Impressed by The Hotel Fenice
We were absolutely delighted with the Hotel Fenice. The location was perfect, just a ten minute stroll from St. Marks Square, breakfast was more than adequate with a very pleasant waiter even if the older waitress was a bit glum! I`m sure it wasn`t intentional. The room (apparantly we had the largest one) was excellent with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!! The en suite immaculate and the public rooms really pleasant. I would highly recommend it. I almost forgot to add that the receptionist on duty when we arrived was very... more
Typical Venetian hotel
Hotel was typical of an older Venetian hotel. Location great, room adequate but a bit run down. Breakfast varied and okay.
Quaint but uncomfortable
Lovely setting, quaint appearance, reasonably good location next to Teatro La Fenice and not far from St. Mark's. The room was reasonably sized for the (Venice-adjusted) price. The bed was uncomfortable - basically a foam pad on a cot-like spring - the shower was a hand-held, and the "air conditioner" in the room had about as much impact as placing a bucket of ice on the dresser (though we were solemnly assured by the desk clerk that it had been checked and was now "working properly"). It was bearable because we only stayed two nights.... more
no ac; plenty of mosquitos
My room was hot stuffy and airless. When I tried to open the windows to get some air, bugs flew in with abandon. The windows looked out on shafts full of pigeons. In fact, the bathroom window had chicken wire on it, because they were probably flying into the room before it was put up. Thank god I left before the mosquitos got really bad. All in all a terrible disappointment. I can't imagine why so many of the guide books list it.
absolute disgrace
This hotel was a disgusting hotel with the worse possible service ever. I would not recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. Its infested with mosquitoes and rats. Hotel staff are rude and arrogant. The stay was that bad i had to check out early. Please be warned.
The best location
We really struggled to find a hotel in Venice that was both 'affordable' and close to the main sites - St Marks Sq and The Rialto Bridge. Hotel La Fenice Et Des Artistes was the only one that met all of our criteria and I wondered what the catch was going to be. We made our way from the water bus through a maze of tiny alleys and found the hotel set in a quiet courtyard only 5 or 6 minutes walk from the Grand Canal. It's a bit of a trek with the cases - over tiny bridges, up and down steps but that's Venice and there's no other way to get... more
Quaint & Quirky!
Have just returned (Feb 18th 2005) from a 5 night stay at the Fenice hotel. It was our first trip there and I went with an open mind. Unlike other contributors we did not find the hotel hard to find - but we did have good directions. We didn't think like some it was too far from the nearest vaporetti stop - 5 minutes walk max isn't far! As for the hotel, all the staff were friendly and very helpful, booking restaurants for us and advising us of the best way to get to certain sights. Our room was large (room 104) on the first floor... more
Romantic, Quaint, Lovely...
My partner and I stayed in this hotel in August for a midweek break. Found the hotel a little difficult to find but was impressed when we arrived. Very friendly receptionist, and very gay friendly hotel. Room was smallish but had a balcony overlooking the artist's studios across the way. Air con, nice bathroom. Noise from the outside in the morning but lovely to wake up knowing that you're in Italy! Only drawbacks are that the restaurants around the hotel are VERY expensive and it is quite a way from Vaporetti stations. Lovely... more
Never again
We have just come back from Venice where we had a delightful 3 days and nights marred ever-so-slightly by this hotel. The hotel was well located but the room! It was small, offered little storage and the bathroom was rather dilapidated, but we decided we would put up with it. The following morning however, we were awoken by loud conversation outside the window, bottles being thrown into a dumper, followed by the person upstairs using the toilet. I have stayed in well over a hundred hotel rooms and some weren't great. But I've never... more
Not bad for Venice
It's a little old but it's unique. The large lounge was nice. They serve breakfast there and everyone gathers at couches and armchairs with little tables. It was a little hard to find, especially at night, in the rain, but we made it! Venice is an expensive place so I think we did very well for the money. We found the restaurants to be insanely expensive and would have happily gone to McDonald's if it had been open. Our trip was in 11/04.
