Marcella Royal Hotel reviews

Just returned from a three night stay...

Just returned from a three night stay at the Marcella Royal Hotel.
We went as a group of five, two couples & one single. The streets of Rome are like a labyrinth & if you choose to walk to the hotel from the station (which we did) you will definitely need a detailed street map to be able to navigate through the named streets. The walk, with cases, took us about 15-20 minutes.
The hotel doesn't look that grand from the outside, but once inside, it's very impressive. The decor is very dated, but extravagant, like checking in to a mansion, lots of small statues & paintings, plush (but again dated) sofas in the reception. It’s how I would imagine a four (or five) star hotel would have looked in the 1800's, but none the less, very pleasant & very clean.
The reception staff speak excellent English & they all seemed to be very grateful for the job they do & all Romans seem to take great pride in their jobs, no matter what it is. If you speak to the older looking reception clerk (there is only one older looking one) he will tell you where is good to eat out around the hotel. Every recommendation he gave us was fantastic, we had an amazing meal every time we went out, thanks to his recommendations.
The rooms seem to vary in terms of the bathrooms & furnishings, for example, the single room had wall to wall mirrors & a large bathroom, whilst our room had just one mirror & a small bathroom, the last double room also had a large bathroom. The walls have sound proofing which appears to be wall paper, but when you touch it, you see that it is more like carpet. I would say that everything in the room is fairly modern looking, but the walls are in a bright floral design, which (like the reception) look like they are from the 1800's. However, all is very clean & comfortable.
The doors are made of very thick, solid wood & there is an air conditioning unit, with a switch on the wall to turn it on, but it is a separate unit, controlled by a remote control. One out of three of out air-conditioning units worked. There is also a lot of street noise, even on the fifth floor where we were & you can definitely expect to be woken up from 6am by cars & people working. There is no way to escape this apart from maybe wearing earplugs.
The hotel is very proud of their roof top piano bar. We found this to be a very nice plus for the hotel, there was a musician in there every night, even when it was quite empty. There are lovely views across the city & this is also where you go for breakfast & enjoy the view by day. The drinks were served by a very friendly waiter & this made the price of the drinks worth it (bloody Mary 10 Euros - about £7, daiquiri 9 Euros, beer 8 euros) which is all added on to your room charge & billed when checking out.
I have never been to Italy before, but having stayed here, I would say that Rome now is my favourite city & if I return, I would certainly stay at the Marcella Royal hotel.
