Concordia Hotel Reviews

8 / 10
Mar 2006, Mrs O Ringrose

The Concordia is a four star hotel and boasts that it's the only hotel overlooking St Mark's Square. That is true - although it overlooks a small corner of St Marks Square not the main square, but it is opposite the Basillica. The entrance is round the back, which took a... more

Above expectations
We stayed at the Hotel Concordia in St. Mark's Square. It is a very friendly and helpful Hotel with nothing being too much trouble for the staff. The food was excellent. This is a perfect location for anyone with difficulties in walking as it is so near St. Mark's the Doge's Palace and the boats. On our first morning we were given a complimentary boat trip to the Island of Murano to see the famous glass works and some of their creations. There is so much to see and we can only recommend that you have your visit well planned beforehand knowing which Churches, Museums, Islands or boat trips you want to take. If you do not like large crowds, go to Venice before the middle of May. A wonderful experience.
Overall, disappointed
We were moved here from Relais San Marco because of water damage and were assured that it was a much better hotel. On the face of it you would think so because there is a doorman and porter, small bar and restaurant but actually we were hugely disappointed. We did get a welcome drink on arrival and was told about the free trip to Murano but the receptionist wasn't pushy about it. Our room was small, with a small TV and smelt of stale smoke despite a sign requesting non-smoking. The bathroom was small with a separate shower but no bath. On the plus side, we had a great view of the domes of the Basilica and the bed was comfortable. However, breakfast was poor, with no hot options in the buffet and chaotic on the Sunday morning with no cups or spoons etc. Even though we didn't get to stay there, I would still go to the Relais San Marco if I returned to Venice because of what I've seen the rooms to be like in almost the same location.
Great hotel, go in November, 70% off
We went in November of 2004, a bit cool but nothing a warm sweater and a windbreaker couldn't fix. Hotel room was 400euros in high season, we paid 135euros. Great experience, very clean room including the marble bathroom. Plasma tv and view of St-Mark's square. Can be a bit noisy because of its prime location but that was to expected. Very well heated for that time of the year. Staff was very helpful, good buffet breakfast. Again location and service were excellent. ps. avoid the complimentary trip to the Murano glass workshops provided by hotel, it's a waste of time, all they want to do is sell you glass. MB
quite nice
I recently stayed at the hotel concordia and was quite pleased. The room I stayed in was very nice with a view onto the piazetta, beside the basilica. The staff were quite friendly as well, although every time you approached the reception desk you were bombarded with offers of "cheap"gondola rides and "wonderful"private tours. It turned out that the gondola rides were cheaper if you asked the gondoliers yourself.the breakfast was nice.you could sit were you liked if you came down early but if you came down late the waiters had a tendancy to pick your seats for you as they were trying to set up for lunch. Also, while I was there, there was a porter who brought my bags upstairs for me.(Actually he put them on the elevator with me and then ran up the three flights of stairs to collect them!)All in all I had a very pleasant stay.I would definately go back to this hotel.
Worst Hotel Ever!
My sister and I were told that this was a very nice hotel and told it was rated 4 stars. Since we were paying 300 euros a night, we expected a luxury hotel room, what we experienced was quite different. First, there is no porter to help you with your luggage, so you have to carry it to the front desk after 2 flights of stairs. Then, they held on to our passports for half the day. The front desk is constantly bombarding you with various tours, which are overpriced. When we were shown our room, it smelled of cigarette smoke and we asked for our room to be changed immediately. They did not anticipate this so we had to give them a few hours to find another room for us. The new room had a plasma screen t.v., but the reception was terrible and there were very large flies, the size of bumble bees in our room. We didn't get the fruit basket that was promised. During the breakfast buffet, we weren't allowed to choose our seats. The waiters chose for us. Although we did put a do not disturb sign in front of our door, the maid opened our door with a key (very rude, indeed; something you do not expect at a 4 star hotel). I could go on and on about how terrible our stay was. All in all, for the amount of money we spent per night at this hotel, it was not worth it and this hotel should be categorized as two stars only. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. So if you want to enjoy your time in Venice, do not stay at the Concordia.
Great Location, Great Hotel
