Fabulous Hotel!
from A TripAdvisor Member
We recently spent our 20th wedding anniversary in Venice and stayed at the San Cassiano. We could not have made a better choice - this is a hotel with everything, including helpful friendly staff, a great atmosphere and the perfect location. A lovely stroll through enchanting alleys and beautiful squares takes you to the Rialto Bridge in less than 10 minutes, although it will probably take longer as you stop to look at the many market stalls on the way. The fish market is absolutely fascinating. We were lucky enough to have a wonderful large room on the 3rd floor overlooking the Grand Canal. It was not cheap but it was worth every euro, and was one of the best hotel rooms we've stayed in anywhere. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Venice - you won't be disappointed.
Sentimental San Cassiano

After reading a few negatives about this hotel, I felt I must defend it. We stayed for five nights in October 2004. Overall, I felt it was a wonderful hotel with so much character! The staff was very friendly to us and even arranged a free private taxi to Murano for me. Our hotel room was huge and easily accomodated three heavily-packed female tourists. The bathroom was large and beds comfortable. The breakfast room is one place I shall remember forever, because the food was so delicious and the view from the outdoor balcony amazing! At first, we thought the hotel was in an out of the way location, but it is only a short stroll from the Rialto bridge and some great shopping. Take a map to find your way back for the first few trips as there are many turns into alleys to get back from the main areas of Venice. I would stay here again in a heartbeat! The only drawbacks are 1) we were on the third floor and there are STEEP steps and we had to carry our luggage down and climb up after walking the miles of Venice alleys and bridges and I do mean STEEP! 2) one night employee was very annoyed to unlock the front door for my roommate when she returned at 2 a.m. Otherwise, everyone was kind to us and the hotel is a unique, lovely find! I would recommend it to anyone.
Everything we could have asked for

Just returned from spending 3 nights at San Cassiano as a 50th Birthday celebration surprise for my husband. What a great hotel. Our unexpectedly huge, luxurious room overlooked the Grand Canal. It was difficult to tear ourselves away from the two windows where we watched all kinds of comings and goings. The hotel was spotless and the staff charming, helpful and courteous but not over the top. Yes, the room was a bit hot and you could hear the canal noises at night but everything else made up for that. The night receptionist doubled up as a not over-efficient barman leading to very ample measures! Breakfast was absolutely fine and the waitress very sweet and efficient. The little terrace at the back was lovely to sit and arrange the day or to relax and watch the world go by. We even saw a bridal party go past on a gondola! From here you can also watch the little public gondolas (traghettos) ferrying people backwards and forwards across the canal. We found the location ideal, quite quiet but within easy reach of everything. It really was only a few minutes walk to Rialto Bridge. You must, however, buy a street map. We had no problem getting around but, even though San Cassiano is signposted, we would have struggled without. We would, and already have, recommended this hotel to our friends and find it difficult to believe some of the more negative reviews posted on this site.
Everything in this hotel is first rate!

We didn't know whether to write just one more letter of praise for this great hotel or respond in some way to those reviews that were mystifying in their negativity. We can't believe they could have been referring to Hotel San Cassiano Ca'Favretto. Everything in this hotel was first rate: the beautiful and spacious lobby with the lovely Murano glass chandeliers, the little porch overlooking the Grand Canal and the bar where my boyfriend enjoyed a late-night drink; the friendly and helpful staff who took good care of our luggage and kept our room in perfect order, who made restaurant reservations and pointed us to the nearest pharmacies when a cold set in; the light-filled, lovely breakfast room that looked out over the canal was always a delight and the breakfasts were a good reason to wake up--the scrambled eggs, the cereals, croissants, three kinds ham and sausages, yogurts, etc. and a wonderful young woman who brought tea into my room when I was ailing; our room was huge and had lovely windows opening onto the courtyard, the color a deep burgundy with sumptuous linens, a bathroom that was spotless and entirely renovated; the powerful shower and thick, hot towels from the towel warmer were always a treat; fine location, close to a vaporetto stop and an easy walk to the Rialto and some great restaurants just a few steps away. We loved it and will always remember our days in Venice fondly--thanks, in part to this lovely hotel. Joan and Jay in Iowa City, Iowa Visited the hotel in March, 2005

