I agree 'don't go there'

Jul 2010, rookie

the room we were given was overlooking a block of flats - looking right into the accommodation of the people living there. The reception weren't very helpful in changing the room we had to wait until the next day at 2pm we eventually managed to change rooms to a better room but not great. We were not the only people given these horrible rooms and wanting to change. People smoking on the balconies which wafted into your room. If you are a non smoker its disgusting that you can't even sit out. The same when you have a pre dinner drink on the terrace - cancer sticks EVERYWHERE. Most un pleasant. The grounds are tatty and are in need of maintenance. The food was nothing to get excited about - but the amount people put on their plates was obscene. Definately not a 4 star hotel- 2 star if you are lucky. The worst holiday we have ever had, from the flight to the departure. Couldn't wait to get home.

Kourzalis beach hotel miles from Protaras!

We've just returned from 8 days at this hotel and I can find very little to recommend it to anyone I liked! The buffet food was poor but plentiful but watch out if you leave your seat to get a dessert because the zombie like staff will clear away your drinks before you return. The rooms are small and poorly equipped the worse for size and comfort we'd ever stayed in. So bad we had to upgrade to a superior room which had a balcony over looking the pool and beach just to have a reasonable size room! Air conditioning is at the discretion of the management despite it being advertised in the brochures, apparently 33c is not hot enough to turn it on!!The conditions would be bearable if the hotel wasn't so isolated. The local buses only run between 9-5 at this time of the year. We decided after 2 days we couldn't stand it any longer and hired a car so we could get to some decent restaurants in Protaras about 7k away from the hotel. The room upgrade and car hire negated any perceived value from going all inclusive. There were some happy campers who never left the hotel save for to pop over the road to the local bar to watch the Chelsea match on the Sunday. The rest of the time was used to consume as much all inclusive alcohol as was humanely possible.I did speak to some who were regular visitors to this hotel but they were all elderly and mainly returned because they liked the staff! I think this hotel is bit like Marmite you'll either like it or you'll hate it but 4* it is not barely a 3* in our opinion. Oh yeah the weather is the only part we weren't disappointed with!!

we stayed at the sentido last october it was brilliant all round. the rooms were comfortable and we took advice of a previous review and used our tesco card for the air-con [every little helps] the food and drinks were all good and the pool is lovely you can sit by it or on the grass on very nice loungers and there is a little bay where you can swim and snorkle. 15 minutes walk away is a harbour for boat trips and a much bigger beach. the evenings we spent sitting on the veranda chatting and there was a little caberet in the dining room each evening. we made loads of friends the adults only was bliss. we have booked to go back there in october this year it was one of our best holidays.

This hotel is fine. Maybe just scrapes in at a 4* as food really lets it down. However, this did not detract from an excellent fortnight with just adults and no children(bliss). Weather excellent, people friendly. Hotel located on far outskirts of Protaras but for 1.50euros on a regular bus service you can get to Protaras,or Ayia Napa or Parralimni. There is a bar and restaurant opposite the hotel and a supermarket. There is a daily maid service. Beach towels are provided(1 each)and can be exchanged regularly at the reception desk.Entertainment is o.k, there is no pressure to partake in the activities which are presented by only 2 reps. Beach rocky but sea lovely, excellent pool. Al a Carte menu is not part of the all inclusive package which is not clear in the brochure. Although evening meal is provided in 'theme' nights these bear no resemblance to the food served that night.Repetitive if you stay for two weeks(pretty usual, i know) but food quality NOT 4*..As I mentioned earlier don't let this prevent you from enjoying an otherwise relaxing, peaceful holiday.

