I don’t suppose I'll enjoy a holiday as much as this for a very long time. I honestly can’t rate this hotel high enough. So many pro's and so very few cons.
The Hotel - It’s set up quite high in the mountain overlooking the sea. All the apartments are overlooking the Atlantic between the main beach and the amazing Amadores beach just around the mountain.
It’s just a five minute walk to the Europa Centre, and a three Euro taxi ride to either the main Commercial Centre in the centre of Puerto Rico, or Amadores Beach.
The service at the hotel was first class, with all the staff very friendly and the apartments were cleaned inside and out about three or four times per week.
The Room - The apartments are a decent size, with a separate bathroom with all the amenities (power shower, large sink area, toilet, etc), and a separate bedroom. The bedroom isn’t so big, but big enough. It has a nice vanity area behind the door for the ladies.
Entertainment - Where to start? There’s an awesome kids club that starts about 2pm and doesn’t finish until 10pm. You have to sign your kids in and out. The reps keep the kids busy while you go off to enjoy one of the two swimming pools.
Both pools are top quality. Pool A is the larger of the pools is the one furthest away from the bar / restaurant. Pool B is the smaller of the two, and is next to the main hub of activity.
Every day the entertainment staff try to get everyone involved in activities. Water Polo, Darts, Pool, Football. Everything you can think of. It’s all great fun and all really relaxed.
Every night they put on entertainment. Singers, dancers, snake or bird shows, etc. Chris Mooney isn’t to be missed. He was recently voted the best act on Gran Canaria, and when you see him live you can see why. An incredibly talented man.
The Restaurant - Had I known the food was going to be this good Id have gone Half Board. The Buffet in the restaurant is about a Fiver, and the quality and range of food is superb. Chicken, Fish, Meat, Pastas, Races, vegetables, deserts, ice cream, and the list goes on. You get so much for so little.
I’m finding it hard to be critical of the Altamar, but if I really had to I’d say the lifts are a bit frustrating. They're more like a cable car going down the side of the mountain.
Perfectly safe, but they're slow, and sometimes you can be waiting a while for them. But you're on holiday, so not in a rush.
Puerto Rico is an amazing place, with something for every one of all ages. I’ve now been four times to four different hotels, and I can honestly say the Altamar stands head and shoulders above any of the others.
I can’t recommend the Altamar high enough. If you're heading there then you're in for a real treat. I’m already counting the days to my next visit.

What a brilliant holiday we have just had at the Altamar! One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.
We arrived at 5am in the morning and were greeted by friendly staff that were very helpful.
Apartments were spacious, equipped with a kitchen, including microwave, fridge, freezer, and toaster. Good sized bathroom and bedrooms.
Each apartment has its own private balcony with sunbeds and gorgeous views out over the ocean. Everywhere in the complex was very clean and well looked after.
There are 2 swimming pools, with plenty of sunbeds - even if you arrive at the pool later on in the day.
All the staff are very friendly, the bar staff and restaurant staff especially.
As we were half board we got breakfast and evening meal included and these were both great. Great variation each day, and even if you are self catering the buffet on a night only costs 8euros!
The entertainment was good, and Big Gaz and the rest of the team were great!
Really nothing bad to say about this hotel - a fantastic place!! - would definitely recommend it and would not hesitate in going here again!

Visited Altamar once again and as usual all aspects excellent. The view from the apartments is wonderful and is in the sun all day.
We were given an apartment on the 3rd floor but felt it was too low for us and Alberto and Daniel were able to give us another apartment the following morning just above the swimming pool in Block A.
The apartments are very clean, maid service is good and quick and for a week`s holiday just doing nothing except sunbathe and eating out in the evening it can`t be beaten.
I`d recommend the Wellington Restaurant in the Europa Centre as food is very good, wide choice and the waitress, Danielle, is excellent and very friendly.
Walking down the hill to the fairly new Amadores beach is well worth the effort as we usually stripped off and went for a swim then let the sun dry us off before popping in to one of the many cafe/restaurants along the beach for a morning`s coffee, before walking back up the hill, though have to say only for the reasonably fit as it`s a long climb.
Good exercise for the legs though!!
At the Altamar, there is 24 hour service and the staff are very friendly, also a local Supermercado near reception if you don`t want to walk up to the Europa Centre.
As said earlier, if looking for a short holiday simply to crash out, you can`t get better than the Altamar and certainly the best in upper Puerto Rico for accommodation and views.

My husband and I took our honeymoon at Altarmar and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, admittedly it was as busy as in the height of summer, but we thought the place was great.
Lovely and clean, good size apartments, great service and facilities.
The view was incredible and whether you chose to dine in the resort or wander up to the Europa, the atmosphere was great.
We can't wait until we can go back, fantastic value for money.

