there is no way I will ever go near this place again, food was crap unless you want fish every day, cold fish, hot fish and plenty of luke warm fish., entertainment was crap, bar staff were bad tempered and the restaurant staff ignored you unless you were Spanish.
- Advice: Stay well away.
- Activities: none around the Perla

Me and my dad and brother stayed here in July 2007 as a summer holiday. We booked through globe travel and they gave us this hotel. When we arrived the airport was nice although our luggage was lost, and there was no transport to our hotel which was at the other side of the island. So we had to spend about £50 on a taxi but in the end we just rented a car. It took us literally 3 hours to work out where the actual hotel was as it is located in a random side road and no one seemed to know where it was. when we got to the hotel we had dinner which was ok and then went to sleep. next morning we woke up had breakfast etc and then used the swimming pool which was all right. The jacuzzi was cold and not warm at all so was more like a small swimming pool for children. To make things worse we were the only English people staying there at the time which isn't bad but all the Spanish treated us bad for example after 11 o'clock we had to pay for our own drinks where as the Spanish were still getting them free! the only really good thing was the nearby huge lake type swimming pool. Another problem is no one spoke English so this hotel is only really good if you can speak basic Spanish. So overall i think this is more a Spanish type hotel than a tourist hotel.
after 3 days we phoned up globe travel and got relocated to a better 4* hotel on the other side of the island which was great and was very good as it had disco's 3 swimming pools and a huge restaurant.

I am 52, and amazed that it has taken all this time to find what has to be the most perfect winter holiday destination and resort you can find within sensible flying distance of GB. Yes there were clouds, and yes there was rain, but they did come as pleasant relief to what is a glorious winter sun destination.
I feel I have to say this though as the NW facing coast does come in for some stick on rainfall; if you are after a genuinely authentic place to stay avoiding the misplaced Lego resorts like Las Americas, it is really worth braving the odd shower to stay in the beautiful resort and town of Puerto de la Cruz.
Anyway, that said, this is all about the hotel. We did search the internet extensively for reviews before we left, and we did have mild reservations when we found a few bad ones. But we need not have worried as these must have been old reviews, or as with anywhere the odd dissatisfied customer having a go.
Our opinion was (family of 4 adults - 2 double rooms) it was absolutely brilliant, and as a keenly priced 3 star was well worth the money. The reception, halls, pool, jacuzzi, sauna, bars and terraces (communal areas) were all meticulously clean and were perfectly adequate for the hotels size.
The rooms were a good size with full bath suite, good but small TV and well chosen ambient music. The bathrobe and kettle were missing and the fridge as usual was not that efficient, but these were all very minor issues and had no effect on our holiday enjoyment whatsoever. The balcony (we were 3rd floor possibly the best level), offered a good outlook over a small ravine complete with noisy cockerel, shepherd and his goats all adding authenticity (and all in the middle of town).
The hotel is well off the beaten track (15 mins from the front by foot) in a residential location (our one complaint would be that the hotel web page does not have a detailed map - as believe me, it is almost impossible to find if you do your own transfers), but we like it that way. And I am sure there are many others out there that appreciate this also.
The food, it would be easy to criticise if compared to restaurant 'a la carte' as I feel most people have done when criticising in this area before. But this is not, it is a buffet and an extremely well run one at that. There was always a good combination of hot and cold food (we were half board so I can only comment on breakfast and evening meals), and all well stocked right up to closing (as we were always late). Having said this, we did notice a significant improvement in this area during our stay, so it is pleasing to see that the hotel is always looking for improvements in all areas - keep it up.
Again, I have to say this as it happened, but how do you keep fish as if just cooked on a hot buffet? (Smaller portions regularly changed I would suggest?) This is a general issue and not specific to this hotel, but the fish was overcooked unless you 'caught' a fresh tray and this is a shame as this is one of the reasons a lot of people visit these islands. But overall the food was always well cooked, salads well presented and very fresh, and combinations well thought through. Something for everyone, unless you like Blackpool food which is clearly what a couple of reviewers before me do. So with respect to them, why don't they just stay in England?
It is up a good climb from the centre (and I do mean climb), but we enjoyed the exercise, and the hotel as promised operated a very good free bus service to the centre of town.
And finally but not the least by any stretch, the staff. They were excellent, if not a little strict. But you do not mind being 'ordered' to wait at the restaurant entrance, so you can be led to a fully prepared table setting and have a waiter ready to take your wine order. This perceived and necessary control leads to an exceptionally well run family hotel.
And to cap it all the car hire is the cheapest I have seen. So if going independently, before booking transfers check the Airport car hire companies. 2 weeks hire with insurance and accident waiver (but excluding petrol - which is extremely cheap anyway), was less that the transfer to this resort.

We have just returned from a week in this hotel, whilst it was clean and the rooms were cleaned every day with clean towels, we had an absolutly awful time, the staff favoured every other nationality except the BRITISH,and as we were the only british family there we felt very left out. On arrival at 10.30 we were given a cole meal of salads and meats and told by the night porter to go to the bar to get a drink, it was bang on 11pm at the bar and the waiter refused to serve us and we were AI, my Husband went to the night porter who managed to get us a drink served, I then asked the porter for three cups so we could make a hot drink in our room with the travel kettle we had brought with us, I was told it was not possible as we were AI and we could get drinks at the bar from 11-11, so we couldn't get any cups, our 11 year old daughter could not have her bedtime drink of hot chocolate,so the next morning we had to go out and by some cups. The food was all the same one day the evening menu was Fish Soup, Seafood Paella, deep fried sqid rings, Hake fish and Sardenes - so if you didn't like fish you went hungry, on an evening there was lots of salad platters but no cooked meats to go with them, there was no cheese board and the is a picture on the internet showing all fresh fruit which is a total lie all there was is apples, oranges & bananas, no melon, grapes, kiwi, the dining room staff also had a problem with the British, all tables were set for two people, then two famalies of four arrived and they got settings for four but we never got a setting for three, we paid for this holiday the same way other people did. All the entertainment on an evening was centered around every nationality except the british, it was totally boring, the afternoon entertainment was advertised in spanish & german, so we couldn't understand what day things were happening but having said that the afternoon entertainment didn't happen anyway, there was no entertainment rep to be found, the swimming pool was no bigger than a paddling pool and lilo's were not allowed, we had to throw a one euro coin in to the pool for our daughter to dive for to keep her entertained, the pool table kept swallowing the white ball, so we could'nt play properly. In the restaurant there was notices saying no mobile phones however the spanish & german were using theres it also said no shorts and no bare arms, so my husband and nyself adhered to this and sat there like cooked turkeys whilst the other various nationalities were wearing shorts and sleevless tops and nothing was said. The hotel is miles from anywhere a 20 minute walk to the nearest shop to buy milk & water and all up hill, we also took the minibus to the town centre but all the shops closed at 13:30 and the minibus was not available until 15:30 so we had to get a taxi back. Although we are upset about the money the holiday cost us, we are more upset that we have wasted 7 days of our annual leave entitlement which can't be replaced and it was also our Honeymoon, we got married in June and saved up for an extra special holiday with no corners cut - very sad, we would not reccommend this hotel to anyone if you are BRITISH ans have a young family