Weather is fantastic - just don;t get burned !!!!
Will come straight to the point - booked this hotel at the last minute !!! Yes, a 4* reception area but not the room that we stayed in on the 4th floor - more a premier inn room - however how long do you stay in your room, just to sleep and get changed !!! lots of carpets once you come out of the main reception area (an english hotel thing maybe??) food is very good and lots of variation each day - breakfast very good as is lunch and dinner with lots of choice - staff are courteous but not over friendly. Evening entertainment ........... not so good, saw a lot of glum faces!!
We stayed on an all inclusive basis and the alcoholic drinks are not too bad at all. Water and ice cubes from the bar is absolutely OK to drink but don't drink from the tap in the room as is not purified. Location - nearby beach is quite rocky but OK, a non-shelvng beach so you can walk out quite a way before you you get out of your depth !! If you want a night out from the hotel a taxi will cost approx 10 euros to go into Protaras but it is worth it - we had a great night out !!!
If you stay at this hotel you will have a lovely time, although it is quite quiet at night !!! I hope this review has been helpful to you.

Neither my daughter or I had been to Cyprus before and we were not disappointed.
The flight out ended with thr pilot 'throwing' the plane onto the runway but apart from that everything was fine. The transfer went smoothly and the journey to the hotel was interesting with beautiful sea views and lovely trees and bushes. Our arrival at the hotel was met with friendly efficient service. Our room was adequate but I was surprised by the need to dispose of toilet tissue into a bin and by the lack of complimentary toiletries. This did not detract from our stay there.
Our tour rep Charli was really helpful and informative and was able to refund our money when we were unable to go on a prebooked tour due to my daughter's accident.
We found all staff to be friendly and helpful particularly Michael in the Neptune Bar. The food was plentiful and varied, we enjoyed the theme cuisine with the option of having salad or a roast. Breakfast was relaxed but staff were available if required.
On the second night there my daughter had an accident and the Duty Manager Eva was brilliant. She arranged for a doctor to attend and in no time we were being rushed off to the local private hospital. She continued to ask after my daughter's welfare during the remainder of our stay.
The large pool was always spotless and a delight to be in especially as the temperatures were so hot during our stay. Various activities were organised both in and out of the pool that guests were invited to participate in by an enthusiastic couple of entertainment officers. Plenty of sunbeds were available both around the pool and in the adjoining gardens
The beach was a disappointment but there was a pretty little cove nearby without as many rocks.
The cleaning staff were super efficient and the rooms were spotless at all times.
Of all the other guests we socialized with not one of them had a derogatory word to say about the hotel.
We had a wonderful holiday, thank you to one and all.

