Family Holiday

Jul 2009, Lizzie L

Just returned after a 2 week stay at the altamar. 5 adults 3 children. We had a great time. Rooms were clean and spacious. Entertainment great for the kids especially the kids club. The views from the hotel are amazing. The food was ok but gets a bit boring after 1st week so we ate out a few times. Staff at reception were friendly and helful. Bar staff not so good, seemed to be more friendly with the paying customers at the bar and grumpy with the A.I. ones. Well worth the money for A.I. if kids are with you. Bingo at happy hour a good laugh. Been to puerto rico many times and love the place, can't wait to go back. The speed boat,BIG RED,is fantastic and well worth the money so to is the parasending.Would stay at the altamar again.

Altamar
6 / 10
Jun 2009, Lisa Maclachlan

This was our 6th time in Puerto Rico but first time staying at the Altamar.
A lot of people we know had raved about it but to be honest I didn't see what all the fuss was about. I really don't like reviews that tell fib's so I am going to be as honest as I can.
The 'Bingo' song, will do your head in. Constantly playing, every day on more than 3 occasions as loud as it can be. Mostly British holidaymakers with kids.......I prefer somewhere with no kids as you couldnt get in the pool without getting in the road of kids kids kids. Adults had to use the pool at night when kids were away to get peace. Pool's were freezing....coldest pool's I have dipped my toe into. Rooms were great, bathroom was very big and shower was great but the water dribbled out. The balconies are big too. Rooms very noisy and you can hear people dragging their sunloungers on the balconies all day. We had to stick ear plugs in at 7am in the morning to try and get a kip/lie in.
Sun all day from 10am. Drinks were so so expensive, £6 euro for 2 sprite in a glass!!!! Not even a can full!!! Total robbery. Spar shop in the hotel which was actually reasonable and very handy. Rooms clean but you pre pay for the TV. Great view - we stayed 2nd level from the top just at the left handside of the lift. We did hear the lift going up and down but, got used to it.
Only sunbathed at the hotel 2 days as just couldnt get peace from kids going crazy while the parents lay back and did nothing about it. Also, the Bingo drove us mad, so we sunbathed at the beach every day and even went to Babalu Apt to sunbathe as that is where we stayed last year and we knew we would get peace and quiet.
Def would not stay here again unless it was a cheap cheap deal.
I reccommend the Riosol, Rocamar or the Babalu Apt's they were amazing and not for kids.

Me and my boyfriend have just arrived back from the canary islands and it was fantastic couldnt fault it one bit. the entertanments where brilliant and had everyone laughing. the weather was sunny every day apart from the last day when it was over cast then the sun shone out. the appartments where very clean and tidy we had a cleaner in every other day for clean towels and making our beds. the pools where spot on very clean no dirt in sight. my boyfriend and myself won bingo which was really good. i really didnt want to go home but had too at least i got a bit of a tan and that i realaxed on hoilday. BUT I THINK MYSELF AND MY BOYFRIEND WILL BE COMING BACK TO THE CANARY ISLANDS. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME HAS WELL GOING THERE BUT MY BOYFRIEND SHOWED ME AROUND THE PLACES HE HAD BEEN 7YEARS AGO WITH HIS PARENTS. BIGGAZZA AND GARY AND SARAH AND OLLIE WHERE FANTASIC ENTERTANERS AND WE BOTH HAD A LAUGH WITH THEM. SO IF YOUR THINKING OF GOING ON HOILDAY GO TO THE CANARY ISLAND AT THE ALTAMAR APPARTMENTS. THEY HAVE A LOVELY RECEPTION AREA FOR YOU TO CHILL OUT AND READ A BOOK TOOIF U LIKE READING.

my family and friends (10 of us) have just returned from 2 weeks at the altamar, cant fault the hotel, always very clean with lovely pools and terraces for sun bathing. we liked the beach playa amadores the best, which is near hotel at bottom of the very steep hill, good family beach with plenty of bars and shops. The europa centre is within walking distance of the hotel, with again plenty of bars with entertainments, shops and restaurants, our favorite was el tauro negro, food was lovely and good sized portions!friendly staff will make you feel welcome. for livlier nightlife go to commercial centre down in puerto rico harleys dancing bar is a must! all in all a fantastic holiday, will be going back!

