Milan is not a City I had ever thought of visiting and I’d put my neck on the line and say I probably won’t go back but I’m glad I’ve seen it. Its not like going to New York or even Dublin when there is so much that you want to see while you’re there. What do you know about Milan? There’s lots of shopping! Shopping that most of us can’t afford. But despite that there is actually a lot to do. The Duormo, the imposing cathedral in the centre of the city, is awe inspiring and the view from the roof is spectacular. Not only of the city but of the roof itself. If you want to see The Last Supper book before you go. We stayed for three nights but didn’t get a look in which is a shame.
Our hotel was about a 20 minute walk from The Duormo. It is a 4 star and the room was spectacular. Mini bar was a tad expensive but that’s what you expect isn’t it! The staff were fantastically helpful and the menu in the evening, again while expensive, was delicious. Highly recommended. Only downer was that there was nowhere to sit and have a drink after dinner so you either had to go out or to your room.
There was an interesting market on the Saturday about a 20 minute walk from the hotel, real local people buying vegetables. Fascinating.
Milan has got real chic class. And the best bit for me? Sitting in one of the many cafes around The Dourmo drinking a diet coke and picking out the English people - easy against the beautiful Italians. (Diet Coke - £10 for two!)

I had never thought of going to Milan but suddenly it was upon me, a weekend break in the fashion capital. Three nights in four star luxury, excitement was not the word. We arrived at our hotel after a 45 minute taxi ride from the airport at Malpensa, a truly hair-raising experience. A city no outsider should drive in! The hotel was beautiful. Our room was huge with a beautiful bathroom and lovely walk in wardrobe. By this point though our main concern was the fabulous air conditioning - it was hot.
The hotel was situated in the financial district of Milan and, we found, about a 30 minute walk to the Duomo. The first afternoon was spent walking apparently endlessly with no real destination. We had already tried to book to see The Last Supper but were too late and felt that this was all there really was to see in Milan. After 3 hours of walking aimlessly I declared I was bored. But looking around us at that point we realised that we were in the heart of the city. Standing outside the opera house, La Scala and opposite the beautiful shopping forum. We walked through that admiring the beauty and stood then in the square outside the Duomo. Breath-taking. For the next three days we found ourselves drawn back to this area time and time again. We sat in various road side cafes behind the Duomo and soaked up the atmosphere. These people know how to shop! And we played a game of spot the English person - not difficult - the Milanese are chic, we wear socks with our trainers.
We had a super relaxing weekend in a stylish and historic city. Transportation we found was walking, tram or tube, all of which were inexpensive, efficient and easy. But ultimately I won’t visit again, it’s definitely a one off. Two Diet Cokes cost nearly £10! It was hot hot hot, avoid July, apparently in August the city shuts down as everyone goes away on holiday. The city is either for those of you who have stacks of cash and want to do a designer shop close to home (1hr 45 minutes flight) or for those who love art. If you’re seeking out The Last Supper (phone ahead before you get there and ask your hotel reception to book it for you) or fine paintings and sculptures then make a bee line for Milan.
Sorry, but I’ll stick to New York.