Do Not Book Kouzalis Beach Hotel
3 / 10
Jul 2009, Bears Travel

8 readers found this review helpful

Our stay at the Kouzalis Beach Hotel was from 4th July to 18th July 2009 on an All Inclusive basis with Side Sea View room booked as a Cosmos Flexi Stay package holiday. The included flights were fine as were the included transfers, although a little more information would have been nice.
There are some good things about this Hotel, The peaceful location, adults only, nearby bus stops and beach, availability of sun loungers, drinks and pool towels (some of them are small and very worn, keep changing them until you obtain large good ones) and mostly friendly helpful staff who try to please.
However we had several problems at this Hotel and would like to warn potential guests what to really expect.
Firstly it is not of the quality we have experienced in 4 star hotels in Spain, The Canaries, France and Belgium. In fact we have stayed in 2 and 3 star hotels that have been better.
The rooms are of reasonable size and are carpeted, have air conditioning and a TV. There is also a balcony with table and two chairs. The bathroom is not up to 4 star qualities and there is a complete absence of complimentary toiletries except for soap dispensers on the wall. The towels are small, old and worn and so is the bath, the plastic toilet seat kept coming off. Toilet paper is plentiful, but you are asked to put it in the bin and not flush it as the plumbing and sewage can’t cope with it, (Normal for Cyprus?) the bin is emptied daily by the chambermaid.
The side sea view is a bit hit and miss, as although you can see the sea, the view may also be of the car park or the Kouzalis apartment blocks, which are not part of the Hotel, just built by the same developer, and can be the source of building noise and crying, shouting and screaming children.
The pool, patio and terrace areas suffer from guests leaving litter (not enough litter bins and not emptied often enough) and the Hotel Management not putting in place a rigorous enough cleaning regime for these areas. At night many of these areas are in darkness as lots of the lights don’t work or are turned off.
The Restaurant was a Bitter Disappointment and the Biggest problem. It is dirty there is always food on the floor, (as it is also used for Bingo and entertainment it does not get cleaned until the morning) most of the chairs are badly stained, and the stained tablecloths appear to just be turned and not replaced between different diners. The plates, bowls, cups and saucers are a mixed collection of old, new, large, small, chipped, and cracked and sometimes not very clean, the cutlery suffers from the same size and cleanliness problems.
There is also a Very Big problem with flies in the Restaurant, and it is not uncommon to find flies on the food when you approach the buffet to serve yourself. The desert section nearly always has flies on it. The food itself was of poor quality, selection and choice and on many occasions we found it had not been cooked properly and all the way through. There were two rude Headwaiters who said everything in the Restaurant was good, there were no problems
The bar service was mostly good (there is one barman, known as the Grumpy barman who serves you the version he wants to of the drink you have ordered, and does not seem very happy in his job, except when he can throw iced water over the young ladies sitting in the pool by the bar) the rest of the bar staff vary between very good and poorly trained, and are hampered by the lack of glasses. If you go to the bar on three separate occasions and order the same drink, you will receive three different versions of the drink in three different types of glass. As it is very hot all the time you tend to drink lots, soft drinks (Pepsi not Coca-Cola is the brand in use Hooray), water, hot beverages and alcohol, so we feel we had value from the AI on a drinks basis although if you want bottled water you have to buy it.
Another problem is if you have booked this Hotel to escape screaming children. The Hotel is Adults Only and no one under 16 years can stay there. However there is a right of way across the sun terrace so you do get families and children wandering about, also there are lots of children in the neighbouring apartment blocks.
We had a long chat with the Manager about the problems and he appeared to listen and take our points onboard, sadly however almost nothing changed.
We also made our views known to the Cosmos Rep, he however seemed to think nothing was wrong with the Kouzalis Beach Hotel and said no one ever complained, all he did was give us a Cosmos complaints form.
OUR CONCLUSSIONS:
NOT 4 Star more like 2 Star
The Hotel is above and next to a public beach, NOT beachside or beachfront as described on some websites
DO NOT book to stay here
If you have booked DO NOT be put off, you can still have a good holiday if you ignore the problems or be UNBRITISH and COMPLAIN
The All Inclusive includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Daytime snacks and Evening snacks (very little is offered and only just after Dinner for 30 minutes) and many drinks at all of the hotels bars All of the food is disappointing and unhygienic it is quiet surprising there has not been an outbreak of food poisoning or salmonella. We had some stomach problems on a few occasions after eating in the hotel. So eat out when you can, the Taverna next door is alright but a little pricey The Onasis Taverna across the road is very layed back and good value.
As far as our research shows The Kouzalis Beach Hotel is a joint venture between Future Hotels who commissioned it, Kouzalis Development who built it and Sentido Hotels who run it, so there are three companies trying to make profit from this hotel which seems to leave Guest Satisfaction out in the cold.
The in hotel shop is not expensive compared with the Mini-Markets across the road.
The in room safe is 2 Euros a day