We spent several nights at this charming hotel in the mid-90's and found it to be lovely. Yes, it was 'older' and well lived in, not new and sanitized. But that is not what we would have wanted. If so we'd have stayed at a Hilton back in the States! The staff was fabulous and friendly. As young (!) single women they took great care of us. We were lucky enough to have a room overlooking the Grand Canal and it was breathtaking. I cannot wait to take my boyfriend.
Memorable view from the breakfast room

Stayed here in March 2004 for 2 nights for an absolute bargain rate as it was still low season. Located on the Grand Canal with a fantastic view from the very pleasant breakfast room. Found the staff very nice .... but without being "in your face". Room was pretty and very clean with the temperature just right. Bathroom very clean and plenty big enough .... with a bath and bidet. Getting to the hotel the back way by foot is an adventure (not to be missed) through the rabbit warren backstreets. Unless you have a good detailed map it might be worth arriving directly by boat. Not far from Rialto Bridge (don't miss the Rialto markets) and near enough to St Mark's Square by foot (about 15 mins). Would highly recommend this hotel .... especially for people travelling out of season who are looking for very good value for money.

The Gold Standard

The Most Beautiful European hotel I have every stayed at . Huge modern rooms, built in radio in the bath, wonderful breakfasts with bacon & eggs, fruits, cereal, breads. REAL towels (not those kim wipes you get at some European hotels). My wife and kids did not want to leave. We will be back !!! PS - TA in NYC - cannot believe you and I stayed in the same hotel.
Loved every minute!

I had a great stay here for the entire 5 days of our trip. The staff was really nice and accomodating. We did travel in October, so didn't need A/C. I can't comment on the summer conditions. I disagree that it's in a "bad" part of town. There frankly isn't really a bad part of town in Venice. It is kind of eerie how quiet it got at night in the immediate 2-3 blocks, but I never had any questions about safety. The room itself is average sized.. compared to a suite at a Vegas strip hotel, but it wasn't too cramped for a European hotel. I'd say it was about 450- 500sq ft. including the bathroom. I didn't get a room with a view of the canal, but their breakfast room has a view to the canal and frankly, you won't be spending that much time in the hotel room if you're going to enjoy the city. Also, there's no elevator, so someone has to lug the luggage to the room.
I don't understand why people like this place
from A TripAdvisor Member
I was just reading the reviews of this hotel- where I actually left after one night of a multi-night stay recently. I really don't get why anyone would want to stay here. I met some people from France who were staying there when I was as well - and they too thought it was a dump. It is really unattractive....their is no air conditioning - the room never dipped below 86 degrees the entire evening we tried to sleep and the staff was nasty. I really wish I could get my arms around why anyone would like this hotel for any reason. I have never been so completely dissatisifed with a hotel in my entire life. Please think twice about staying here based on the rave reviews as they are definitely way too generous. I don't want someone else to be as dissapointed as we were. That is my only motive in writing this review.

My name is Franco Maschietto, I am the owner of the Hotel San Cassiano and I want to reply to these reviews on my hotel (this one and the one entitled House of Horrors); not only they have insulted my house and all its staff writing lies, but also offended all the other guests who wrote good things of us, practically saying they understand NOTHING.
I have the feeling that the person who wrote the reviews, and we know who he is, maybe wants to make war to us because during his FOUR NIGHT STAY (and not one as he declares) the air conditioning was off because of a sudden change of temperature; I admit my mistake in not understanding that the only thing this person wanted from us was MONEY, and not apologies. I can't publish his private letters to me but, if I could, readers can see with their eyes that what written on Tripadvisor is absolutely FALSE:
1. He wrote on Tripadvisor that after one night stay he run away and went to hotel Europa and Regina, but this guest knows this is not true and as a matter of fact he stayed 4 nights as booked, and also he wrote to me that he enjoyed most of his stay.
2. He says that the hotel position is bad, while in his personal letter to me he writes of positive location
3. It is written nasty staff, while in his private correspondence he admires the behaviour of Ernesto, who made him feel very welcome.
I don't write further about his REAL OPINION on the room size and the cleanliness, which is completely different from what he wrote on Tripadvisor.
Although I can understand this guest felt uncomfortable without air-conditioning, even if some others clients at the same time were asking
for heating, I can't admit these unfounded slanders.
I am very proud of my hotel and I am working very hard to maintain it and I cannot accept people like him split on my work.
Wonderful accommodation and service. Location magical as can be seen from the following description. Everything had taken on a magical new light that morning and the view from the small bridge that crossed the Rio de Due Torri stopped me in my tracks. Tall apartment... more
