Atlantis was a massive disappointment from start to finish. A hugely overrated resort which costs the earth and does not live up to expectations. The brochure pictures never seem to show the Beach or Coral Towers which is not surprising as they are both badly in need of a face lift. We stayed in a room at the Beach Tower, at a cost of $310 US a night but were disappointed to find that our hard-earned cash had been spent on a view of an air conditioning vent right outside the balcony, surrounded by empty fag packets and someone’s abandoned pants (I kid you not). The hairdryer didn't work (not surprising as the socket was hanging out of the wall) and it took 3 phone calls and 6 hours to get another one brought to the room. The mini bar lock was broken and when we got someone to come and fix it we were delighted by the sight of a half eaten chocolate bar inside. The room in general was clean but tatty and the hammering of refurbishments elsewhere started at 8am every weekday. The restaurant prices were very steep- our average evening meal was £140 for two, without wine. Although the food was fine, it definitely wasn't special enough for us to feel we were getting value for that amount of money. The restaurant staff ranged from quite pleasant to downright rude and seemed to be jamming reservations in on a very tight schedule all evening- we were told off for being 10 minutes EARLY for our reservation, never mind late! Bar staff too were variable in attitude- a 15% gratuity is automatically added to every food and drink bill, so they seem to not care about actually earning it through pleasantness. The Royal Tower building was impressive, the pools were well maintained, the beach was beautiful, but not nice enough to justify the price we paid for this holiday. At reception complaints were not met by much surprise or interest- they seem to have heard it all before.

A mega-hotel in size but not in quality.
Admittedly we were there over the Easter school holidays but the facilities were unable to cope with the numbers of people. It was impossible to get a sun-lounger unless you bagged one at 6am. We spent 10 days in the resort but even booking on our first day there (we were not allowed to book before arrival), we were unable to get into any of the decent restaurants until our last night - they were all fully booked.
A spectacular hotel, lots of attention to detail but overall poor because we had to go off-site every night to get food; the selection of restaurants locally is not that great and Nassau itself feels rather run down and poor.
A good holiday but not a place to go back to.

This resort is fantastic, lots to do and see. The hotel is based on the Lost City of Atlantis so there is lots of water. There are lots of aquariums, waterslides and beaches. If you want just one holiday in the Bahamas then definitely come here.
There are around 20 restaurants in the resort and also snack bars. We booked a Meal Plan which included breakfast and dinner in a selection of the restaurants. I would say overall this resort is expensive but is worth it for a one off holiday.
We also saw Woody Harrelson as I believe lots of filming goes on in the resort.

The hotel is built on the sea bed and based on the story of Atlantis. I could not fault the design or layout, comparable to places like jumeirah beach in Dubai. We had dinner in an opulent restaurant while watching fish and sharks swimming. During evenings we took walks through the underground maze with treasures and also played tennis by moonlight. The golf course was particularly idyllic-the final hole was lit up (at night) by a candlelit pagoda. There was also access to a private beach and there was a slide in the pool area for us to swim with sharks separated by a pane of glass [and at the time the proprietors had acquired more land and were building a water theme park]. We also visited uninhabited islands by power boats and fed sharks and other fish. We also hired motorised scuba mopeds which are a lot more user friendly than donning the whole gas tank thing!! There is also a casino built in the hotel complex which is just like a mini-Vegas. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and there were hardly any children there!!
The down side : although we visited Nassau it was quite intimidating due to the sheer poverty 98% of Bahamas income is from tourism so it felt safer to stay on the resort. The hotel was extortionate in price i.e. in one restaurant breakfast was $30 but to be fair this did include smoked salmon, champagne etc. It was mainly populated by Americans and honeymooners so there wasn’t really a great mix of people. I also wish there was more of a nightlife I was bored towards the end of the week. It was expensive about £2500 for a week not including spending money but at the same time it was breathtaking and also bear in mind there are one set of rooms that cost $25 000.00 with a minimum 3 day stay and that was fully booked until the following year!! Tiger Woods was there when we went.
I would highly recommend it as it really has to be seen, so if you are feeling flush, missing the sun and looking for a laid back holiday Atlantis is the place to go.

My Husband booked this hotel as part of a surprise honeymoon, I was blown away when he showed me the details just two days before our wedding. We could hardly wait to spend our 11 nights on Paradise Island. However when we arrived we unfortunately was faced with one disappointment after another.
Our check in time on the day we arrived was 3pm, we didn't actually arrive until 7.30pm and our room was not available. We had to wait a further 40 minutes. We were tired from traveling and just wanted to get settled in our room and freshen up before dinner. When we did finally get the key to the room it was miles from the reception and we were left to take our own bags, even though they do have porters.
The room was in the East Tower which must be the smoking section of the building (even though the hotel will say that it isn't) the room stunk of cigarettes, so much so that the maid, the hotel sent up with air freshener told us to ask for another room as there was nothing that she could do to remove the smell. We were in the room for half an hour as it took them this long to find another room, we both stunk of cigarettes when we left it. They did move us to another room, but we had to go back to reception with our cases to pick up the new key (again we had no help) The second room had a fantastic view but a slight damp smell, we no longer had they energy to complain so we settled, but believe me in a hotel that costs that amount of money we most definitely should not have had to settle.
Unfortunately that was not the end of the bad luck, or bad service. After four days our room smelt so damp that all our clothes had started to smell too. We phoned customer service who said that they would deal with it, in the mean time the battery died in the lock on the door to our room. This would not have been an issue if it had been resolved, but of course it wasn't so we spent two days having to go to reception to ask for them to open the door, each time we did this we waited at least half an hour outside the room for them to send someone up.
The maids also had no access to the room so it wasn't made up for two days. We reported the fault 6 times in 48 hours, and nothing was done. In the end we could take it no more and demanded that we got moved to another room, this was at 10am on the third day of the issue. They gave us another room but told us that we had to vacate the room we were in by 12pm and the other room wouldn't be available until 3pm, a total joke.
I could go on and on about this hotel and the disasters we had so below is the short list:
There was bits of broken glass in the bottom of my glass of water, I discovered this when I sucked some up through a straw into my mouth, the waitress said I'm sorry. My husband we believe had food poisoning as he had severe sickness and diarrhea for three days (it was five days into the holiday and we had only eaten at the hotel). My hairdryer didn't work over there so I had to use the hotels, this broke the first time I used it, they never fixed it, my husband phoned reception in the end and told them to bring a new one up straight away. This was at 8pm, we got one at 11pm. Most of the water slides and plunge pools were out of action.
The hotel is full of tourists from other hotels so the residents have to wear stupid wrist bands to be able to use the pool area, they have to be worn constantly so you end up with a nice white band round your wrist. We saw cockroaches in the restaurant area in the Royal Towers.
The hotel was meant to inform us that we were to check our cases in with them on the day of departure and that they get taken to the airport ahead of us. The coach picked us up 1 hour and 30 minutes before our flight causing loads of problems at the airport because no one from Alantis had checked in bags. This made it very late to be checking in and the staff there were not happy about it, and took it out on the passengers.
Everything is over priced, the hotel makes no effort to introduce the local culture, it is just like being in an USA shopping mall for your holidays. There is very little evening entertainment, one man sings the same songs out of tune every night. This is not a hotel that we would recommend, and we will not be returning.