After reading some horiffic reviews on here, my boyfriend and I cannot understand what the problem is with this hotel. We had 9 fantastic, quiet and relaxing days at this hotel and enjoyed it very much. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Our maid was very cheerful and always greeted us dispite her very limited knowledge of the English language.
The ambiance of the hotel was very relaxed with instramental music playing softly in the background. The restaurant staff never rushed to remove you from your table and always waited until both of you had finished before clearing your plates.
The food overall was very good (especially the lamb) and in the evening there was a choice of Lamb, Chicken, Pork, Beef and Fish, along with salad, veg, potatoes and chips. If you wanted to be healthy, you could be. The only problem was what to choose.
Admittedly the toast machines did take a long time but it didn't bother us that much.
The evening entertainment could have been better, but the day time activites were good. I recommend a game called Aunt Sally. Great, simple, fun and always creates a giggle. During the activites the hotel did play music, but it was not the "thump thump" type, it was still very soft.
We also recommend the local beer called Keo. Although they make their Carlsberg on the island, it isn't the same as what we have here at home.
The pools are warm and without any children, there isn't much splashing going on. Volley ball and Suba lessons take place in the pool every other day, but there is still room for a "cool off" and the swim up bar is a great idea when the sun gets very hot.
All in all it was a very relaxing week and we will be going back there in the not too distant future.

Relaxing holiday

This was our second holiday at this hotel; we enjoyed it 2 years ago so we booked for 2 weeks this time. Little had changed; very clean rooms, friendly staff and plenty of sun loungers. We were half board this time rather than all inclusive but before we arrived we thought we might up grade but the price for the 2 of us for the 2 weeks was €700 so we gave it a miss! Even we felt that we couldn't drink that amount between us or justify the extra for a lunch. One downside was the price of the beer - €4 for a "large" glass at the pool or inside bar. However there are a couple of bars close by and 2 smallish supermarkets where you can buy drink. Take no notice of the previous bad reviews about the food; some people would complain even if the food were Michelin Star rated. There was always a choice of 4 or 5 meat dishes and at least 1 fish dish plus a daily roast. However the desserts lacked a little imagination and were similar every day. If you are looking for a lively, noisy holiday this hotel is not for you and the plus is that it is adults only.

