A 60th birthday disaster
from A TripAdvisor Member
I decided to surprise my partner with a 60th bithday surprise weekend at the camelot hotel, what a surprise we had. the room was small and grubby , the service was non existant, thankfully we had a fine dinner in tintagel due to the hotel chef i quote having a bad back and not at work.every where you looked the owners paintings and litrature where in abundance!! the breakfast was a joy to behold!! one rasher of undercooked bacon one undercooked sausage baked beans undercooked fried egg and wait for it a lump of cheese!! all served on a cold plate watched over by the owners labrador dog in the dining room. I complained to the manager and the waitress no response they must be used to it ? I have written to mr mappin and mr stourton no reply. Thanks to them my partners 60th birthday will be rememberd for all the wrong reasons
Our first trip to Camelot
from A TripAdvisor Member
My fiance had grown up in London, and had never been to Cornwall. I could see he was torn between wanting to be touched and delighted that I had booked us a surprise trip and feeling rather dubious about Cornwall. Do they have TVs then? He still cant quite believe he fell for a Westcountry gal! I had booked us a Bed and Breakfast in Polzeath. On arrival at the bed and breakfast we couldn't believe we had got the right place, it was an ordinary shaped and sized house! We were shown through the house to a tiny bedroom in the attic, with no ensuite and two single beds. I tried to talk to the owner and say that I had booked a double with a view!! The owner tried to say I was lying, and my fiance had had enough and we left.. It was 4pm, and we had nowhere to go! I sort of remembered that Bude was quite sizeable, and we decided to head up the coast in search of a nice hotel, with a bar and rooms with windows! Having been lost innumerable times, and driven past countless bed and breakfasts we just hadn't liked the look of, the sun began to get low in the sky, and the wind picked up. We were tired and hungry, and starting wonder if we were going to end up just giving up on our special weekend and driving back to Exeter, where we lived. I don't know what made me head in to Tintagel. Sam asked where we were going, I said I didn't know, and he laughed! We drove up through the high street, and both commented on the little greystone buildings and welcoming pubs, we instantly liked Tintagel, though neither of us had been before. We drove out the other side of the main street, and passed a few bed and breakfasts, but neither of us commented or suggested trying them... We rounded a corner and suddenly the cliff tops and sea were spread out before us, and there, a completely unexpected and rather surreal castle rose up from the cliff top to greet us. We were both dying to get closer just to have a look. As we passed through the gates my fiance noticed, look it's a hotel! It will be too expensive for us though wont it? Oh lets just have a look! We were both dying to see inside, we wanted to see the round table! As we went through the swing doors, we were met by glorious colour from impressionist art which fills the walls, the rich warmth of the Arthurian lounge, the ornate woodwork, I still have the photograph I took of the unusual pencil crayon toilet seat in the ladies bathroom! We approached reception and asked if there were any vacancies, the lady behind the counter was just like the place, warm calming and welcoming. She said that there were no standard rooms left, only a four poster bedroom, which was above our budget. We looked at each other, silently trying to communicate the question, what shall we do? At that moment the lady said as it was late in the day, we could have the four poster room for the same price as the standard room, and handed us the keys. Delighted elated and unable to believe our good luck we raced up the grand and imposing staircase like children. As we entered the bedroom we were met with full length windows leading on to a small balcony. We dumped our bags and opened the French windows, we stepped outside onto the balcony where were we met with something for each sense. The ruins of Arthur's castle and the mighty drop to the all consuming Atlantic met our eyes, the wind in our hair, the salty air billowing up our noses and the crashing of the waves whipped up into a frenzy by the growling wind filled our ears. Sam and I will never forget the first time we laid eyes on Camelot. In desperation under a darkening sky we found this majestic castle, and somehow, Camelot draws us back to these four walls again and again. Since coming to Camelot that first time, we have had our fair share of holidays, but no matter where we go in the world, something will always periodically bring us back to the Castle, our Castle. We have been back twice since that first time, and we will be back again in December! The moment we head onto the A30 with Tintagel in mind, all the usual constraints fall away, and for a few days we truly escape. Without that ability to get away from all the day to day stress and worry, we would surely not survive. Camelot keeps us sane, and we will always hold it, the place we found by accident against the odds, close enough to our hearts to make it the first place we think of if we can get away for a night or two....
Enchanting

My partner and I spent a long weekend at Camelot Castle last weekend, it was absolutely beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful, John Mappin (owner) made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and on meeting Ted Stourton (artist in residence) we felt almost part of the family! The outside of the hotel needs some work but it appeared this was being done even when we arrived. The rooms are dated although we were assured they are being renovated (we did witness one room being redone while we were there, and its no cheap "changing rooms" 2 day job!) The rest of the hotel was spectacular, the dining room was grand and decorated in a period style, the entrance hall with King Arthurs round table was amazing, the bar has 2 amazing leather armchairs in (we debated fitting them in the car but gave up) On our first night we were entertained with a DVD in the bar and it felt very homely and friendly. We really appreciated that the hotel does not "cash in" on the King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table stuff - it is highly visible in the rest of the (very beautiful) village of Tintagel and it didnt need overdoing here too, although it may be considered a bit too understated by some. There are a small number of staff who were extremely friendly and had no difficulty in serving us while we were there, although I could imagine at the height of summer more staff are required (and may be employed - couldnt comment!) The art work around the hotel is absolutely amazing, Ted has an amazing talent for not only painting but also singing! I would highly recommend John Mappins CD "Ripples of Peace" as a memory from the hotel, we listened to it the whole way home and it made us smile. Overall, we loved it! It was beautiful and friendly, and we are already saving up to return next year!!!
Warning: Stay Away

