Very friendly staff but the lady that owns/runs the hotel has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. She makes you feel but that you asked for something in the first place!
Rude and miserable she seems she doesn't want to be there. I would not recommend this experience to anyone!

I stayed here for ten days half board in July 2010. Booked via Cooperative travel and found the price very reasonable especially being a single traveller. I found the hotel very noisy - this is mainly due to the fact that that is it on a road junction so you get lorries,... more

this hotel is awful. I stayed there with my wife and will not be there ever again ever. The room was dirty and smelled bad. We asked to change our room and were very rude. Eventually they changed our room and it was worse. it even had cockroaches. The breakfast was very poor and poor.

My husband and I have just come back from one of the best 2 week holidays we've ever had in the Castro Hotel, Ammoudara, Crete. I am basing this review on the fact that we knew before we left that it was going to be basic and therefore weren't expecting five star luxury... more

First the good points: the staff is indeed quite friendly and the hotel is very cheap. The rooms in the new building are nice enough. Breakfast is functional, but ok. However, I have never stayed in such a noisy place (combination of different factors, such as location on a... more

Just got back and we're already looking forward to going back again next year. Ok so the rooms are basic but they have all the essentials and are kept spotlessly clean. The pool was clean and uncrowded. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The taverna's in Amoudara in... more

I've just got back from Crete with my wife and two children (boy, 14 & girl, 11). We were hesitant to book this accommodation having read the other reviews first but for £135 half-board for one week we decided it was too cheap not to take a chance. In the end, both my wife... more