Wonderful holiday at this hotel

After reading negative reviews on this hotel, my husband and I nearly cancelled our holiday as we were dreading it.
WE ARE SO GLAD WE DIDN’T.
We stayed here from 22nd Oct – 29th Oct 2008.
Here are our honest views on this hotel and local area.
This hotel is a little out of the way but ideal for those who know this and want a quiet relaxing holiday in a lovely setting. Perfect place to chill out and unwind.
The hotel appears to have a large amount of customers who are Swiss or German as well as people from the UK.
The hotel reception area is very nice and airy, the reception staff are very polite, helpful and friendly.
Just beyond the reception area is the upstairs Espirades Cocktail Bar which has a nice seating area fronted by patio doors and floor to wall glass that leads onto a lovely balcony which looks out onto the pool and across to the beach. Across from the bar is a seating area with sofas and tables.
There is a small shop but due the hotel about to close for the winter season (3 days after our departure), it wasn’t as stocked as would be expected during the height of the summer season. There is, however, two little “supermarkets” on the road the hotel is off and they have a good selection of products, the larger of the two shops is the one closet to the neighbouring hotel Crystal Springs but it is literally up the road within walking distance.
The Neptune Poolside Bar is nicely situated and the bar staff are very friendly and have a great sense of humour, once they get to know you, you can really have a good laugh with them. I feel if you treat them with the correct jovial and polite attitude you can expect the same response back.
The grumpy barman possibly mentioned in previous reviews has left and has been replaced.
We didn’t need to use the indoor pool but went to see what it looked like, it would be nice for an early morning or late evening swim but sadly the opening time are approx 10.00am – 19.00pm, I feel this should be extended as this pool does not get any use at all it appears and seems a waste.
Had it opened longer, I would definitely have made use of it.
The outside pool was lovely and refreshing just a perfect cool temperature, the seats by the bar had the sun on all day so a novel way of topping up the tan on your back whilst sipping your favourite tipple.
We noticed that the Jacuzzi mentioned wasn’t working and the small round pool pictured in brochures we assumed must be the Jacuzzi didn’t have any air jets so must be just a small 50cm deep round pool to sit in and relax, there was an area by the entrance to the pool by the side of the pool bar that did have what looked like jets in the sides but it wasn’t working.
Plenty enough sun loungers and brolleys to go round even after people had taken time to “book” their space for the coming day. The sun loungers are slightly uncomfortable where they have a gap between the flat part and the adjustable backrest, this can be sorted by putting a folded up towel over it or by lying on a lilo for padding. Again this is no way near a complaint, just advice for future holiday makers.
Although there is the facility for beauty and massage treatments, I didn’t know of anyone using that facility, maybe because that was on the same floor level as the indoor pool and gym, maybe this should be relocated to the room space next to the reception desk that appears to be vacant.
Our room (no 342) which was on the reception entrance side of the hotel, had the most wonderful side sea view over the little bay and out across the beach, the room was nice because of the views we had from our balcony.
One thing we agreed with from the reviews we had read is the fact the bed was exceptionally hard to the extent of making your bones ache. We solved this by placing blankets on top of the mattress under the bed sheets for extra padding and didn’t make a fuss or let it ruin our holiday.
The tip about reward cards in the air conditioning slot worked a treat but it must be noted that if you leave the card in before room service, you will come back to find it lifted out slightly to turn the electric off, when we stayed local to the hotel, we tried to make sure we popped to our room after daily room service to pop the card in the slot again so the room was nice and cool to return to.
The TV did only show SKY news and this was a disappointment if you fancied watching something in the evening instead of joining the entertainment. We personally chose not to join in with the evening entertainment but that was because it really is not our cup of tea and it didn’t start until 10.00pm which for us was fairly late as we are normally early risers due to our careers but this is not a complaint against the hotel, just our own personal choice. We kind of expected this in advance after reading reviews so came prepared with our laptop and some dvd’s just in case, which proved handy.
We were all inclusive and were given a yellow wrist tag to wear all holiday so that their staff would know when serving us.
The food, which has been a great source of complaint on reviews sites, was to us perfectly fine, in fact the choice of dishes at lunchtime and during the evening could not be faulted, my husband is extremely fussy and even he managed to tuck in. As we are big meat lovers we were really impressed by the volume of meat dishes and each night there was a carved meat of some sort. The meat in the dishes was in big chunks too, which was good as there was more meat than sauce which is the opposite of some restaurants.
The salads were tasty and refreshing and there was always fresh bread available in warming ovens to slice yourself.
We always had fresh fruit available at mealtimes and the desserts were delicious with a freezer full of four different ice-creams to help yourself from, the banana one was especially nice.
Our one comment is the fact that it would be nice to have a little guidance from the hotel on mealtime protocol as for breakfast and lunch you can be free to find your own tables and help yourself to the buffets but in the evening you are seated by waiting staff who take a drink order, but this does not allow for sprits only wines, bear and soft drinks. This appeared quite daunting as we arrived and our first mealtime was dinner. Once the waiters had taken our drink order, they left us and we didn’t know if we had to wait for them to return with them or if we could go straight to get our food, we watched other diners but during our stay we noticed other newcomers suffer the same dilemma.