Where to begin... Room was horrendous... toilet and shower looked like they'd been made out of an old wardrobe and were freestanding in the bedroom! 8am in the morning... no running water, Sanilav toilet won't flush.... walked out ins disgust in the morning and after agreement informed the reception staff we would not be paying to stay in a room with no basic sanitation or running water, and booked into another hotel. Got home to find they had made an unauthorised transation for the room... still awaiting the outcome. In Summary they ruined our break, and have caused no end of stress. One other point, all of the "good" feedbacks points on this are clearly added by the hotel.... stay away you have been warned!
Magical place!

My husband and I stayed at Camelot Castle Hotel and had a wonderful 3 night stay. Granted, that was over a year ago, and I'm horrified to see some of the terrible reviews that were recently written. I'm not sure if perhaps the hotel has switched hands, or if something major has changed? When we were there, it was absolutely lovely! Patrick (who is the barkeep, manager, conceirge, etc) is the most enjoyable person to talk to - and he can make any drink that you want (he is not some daft individual who does not know what goes into a gin and tonic). The views are magnificent and yes, plenty of famous people have stayed there. The rooms are clean and the staff was very attentive. The decor may be a little dated, and the bathroom facilities are a little small - but this is not the Holiday Inn!! If you want to stay in a place that has no personality, then stay at a major hotel in London and save yourself the drive to Tintagel. We travel all over the word and stay in all kinds of places. Tintagel is truly beautiful and the Camelot Castle Hotel really puts you in the mood for the views. We would definitely stay there again!
The horror, the horror.

Awful hotel. Creepy, shoddy, pebble-dashed horror. Staff rude, food terrible, decor spectacularly dreadful. And those paintings everywhere - they're terrible. The bedrooms are rubbish too - and our "bathroom" was a prefab in the corner of the room. Avoid. You'd be better off burning your money and staying in a tent.
Never again!

My wife and I stayed here for one night! The place is very strange and did not suit us at all. I got better service in the army. To get a drink in the bar I had to tell the bartender/portier/consierge/manager (yes it was all the same person) what was in a gin tonic, I then pointed out a whisky instead. We did not dear to eat there so we ate in the village. All the locals we spoke to laughed when telling we were staying at the Castle. The bathrooms are the kind used in cruise ships, built in the 70's and 80's. Two things were good: 1. It was clean 2. The view Considering these two good things, go and see the view and the suroundings. The clean room you can find both cheaper and nicer anywhere else.
Not bad, but not great either

I must admit I booked a weekend at the Camelot Hotel through their website without checking on how good it was. On seeing some of the reviews on this website I was dreading it. I thought that I would give my opinion on it though to try and help others. 1. Yes the view is absolutley fantastic. I don't think you will find a better location in Britain for a hotel in terms of the view. It is truley amazing. 2. The Hotel's facilities are basic. The bathrooms are incredibly small in the rooms, but you do have an option of usuing the much larger baths that are situated in the corridor. 3. The rooms are a bit tatty and sparse, but they were clean. 4. The service I had from the staff was great. I was upgraded for free to the four poster room. They also called me to tell me that my girlfriend left her phone in the room almost straight after we left. 5. The breakfast was very nice. 6. The atmosphere in the bar was almost non-existent. We were normally the only ones in there and it repeatedly played a 10 minute promotional video of the resident artist at full volume. All in all, it wasn't that bad, but it wasn't great either. Tintagel itself is very nice, but a bit of a tourist trap. I reccomend the King Arthurs Arm's for the pub with the most atmosphere. Mainly though, hire a car and explore the local fishing villages for a better time(the Port William Inn down the road does fantastic food - you will need a car to get there though).
Magical Camelot

I would like to share with other travelers, my incredible experience of staying at Camelot Castle (Hotel) in Tintagel, Cornwall, England. Drawn to the mystical and mythical site of King Arthurs birth place, I located a "magical" place right next to the famous site. This magical place was called Camelot Castle. I stayed an unplanned two days at the hotel, where I enjoyed breath-taking scenery from the hotel windows, and received five star service from the management and staff. I was also lucky to enjoy the hotel's wonderful Art work, grand furnishings and sumptuous guest room with its own private balcony. I felt very lucky to "chance" upon the hotel and taste a little (two days was really not enough time) of the "Camelot" experience. Ironically, I never did reach my planned destination--but I can whole- heartedly recommend you stay at the Camelot Castle Hotel...

Interesting--go with an open mind. Eclectic owners, who are quite visible.
My husband organised a three night stay at this hotel to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Unusually for him he did not research the reviews, comments of others who had stayed here. However, our room was lovely, huge comfortable four poster bed, beautiful bathroom with... more