heatwave at Castro hotel, heraklion
Just returned from a week at the Castro Hotel at Ammoudara, Heraklion, Crete where we going through a heatwave. Very clean throughout with small pool but pool was never busy. Apartments nice and large with good air conditioning which worked well as we had up to 50 degrees for a couple of days. Very helpful staff, asked for anything and it was done almost immediately. Dining room overlooking the pool but not air conditioned and very basic. The very worst thing was the great lack of choice if you were half board. Breakfast was cornflakes, slices of bread with cheese, ham and couple jams. Orange squash, tea or coffee. Dinner - there was only 2 choices of main course and only soup as a starter and only one sweet - this was usually just melon one night and ice cream on the others. Food wasn't bad quality in evening. What i thought was funny was there was either fish or chicken one night and i wanted some cauliflower or calabrese and what i got was ' that only comes with the fish, you can only have potatoes with your chicken!!!!' nowhere to sit and relax in the evening except to sit in the restaurant by the road - really needed a lounge area. It is on the start of the road to Ammoudara and fairly quiet but quite nice little touristy shops and supermarkets and restaurants all around. Even though only a few miles from airport you never hear the planes. But overall we found it very good for the price we paid and would use it again.
Poor
The proximity to the local beach, which is only a short stroll across the road from the hotel, is a good feature that comes with booking this hotel. Other advantages are that supermarkets, car rental centres, shops, restaurants etc are literally just outside the hotel which is convenient. The hotel is not far from Heraklion - merely a short taxi ride away or if you prefer, a cheap bus ticket away. There are regular buses that run to and from Heraklion and to the airport so public transport is not an issue. Be careful to ensure that taxi driver takes you to the correct Castro hotel as there are 2, one in the centre of Heraklion and one on the beach, a few miles away. They try and con you by taking you to the other one first, then charging you again for 'your mistake'. Bad points- the breakfast was poor, with little selection, and would not really fill the stomach of a hungry traveller, so a person would need to make other arrangements for this. Another bad point is that across the hotel, they are building more apartment blocks, so from 8am onwards, drilling was very much a problem for us as you could hear it even when the doors and windows were locked. This went on all day. In addition, sunbathing by the pool was an issue as you had to endure the endless staring from the local workmen who were working on the opposite hotel. Another problem was the noise - all you could hear was the endless noise of mopeds going up and down the road day and night which was irritating. The room itself was not bad (fitting with the price), very basic though, with uncomfortable beds and without air conditioning (unless you paid). I would recommend people to book an apartment as they were slightly more comfortable. Overall, if you don't mind the above bad points, then I am sure you will find this hotel satisfactory for your purposes.
Definitely stay somewhere else
This was one of the worst hotels we have ever stayed at. As you can see by the photograph, the room was spartan to the point of being cell-like. There was no A/C, and the noise from the traffic outside was constant. Construction started at 7 a.m., and the cleaning staff started their rounds at 8 a.m. with no consideration for sleeping guests. The mattresses were 4" thick with no boxspring on a concrete base. One small thin pillow, one threadbare sheet and one towel were supplied and not replaced for three days. The bathroom was miniscule and not very clean. As far as the food, the breakfast consisted of instant coffee, watered-down juice, meat and cheese, no fruit, no eggs, and yogurt on the first day only. As far as dinner, it was not served in the nicer main dining room but in a back room past the swimming pool. The walls were dirty, the floors unswept and the lights did not work in the 3rd floor hallway during our stay which necessitated feeling your way in the dark to the room. Altogether substandard with many other nicer places on the same strip.
Mixed
A mixed review for this hotel. Resort - fairly quiet resort, especially outside the July/August peak season. BUT Cretan "chavs" driving (handbrake turns and all) up and down the main resort strip and to one side of the hotel on a minor road at all times of day and night didn't help the enjoyment. There's a power station at one end of the resort which spoils the view but isn't much of a pain apart from that. Hotel - rooms fine, but very stuffy unless you pay for AC (cost us EUR50 for 2 weeks). Nice pool with loungers etc. Food - eating in the main restaurant which is also open to non-residents, but from a rather limited HB specific menu. Became rather repetitive after 2 weeks when there are only 4/5 starters on the menu, but the food was tasty. Staff - friendly and polite, but the cleaners didn't do much dusting which might have helped.
I wouldn't go back here
Our room was in the older part of the building and it wasn't clean.
Great for the price
We are a family of five and stayed at this hotel for 8 days. The rooms were spotless and contained a fridge and cooking facilities. We had the good fortune of having two balconies ( one was very large ) which we enjoyed very much. We stayed half board and enjoyed a variety of evening meals ( no skimping here ) of three courses. The staff were all friendly and we had no problems from the maids . We would stay again no problem.
Going back next year!!!
Like a previous review, for the price we weren't expecting anything special. How wrong could we be...... Ok the room was basic but it had all essentials and was spotlessly cleaned each day complete with a change of sheets and towels. The pool was clean and was not crowded all week and hotel staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Add to this the fact that Maxim's, the hotel restaurant, is the best of a very good bunch we dined at in Amoudara and you can't go wrong. If you're looking for the regimented 5 star efficiency of the rat-race hotels of London or New York, don't come to Crete on holiday. We were in Crete to relax and enjoy the change of pace - and the Castro Hotel was a major reason we found what we were looking for. Mark & Sam, London.
Disappointed with the service
We arrived at 6 AM after taking the ferry from Piraeus. We had booked the hotel since the previous night so that we would have a place to sleep upon arrival. The receptionist/owner greeted us and took us to our room, a triple, which was basic, but fine. I expected that the room would be cleaned and the towels changed after we slept and showered. This was not done. When I asked, I was told that the towels were only changed every 2nd or 3rd day and that the maid had gone home. I still expected the room to be cleaned every day, but it was not. There was a pool, but the water was murky and not very inviting. Breakfast was on the skimpy side.
I'd stay somewhere else
Yes this hotel is very cheap, however in early June before the tourist rush there is a lot of cheap accommodation in Crete / Amoudara. The sheets were thread bare, the shower head is not attached to the wall. The shower didn't drain very well. The cleaning staff knock once (maybe) and quickly come into your at 9am, apologise and then do it again the next day. We could hear them doing this to several people along the corridor. A/c was an additional cost on the room rate of 5 euro a day. Breakfast was rather poor. The pool on the other hand is very nice. And like the previous review we also found the food from the attached restuarant to be amazing and ate there more than once.
Absolutely Brilliant
We visited the Castro Hotel, Ammoudara, Crete for 8 days and thought because it was so disgustlingly cheap, we would be living in a flea ridden hovel. To say we were pleasantly suprised is a understatement. The hotel was beyond all expertations beautiful, clean, big rooms, wonderful maid service, helpful and extremely friendly staff and to top it all the restaurant attached to the hotel was the best food we found in crete. My husband worked his way through the menu and each meal was better than the previous one. The hotel was also on the bus route and the stop was outside the hotel, great for travelling and also really reasonably prices. One of the best holidays we have ever had, and will be going back next year.