The waiting staff however, after our first concerns, were actually very friendly and very quickly got to recognise us and gave us friendly greetings to enquire how we were each day.
They do clear your plates away very swiftly but after analysing this we feel this is just a polite customary thing not as has been previously mentioned, a way to clear out customers faster, we felt that maybe the waiting staff are trained to do this so customers do not have dirty crockery in front of them whilst sat at the table. This appeared to be the case as this happened on the occasions we ate out elsewhere in other restaurants too.
The breakfast food was only lukewarm at times but we felt this was due to the dining room opening so early for people starting their days early for trips and return journey’s home, there was though, a varied selection everyday and plenty to chose from. It is safe to say we believe there was something for everyone.
There had been mention of flies before so I thought to comment on this pest, they do exists but they are not the buzzing blue bottles we envisaged from reading previous reviews, they are more like fruit flies.
Cats do hang around the restaurant and pool area, not in the hundreds as previously mentioned in reviews.
We probably saw up to 10 different ones, they sometimes sneak into the restaurant but get shooed out except at breakfast time as it seems the large glass doors leading straight out to the pool area remain open at breakfast to allow diners to chose to have their breakfast or cup of tea/coffee out overlooking the pool in the sun.
All Inclusive Snack selection could be explained better to visitors and it is not widely advertised, we did one day find out that there was a menu of snacks to chose from if you found yourself hungry outside of mealtimes, one day we had missed lunch due to a trip out and ordered a toasted sandwich but we noticed there was also jacket potatoes with fillings that would’ve made a nice meal. To order these snacks we sat by the pool next to the restaurant and the waiter provided us with the menu.
Lovely to have no children jumping about in the pool and running up and down the hotel corridors screeching and shouting, we did very occasionally hear the children from the neighbouring hotel and a baby crying from the apartments next door but that was no problem, and once some local children put their heads through some bushes to see what was going on but that truly is nothing to make negative comments about at all.
Buses stop on the road just by the hotel and are an experience not to be missed, the cost was 1.50 Euros wherever you wanted to go each way and to go towards Protaras and beyond you need to Agia Napa bus on the hotel side of the road, it drops you back just a small way up the road before the hotel.
When coming back to the hotel, you need the stops and buses heading towards Paralimni.
Normally when we hopped onto a bus they had seats free but one day it must have been local market day and the bus was heaving with people, we had to stand and we kept allowing more and more people in until we were squashed like sardines.
Hair-raising experience but kind of amusing too.
Don’t get fooled like us and hop off at the first stretch of shops thinking it is Protaras, carry on until you reach the area with water fountains and Macdonalds, this is the main area of Protaras.
If you want to see the beautiful Fig Tree Bay, look for Capo Bay Hotel in Protaras and follow the sign down to the beach, lovely.
Our travel rep gave us a brochure with local tours, we personally felt disappointed with the trip to Larnaca Market as we had expected a street market and found ourselves at market stalls selling cheap tat really no different to ones found at home. This was followed by a trip to the camel park, this was ok but we ourselves did not feel it was worth the 33 Euros each that we had paid.
We also spent 81 Euros each to visit Famagusta Select tour run by Aeolos which also visited Salamis and stopped off in a local fish taverna by a harbour, whilst this was a very insightful and interesting trip with a good guide we realised that we could have gone to a tour operator shop and booked it for 30 euros each with the only difference being it was with Eman Tours and didn’t include lunch.
We realised we had just been “conned” by 51 Euros each for a meal that consisted of a few dips with salad and bread for starter, a chicken breast, portion of rice and a few chips, a plate of fresh fruit and small portion of local sweet desert and a glass of wine or lemon squash.
However, the trip with Eman tours to the Troodos Mountains is well worth joining, we paid 33 euros each and for the quality of the trip and knowledge of our tour guide Elani and the distance travelled during the day, we would happily have paid the 81 euros for this full day trip.
If you chose to holiday in Cyprus and only want to make one trip, I thoroughly recommend this one.
Summary
We have no complaints whatsoever and would like to point out that the things mentioned in this review are only to bring previous review comments into perspective.
If you have already booked and like us were thinking of cancelling, go with an open mind, do what I did and try to contact the hotel or your tour operator to see if you can try request a room near to room 342 if you want a lovely view, obviously at the time I didn’t know room numbers but pre-requested a nice side sea view room and although was told there was no guarantee this would be accepted, I think it helped as we could not have asked for a better view if we tried.
Staff very friendly and helpful, always greet you with a smile and say hello, this includes non customer facing staff who clean the hotel to bar and waiting staff.
Lovely setting.
Brilliant choice of food at mealtimes.
Wonderful Pool area.
We would definitely consider returning to this very hotel and give it 9/10.
