at 10.30pm which is good as then the kids are more willing to go to bed if nothing going on.
The supermarket is 10 minutes up the road and will deliver your shopping free to your hotel room within a couple of hours.
I would recommend the Bahia park complex to families with young children, although teenagers may get bored as there isn't much for them apart from a couple of pool tables. Overall we had a fabulous holiday and would consider maybe going back..

My wife, three children (7, 5 and 3 Yrs) and I are just back from a fantastic two week holiday in Calan Porter, 19th Sep to 3rd Oct 2005. Stayed at the Bahia Park Apartments, Apartment No. 31, which were first class. Our friends, the Martins, and their children were at No. 32. Our apartment was clean and modern (best I’ve seen) with two balconies, one of which saw the sun most of the day, (sorry Paul & Andrea), and the other a view of the pool and the entertainment stage. The poolside was slippy which kept you on your toes with the children. The in house restaurant served good food and had a large variety of local dishes. Paul (I think) will probably miss the Marina Mussels. It also had a good deal for a half board option. Juan at the bar could do with smiling once and a while (and pouring full pints), and Jesus the waiter well think of Manuel on Faulty Towers. He was a scream. Kept muttering to himself when things didn’t go well when taking orders and sorting out tables for you. (I know nothing, I’m from Barcelona, Que, Que). The table for ten through him off his stride, and don’t ask for champers (well cheap cider) as you will get sangria. I don’t remember the name of the young waitress, but she was very nice, polite and couldn’t do enough for you.
I have to thank Kristy and Mari, the entertainers at Bahia, for all the excellent entertainment for the children. They were on the go from noon until 11.00ish at night, and they really got them involved with their mini disco. Although I wasn’t too keen on being a “Cheeky Girl” though. (long story and Paul’s got the photos, oh no!!). The kids club was well run and was just across the road. It had a kiddie’s park located behind it. Only our eldest son went but he really enjoyed it. (Also ideal for the teenagers to get a way from it in the evening, as I found out one night, oops sorry). The nearest supermarkets were a 10 minute walk away which kept you fit, and the hub of Calan Porter another two or three minutes further on. I can recommend the Euro Spar for the cheap beer, San Miguel or Estrella Damm, but some of other items are expensive. My daughter took ill and only ate soup. 2 euros for Heinz soups - ouch.
As a whole Calan Porter is a wonderful place for that family holiday. The bars and restaurants we went to were first class, especially the El Salamandra. Although Sam & Eddies did a mean Sunday roast, recommend the lamb, mmmmm. The Irish Bar has the football and an internet connection for that coupon which might win you a fortune. The beach is a bit of a hike with small children, 190 odd steps to climb down, (some of them quite steep) but well worth it. Nice place to get some sun and then chill out at the bar with a beer in your hand. (I can still taste it) Pedalos are only 10 Euros for an hour, bargain! (the wee boy got a bit frightened over deeper water - Jessie) Still didn’t catch any fish with that “invisible” green net. I think the trout seen it coming back in Scotland. We tried the caves. They were quite impressive with some spectacular views out to Sea. Although the drop over the side kept me alert with the children. Met some un-cultured gentleman (from west of Scotland I think) in the Irish Bar the same night who described them as a toilet. Disagree totally. What else can I say, get booking now or miss out.

" We took our two daughters, aged 8 and... "

We took our two daughters, aged 8 and 1½ to the Bahia Park Apts. We had specifically asked for a low door and we got put at the top of the block so the climb up the stairs with baby and buggy wasn’t to amusing. Our older daughter enjoyed herself by the pool and meeting new friends but we couldn’t take out eyes of the little one for one second. The pool area was very slippery. On our first night there we were having a meal in the restaurant and where our table was situated there was a small ledge. I had went to pick up the baby after she fell and went back to my seat but unknown to me someone had pushed my chair further back than I'd imagined and with baby in arms fell rights back onto the concrete path. Luckily I only got away with a few bumps and scratches but it could have been a lot worse.
Despite all this we hired a car for 5 days because it was the only way we felt we could go to the other resorts that were a bit more livelier.
We won’t be returning in a hurry.
The Bahia Park apartments were just lovely.