Lush apartments

In My Opinion, I think these apartments are absoutly wonderful, I have been coming here for 5 years and only thinking about going to a another apartment makes feel abit sad. The apartments are suitable for small children as they have a little swimming pool and a adventure playground. They also have children groups to allow the parents abit of me time and to look around the resort without having to worry about the children enjoying themselves. Older children and adults are also well catered for, with 2 swimming pools and a net enclosed football pitch, ( so you can't lose your ball down the cliff side lol) In one of the pools there is two basketball nets. There are plenty of sun loungers near the pool, for more comfort you can rent a sun bed mattress.
There are two sides of the complex, Side A and Side B, when I went I got put in side A. From the apartments you have a clear view of the sea. In the apartments you have a Living area and kitchen together, which comprimises of a sofa which underneath has a bed ( be careful because they are abit arkward they dont look like they have legs but they do lol), cabinet, telephone( Calls Are Charged For), Tv ( which you have to pay for), Microwave, Hob, Fridge/freezer, in the bedroom they is 2 single beds pushed together but you can move them if desired, and wardrobe with a safety deposit box and make up table, which has a big mirror. In the bath it comprimises of a shower, a toliet and bede and a sink with a huge mirror. On the Balcony Which is also Your entrance to the apartment, there is a bigish table with 4 chairs and 2 sun loungers, the balcony is pretty massive.
The only downside is the other persons balcony is ontop of your sitting room, so you can hear them moving around. But not that much :).
In My opinion i think that this apartment is not suitable for wheelchair uses, as you need to go up stairs or downstairs, its like a maze to find your apartment.
In the Main reception, You Comfy chairs which is handy when your waiting for your bus to pick you up on the day you are coming home. Also you have about 6-7 internet booths. You also have a small but convientant Spar, it sells anything from Milk, bread to alcholol and ciggys.
Another important point i should tell you about, is that the water is'nt very good for you because we are used to a more purified water system, so it better buying bottles of water.
About a 4-5 minute walk, you come to the Europa centre, You have many resterants, including a chinese resterant and a fish shop, which sells english things such as smokies, fish and chips, patties and kababs. Yummy!!. You aslo have many shops including gift shops, and electronic devices shop, and also a sports shop upstairs. And not forgetting the pubs. There are only 2 Supermakets You seem to see are Spar and Netto, yes i know Netto !!! Which sells everything you are after, some of the stuff are abit pricey, because they are imported into the island. On a night time it becomes very lively, with clock makers, Fake tattoo stands, Tooth gems, and Hair Plaiting. Also Outside there are trampolines and Go-Kart track (for children).
The Apartments are inbetween 2 beaches, Amarodes and The main beach for Puerto Rico. For the main beach you have to walk about 25-30minutes, down the mountains until you come to sign saying "beach This way" follow it down the stairs, which is about 650-700, there are some cut offs but there are signs to make sure you know the way. To Amarodes Beach you have to come out the apartments and cross over the road, and follow the road all the way down to the beach, which should take about 15-20 minutes, Amarodes beach is a man made beach which the sand is imported from barbadoes. On both beachs there are many resterents and gift shops, along the beach.
The main shopping centre is about a 30-45 minute walk, if you desire you can take a Taxi, which are always near the apartments. When you come out the apartments stay on that side of the road, walk past the Europa centre, walk striaght down the mountain, go straight past the stairs for the beach, and follow the mountain down, then about 30 minutes down, when you can actually see the main centre, you know you are nearly there, you should then come a road which bends and another one comes off to go up another way up the mountain, follow the road and then cross over the road and down the steps and you there Yipheee!!! Lol . It is a tiring walk so carry loads of fliuds with you because with the heat you'll be exhausted.
Down there you have many resterants and pubs, also you have gift shops and a netto, also perfume and jellewry shops. Bag shops and sports shops, also designer shops. And if your missing home a McDonalds Yummy!!!.
If your not a one for sitting around the Apartments then you have many excursions to go on. My Favorite is Surf and Turf, Which is a boat trip in the morning which you go hunting for Dolphins, which we did actually did see, loads of them they were jumping around the boat it was a magnificent sight, there was little ones and big ones i was sitting on the front of the boat and they were jumping over my feet. Then sadly we had to leave them But then going back to the shore we seen a Whale which was real shock to see, it was about 15 feet long, the sight was over before it had began. You have to be really lucky to see them which appartently we were. Then when you get back to the shore you get a meal, which you can either choose from meatballs and spaghetti, beef stew and soup. Then on the Afternoon you go on the jeeps, and into the mountains for the real fun to begin, a dirt track not for the faint hearted, you are getting chucked about in jeeps then they slam their breaks on over a 40 foot drop, but the drivers are lovely some look scary ours did but he was one of the best ones. Then you get took back to your apartments.
But there others like Camel rides, horse riding in to the mountains, animal park where Monkey and a Modo dragon gets kept, which is very dangerous it can kill you in 2 minutes with the poision on its tongue.Everything to suit your taste.
Back to the apartments, lol, The Maids are lovely they come in every 2-3 days and they always say hola (which means hello). The reception and bar staff are all friendly. On A Afternoon you have Bingo, which the Dj Gazza plays a highly addictive song Lol, Then on a night time you have a kids party and then a entertainment show, and followed by a disco or Bingo. Happy Hour Is 5-6pm then 11-12 Midnight. But drinks are cheap anyway.
I think that this is a fun and friendly resort which i'll be going back time and time again.

