Hotel Splendido is advertised on the Starhotels website as "One Of The Most Elegant Milan Luxury Hotels".
Unfortunately, I must disagree! In spite of the noisy ground floor building work, I was hopeful that the hotel may still live up to its expectations.
It is centrally located by the train station which is a big plus, as there was little to be found in that area so transport to other parts of Milan was a necessity.
This apparently 'lavish, luxury' hotel however is rather an overstatement. Our double en-suite room was small instead of spacious and our knees touched the shower cubicle when sat on the toilet - it was so tiny!
There was certainly no room for one person in the bathroom let alone two! Our room with a view pointed out across a dirty street with only other hotels to look at.
The lifts worked intermittently and no public stairs were to be found until we noticed other guests going downstairs via outside through the emergency exit, which the staff had opened owing to the lift problems.
Breakfast was a busy buffet, where waitresses chatted amongst themselves as we ate and rarely asked if we wanted more coffee.
The reception service was good, although when we complained about a terrible stench coming through the bathroom floor, we were provided simply with a man and his bleach. It was only when we complained again later that day as the smell worsened that we offered a different room.
At night I was comforted by the fact that I could apparently choose from 8 different types of pillow... the one luxury I can pinpoint from our stay at a reasonable, comfortable but certainly not lavish or luxury hotel!
Although I'm betting if I had asked for a pillow type, I wouldn't have got it.

Advertised on their Star hotels website as a luxury hotel, but I must disagree!
Lured by a great flight-inclusive deal from lastminute.com, my partner and I booked a bed and breakfast stay for a few days at the Splendido Hotel, Milan. Situated by the Central Station, it's a great location if you've traveled there by train as it's 2 minutes walk to Splendido. However, this is downtown Milan and it isn't a great location for sightseeing, shopping or eating out. From this location your best bet is to use public transport - the subway in particular - to explore further.
The hotel itself was at the time being renovated, so we endured building work during the day and intermittent problems at nights including a cramped bathroom which unfortunately turned into a smelly cramped bathroom when the drains in the floor decided to leak the most awful odour. Yuck! This took hours to be resolved by staff and was a dampener to say the least.
The bedroom was pleasant and you could choose from several types of pillow which amused me as this was possibly the only luxury available in the hotel in my opinion! Satellite TV provided no international channels except BBC News. An international luxury hotel should surely provide more!
Breakfast consisted of a huge buffet, with both cooked and continental choices, but was blighted by the staff who either watched you like a hawk or stood around our table chatting incessantly. The food was mostly good but not a great selection for a vegetarian guest.
The hotel may have improved since our visit, but if not... I doubt they'll remain open long. Word of mouth can be the best advertising, and for this hotel, it's a thumbs down!!