They were very clean and just as stated in the brochure. The restaurant served lovely food and the workers were very nice and always willing to help in any way they could. The staff in general were very polite and wouldn’t let you lift a finger. The pool was ever so clean as was the pool area.

The children’s entertainers were fantastic and did their jobs well. The evening entertainment was top notch and suited to all of the family. The only down side I could see was that if you have small children as I did the walking up and down hills could be a problem. My 6 year old was ok but my 4 year old didn’t like it much.

The kids club was a god send and very well run with wonderful young happy people taking great care of the kids.
Overall a fantastic place to go with your family. I am already looking into booking for 2006 ;o)

A fantastic holiday the best holiday I have ever been on.
You do not have to get up at the crack of dawn to get a sunbed.
I stayed in Apartment 23 with my Family this apartment overlooked the pool and if you wanted a swim you could just hop over and Jump in -- Very Cold Though "Sharp Shock Treatment"
The Two Entertainers Pablo and Alfredo where fantastic all the kids where entertained ALL day and when they weren’t there was a fantastic kids club in a Villa across the road from the complex,
A bit hilly though
Overall a fantastic holiday , I will hopefully return at a future date.

" We went to the Bahia apartments for... "

We went to the Bahia apartments for the last week in May and the First week in June.
It was raining the day we arrived and the weather not so good for the next two days, but after that it was nice and hot.
We had a three bed roomed apartment which was very damp, the rep came and felt how damp the beds were and brought us a heater which didn’t do much considering how large the apartment was. By the end of the holiday the kids had nasty chesty coughs.
We were unable to open one of the bedroom windows because if we did everyone in the bar area just stared straight in, and because it was so close to the bar we could not get to sleep because of people sat out till late drinking, even though the bar closed at midnight people brought their own drinks out.
Then we were woken early in the morning by the cleaners sweeping the bar and the steps to the apartment.
The food was ok nothing special, except the paella which was fantastic.
Be careful with your drinks bill as we seemed to get charged different amounts, and when we challenged this it was soon sorted by the waiter. Note: he wasn’t the one doing the fiddling it was the man behind the bar. I had been warned about him by one entertainers.
One of the entertainers Pablo was fantastic in fact he made the holiday, without him it would have been a total disaster, however I happen to know he’s no longer there either.
The minigolf was rubbish once the kids had been on once they didn’t want to go on again.
It was a hard walk to the beach and the shop and believe me even longer walking back.
All the restaurants seemed to have the same food, and very expensive and we couldn’t get a hamburger or pizza from anywhere during siesta time, that goes for the hotel as well.
Anyway I wouldn’t go back to the Bahia apartments or to Cala n Porter for that matter, and believe me I'm not a fussy person I usually do simply Greece and I really do believe in making the most of what you’ve got, but this holiday was the worst I’ve had.
10/10 for Pablo and his nightly entertainment
5/10 for the apartments and resort.
It was our first family holiday and had specifically asked Thomsons to recommend somewhere as I didn’t know what I was looking for! - based on this I was actually quite disappointed.
Although it wasn’t too far from the beach - it was extremely hilly and not easy to get around with a pushchair. My youngest child had very little to do apart from going in the pool.
Yes the pool.... now that’s another problem - we actually only saw it being cleaned twice whilst we were there on our 14 day trip. So really it was no surprise when me, my husband and youngest child got so ill we had to get the doctor out.
On the good side, my oldest child had a fantastic time - the kids club was fantastic and the mini discos every night was a huge hit - in fact we are still singing and dancing along to the songs now. The reps were great, and kept them well entertained with daytime activities as well.
I wouldn’t go back- although I feel many of the reasons being as it was the end of the season and not much effort put into looking after the place. The maids did a good job but the pool area was quite dirty.
I know many people that went to this resort in peak season and the holiday was excellent- I think it depends very much on the time of year.