We arrived late at the altamar and although they were expecting us there was no welcome gift as such. It would have been handy to have been given some water, milk and bread so we could at least get a drink when we arrived at 1am! Although they were friendly when we got there, and it seemed understaffed being as it was so late!
The apartments were clean, and basic. Bathroom only had a shower but again this was clean. Even the fridge was clean.
Telly in our apartment was pay as you go though, bit of cheek as it cost 1euro per hour! But on the other side the package deal people had unlimited Telly! Was quite confused as we still paid as much except we booked privately!
Entertainment we didn’t see much of, but it was wonderfully cheesy! Bar was ok, just mega busy constantly! and they didn’t have real Malibu!
Pool although was clean and quite large, there were not enough beds for everyone there! It was a fight to get somewhere to lay down to sunbathe. People were saving them for each other and leaving the pool, very frustrating! In a week I spent a total of 2 hours by the pool cos we couldn’t get near it!
Thank goodness for the balcony! Which by the way, was private and gorgeous views!
I would recommend it for early risers but maybe leave it till quieter time so you can get near the pool! Close to amenities however!
All in all nice apartments just bit busy in peak time!

Me and my boyfriend stopped at the Altamar in October 2006 for one week, I have been before but this is when I was little, the entertainment was brilliant as before. Every night there is entertainment suited for everyone, so there is no need to leave the hotel.
Big gaz and tall paul (entertainment people) make the holiday with happy hour and Bingo. The altamar is situated on top of the hill top so it is not suitable with people will walking difficulties. However there is a lively complex of bars, shops and restaurants on the same level just 3 minutes walk away. The main complex and beach and harbour is only a 5 min taxi ride witch will only cost a few euros in a taxi.
The rooms are very clean, and quite big, the only down side to this is the balcony is open so anyone can walk on to yours, this is how you access your front door.
All in all I had a great holiday and would definitely recommend this holiday to any one. I will be returning to the altamar this September, this time for 2 weeks.

We went to the Altamar apartments July 2006 two adults, two kids 14yr and 11yr, and we can't recommend it highly enough.
The apartments were fantastic spacious and immaculate, with ceiling fans. The balcony was huge and we had the best view I've ever had on holiday.
Big Gazza and Tall Paul were brilliant and entertained everyone each and every day. The food in the resort was excellent and inexpensive.
We went on the jeep safari, very very exciting but don't wear good or white clothes. The dolphin trip - take a sick bag! Sioux city..ok but I wouldn't go again.
Also, both the centres are great although we preferred the Europa, as it has some very good restaurants and did not have just as many people trying to haul you in to "their" pub or eatery!
We all loved it and are going to try our best to go back to the exact same resort and apartment in 2007.

We have been to Puerto Rico five times but have never enjoyed it as much as at the Altamar, big Gazza and tall Paul were absolutely brilliant with the kids, the waiters were fantastic, and the rooms were brill.
The food was great in fact we very rarely went out of the complex, there is something for everyone, entertainment was great especially Chris Mooney that man can really play the guitar.
For anybody that is looking for a great holiday we recommend this place could not go anywhere else in Puerto Rico again, enjoy happy hour four till five in the afternoon then have a game of bingo, the bar shuts at twelve but if your with the kids that’s quite late enough if you want more go to the Europa centre or just relax on the huge balconies you get.

We are just back from a fantastic holiday at the Altamar. Everything was absolutely perfect, the weather was terrific, the rooms were really clean and spacious, and the view from our balcony was absolutely stunning. Everything at the Altamar is spotlessly clean, and the maid service was great.
Big Gaz and tall Paul were terrific with the entertainment, there is something for everyone, kids and adults alike. The pools were great, and there is plenty to keep everyone happy. We had the best holiday ever- we even got engaged! we would have no problems in recommending this hotel to anyone, the JMC reps Becky and Dan are always on hand to give you loads of info on the resort, and the waiters and bar staff are all really good fun.
Thanks Thomas Cook, JMC and everyone at the Altamar for our holiday of a lifetime, we're coming back next year!

We got back from the Altamar 2 weeks ago and enjoyed every minute . The apartments were clean and have excellent views over the ocean.
All the staff at the hotel are polite and willing to help in any way they can. The lifts are not as bad as some reviews have made out, but if its your first time in them hold on to something or someone as they do move away quite fast; Which is better than the hotel next door as the lift is like a snail moving up hill.
The weather was excellent with temperatures up in the 40s and the resort was fab with loads to see and do.
We highly recommend the Altamar and the resort, we will be back!!

Holiday started early September at the Altamar. The hotel was excellent, clean rooms and friendly staff. Two good size pools which were cleaned every night. The food was a good standard and we had friendly waiters. Excellent views of the sea from all the apartments and great weather, up in the 40s even the 50s for a couple of days. Enjoyed every minute of the holiday.

Great holiday, would recommend the Altamar to anyone but its mostly family based. It has a great kids club and 2 fantastic, big pools!! The entertainment from Gaza and Tall Paul was good, very funny and there were always at least two acts on every night!
The rooms were alright, suit your needs. There is an onsite spar which is reasonably priced and stocks allot of English food.
We went on a charity day to Soux City with our tour reps. Had a great laugh and would recommend anyone else to go if they hold another one or even just as an excursion.
The next year we went back to Gran Canaria and stayed in the Colina Mar. Nothing special. Altamar is by far the best! We are going back later this year again because we love Puerto Rico so much!
One more thing, when visiting Puerto Rico we ate at a restaurant in the Euorpa Centre (upon the hill) called Le Chef. Highly recommended, ate there everyday cause it was so good.
The chef is top notch and the food is what you expect in 5* hotel but at a fraction of the cost. The staff are extremely friendly and are a great laugh.
