I found this hotel is a cheap holiday guide to Rome. It sounded like one of the most affordable (the equivalent of £20.00 per person per night, in a shared room) so I rang them up. They speak basic English but understood my simple Italian, and they do accept bookings over the phone without requesting a deposit, which is great.
The hotel is near the via Ottaviano, itself not far from the Vatican. It looks like an apartment that has been transformed into a hotel by the owners-they live there and you can catch glimpses of family life, of garish Italian television (very much like the caricatures Fellini made of television!) through doors left ajar. The rooms are incredibly clean, and cheerful. We had to share a double bed (even though we were two women) but the bed was so large that it wasn’t that inconvenient. The bathroom is in the corridor.
The hotel doesn’t provide breakfast, but having cappuccino and "cornetti" at a terrace is one of the pleasures of Rome, so that was really not a problem. I would recommend them as they are a nice, informal and affordable place to stay.