We visited Venice in Dec 1999 and stayed at the Hotel Concordia. This is a very good hotel in the heart of San Marco Square. The room we stayed in was huge and the staff were friendly! Since the hotel is right in the heart of the square, it is very conveniently located to visit all the sights in town (on foot of course!) and is very easy to get to the Airport by boat. The walk to the hotel from the landing pier is only 5 mins. across the square. We'll certainly stay here if we go back to Venice. The staff were friendly and gave us the name of a very good restaurant in the back lanes where we ate 3 out of our 4 nights in Venice. A truly memorable place. Our children (then 10 and 6) loved it
Stay Here!
I stayed at the Concordia 8-12 September. Talk about location - the hotel faces the Piazzetta de Leon - the Basilica San Marco is literally less than a stone's throw away. I think all rooms in Venice are on the smallish side, and this place is no exception. But they are very comfortable and well taken care of. The staff is very friendly and professional - I was never pressured to take the almost obligatory trip to Murano or a gondola ride. Piero at the front desk was most helpful - no question was too trivial or stupid. I stayed in room 104, which actually has a small balcony that projects right out into the Piazza! I will stay at the Concordia for all my future trips to Venice - it was that good!
Good experience overall
We (myself and husband) recently spent 4 nights at the Hotel Concordia. We'd read reviews of the hotel on this site and so were forewarned of the 'special' deals. These were presented to us, but there was no pressure to buy. We were also offered an upgrade at 30 euros a night to a room with a view of St Mark's, which we didn't take up (a good thing, as it was partially shrouded by a sheet because of restoration work). Unless you're desperate for the view, and intend spending a lot of time gazing out of your bedroom window, I wouldn't bother. You get a good view from the breakfast room anyway, and it's only round the corner if you want a full view. We liked the hotel: nice room with decent-sized bathroom, good breakfasts, pleasant staff. We tend not to eat in hotel restaurants as a matter of course (and this one was shut in the evenings while we were there). If you want to eat elsewhere, then head away from St Mark's Square, where there are mostly just 'tourist menu' restaurants offering very ordinary-looking food. We tried (and liked) Al Conte Pescaor (San Marco 544), Trattoria da Remigio (Castello 3416) and Cantina Canaletto (Castello 5450/5490), all within 10-15 minutes' walk of the hotel.
Quality hotel...but doesnt deliver what is promised.
This hotel was booked as an anniversary surprise. It was booked online with the promise of complimentry fruit, view of St Marks Square, drinks on arrival and a free complimentary candlelit meal in their restaurant. My initial complaint would be that there was no porter to take our luggage up two flights of stairs to reception when we arrived and no apology was made for it. Whilst I can't knock the hotel itself which was beautifully decorated and clean with quality furnishings and a delightful bar and lounge. The fruit and complimentary drink were not forthcoming, neither was the meal as the restaurant was closed. After heavy negotiation we were offered a meal at a sister hotel about 300 yards away. Although the three course "set " meal was satisfactory we were not allowed to eat in the restaurant but placed down a side entrance outside with another unfortunate couple in the same situation. We had to pay for all drinks none were offered as compensation for the oversight. Also in their rush to rid themselves of us we were almost forced to eat our first and second courses in the space of 15 mins along with our wine and aperitiff. The room was nice but the view was of the side of the Basilica which was shrouded in a sheet ,although you could see the domes and tower. When we checked out we were charged for the "welcome "drink which again we had to question. All in all the situation is not worth the money given the quality of many 3 star hotels in the area.
Nice place but beware...
Nice place. Great location -- right on St Marks Square in Venice by the water. However, beware... They will offer some seemingly great deals the first day you are there. Remember, you haven't explored Venice on your own yet... Examples: - Gondola ride for euro 105 or so for 40 mins with an English speaking gondolier -- well, the going rate is about euro 80 for 50 mins. and the gondolier spoke all of 10 words on the ride. - "Free" tour of a Murano glass factory where they offer you "great" deals because they are selling direct and not through a showroom or store. However, the rates at the factory are completely outrageous but of course you don't know that until you go shopping in Venice on your own. Other than that, it was a nice stay -- people are nice and helpful. And guess what is right across the street? McDonalds!! With kids aged 8 & 5, it was good to see them have fun the first night we were there but c'mon, right across the street...