  • Activities: Everything in the resort were amazing and all of it were my favourite x

Brilliant holiday! Went in Easter Holidays with my partner, very hot weather, lots to do and see. The hotel was great, very clean and tidy, great staff who spoke perfect english, and even a Spar store on site! Lift was fine and never broke down. Food was good, although some dishs were abit random, however a large choice to choose from so didn't really matter! Poolside bingo was great fun aswell as happy hour! A little expensive... A pint is about 2.80 euros, coke 2.60, cocktails 4.00. Entertainment okay, although we went out to the Commercial centre most nights. Overall Fab! :)

  • Advice: Multiacuatic Dolphin searching was great! The Irish bars are a good laugh and cheap!

When we arrived the staff were very hopeful. We got to I'll room which was very clean a big size. Loved the balcony you get the sun all day nice view of the sea. The food was always fresh, after just eating there once the staff would remember you and save the table again. The staff were so helpful.
The pools were always kept clean not once was it to busy to get in the pool or on the sun lounges but you do have to pay for the umbrella.
We loved our stay so much we will be going back year after year.
It is said to be a 3 star i would rate it as 4.

We have just returned from the altamar and are already planning to return again in the summer. The staff were brilliant very friendly and very helpful. The rooms were very clean and had a massive balcony with table an four chairs and two sun loungers. All apartments overlook the sea which was great to wake up. The only thing was that was there was no kettle in the room but u could hire one from reception for 5 euros for one week. We ate in the resturant two of the nights we were there and the buffet had many different choices and you could eat as much as like even my fussy 4year old went up for a second helping.the hotel also ran a free bus to the nearby amadores beach and into the bigger shoppin centre in puerto rico and back to the altamar every hour up until 10.30pm. They also ran a free bus to the waterpark in Maspolamas. the europa shooping centre was only a short walk away and had plenty of resturants and bars to cater for everyone.

  • Advice: We cannot wait to return to the altamar it was such a fantastic holiday.

Just come back from The Altamar

The apartments are clean but the lack of a bath is a dissapointment, the rental of a kettel is expensive. The bed are the worst I have ever slept in my children slept on the sofa and the bed underneath the sofa. They did not get a good nights sleep then invested in some air beds so if you go take airbeds. The food is average, for example a cheesburger is €2.80 which is about £2.80 it is quite resonable. The free bus to the beach saved a lot of money on taxis. I have been going to Gran Canaria for about 8 years with my children and my wife but the best apartments by far are the Puerto Azul which was full so just beware of the things I have said if you follow everything you should have a good time

  • Advice: nice lots of Africans trying to sell you fake good just keep walking and ignore
  • Activities: Los Geranios on the Amadoras beach does some very nice food

We have just returned from a family...
8 / 10
Oct 2008, Mrs A COLLIER

We have just returned from a family holiday (2adults and 2 kids) and have had a fantastic time. Before goin i read a few reports that had me a little worried but these were soon forgotten when we arrived. After a night flight we arrived early hours of the sunday morning and went to collect our keys, we then had to go to the lift that everyone has made comments on....they were true haha....it was deff an experience on its own although not once did it break down during our stay...obviously we were lucky!! The apartment itself was lovely...plenty of room for all of us. The only thing that i would say....IS WHERE IS THE BLODDY KETTLE!! The swimming pools were great and very big so the kids had a great time bein able to swim till we had to literally drag them out! The resturant was very good and the service was fantastic. We only ate there twice but the buffet menu was great for everyone and you could eat as much as you liked. Adults 10 euros and children 5 euros. That was for as many courses as you liked!!! They also had a standard menu if you wanted something else. Kids menu was great too. BIG GAZ.....well what can i say....he was a scream....great bloke who has a great sense of humour and the kids loved him too. Overall the complex was clean and tidy and the staff were very nice. The actual thomas cook rep.....Ben....well he was useless and didnt help much at all when my daughter came down with an ear infection and the doctor told me i may not be able to fly home...luckily we were able to and that was all thanks to the fantastic spanish doctor!! The amadores beach is just a short walk away and is gorgeous....the kids could play in the shallow waters and the best bit is the sand rubs off and doesnt stick to everything lol. The Europa was just a stones throw away and had plenty of bars and resturants to cater for everyone. They were very friendly and always made you and the children especially feel very welcome. Watch out for the guys that try selling you camcorders....ipods...psps....ds etc as they will try ripping you off....tell them what you want to pay for it and if they say no walk away.....they will soon come chasing you agreeing to the amount you offered haha. I got 2 ipods and a digital camcoder/camera all for about £150. They told me i was a hard woman...too bloody right when i know they will drop the price!! Since being back home ive had them all checked out and they are all working perfectly well so the kids are happy and so am i. Would deff go back to the Altamar again.
