YMCA West Side Hostel

I stayed there for 1 week in a single private room. I found the location very promising as I read the other reviews. Was looking for a place for sleeping, but this place is not even suitable for that. I did not expect too much, I am not picky, but for 70 $ per night at least no PAINT COMING OFF THE WALL, WINDOWS closing TIGHT and a room bigger than a SHUE BOX. I catched there a terrible cold at night under the thin blanket because of wind and cold coming inside (there was no heating any more in april but it was snowing outside).... more

You go to NYC to see the sights and take in the atmosphere, not to stare at the inside of a hotel room, hence the reason my aussie mate and I stayed at the YMCA for 3 nights in April 05. The location is what sold the place to us. You are right on top of central park and a short walk away from the subway. Every tourist attraction is to hand. I stayed two nights at the WS YMCA in early March 2006. I'd done a lot of research into budget-level accommodation prior to booking, and decided the Y was probably the best of a bad bunch. I wasn't expecting the Ritz, and frankly I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived about 1:30am; checkin was quick and painless. I had a single room with shared bathroom on the 6th floor. I was a little optimistic about the bunkbeds, with no railings and all, but hey i didnt roll out. The rooms were small but they just looked smaller because my room mate was messy. Rooms were cleaned daily and service was helpful and polite. They have loadsa take away menus too! The hostel if full of diffrent people from all over the place and there mostly all friendly. Overall my stay at the West Side YMCA was enoyable and a good experience.

well for $39 pppn what do you expect? rooms were cleaned daily fresh towels. Showers took a bit of time getting hot but there was always hot water. Rooms just two bunks with cable tv was good for price. Nice and quiet in the evening. rooms pretty much sound proof. Not much of a common room though so if a single traveller i would say dont come here unless u want peace and quiet. Central park right on door step whole foods market a few blocks away close to metro etc.. was worth the money we thought

Westside YMCA is in a great location near Central Park and handy to public transport for all other NY attractions. Be warned though the rooms are TINY (see pics) and a little dingy, but are clean and warm. Bathrooms are shared, but rooms have cable tv (not that you would want to spend too much time inside them) $89 plus tax seemed pricy, but is actually pretty good value for the location.

This is an excellent place to stay when in NewYork. It is very basic. We had rikity bunk beds in a small but clean room on the 8th floor with a great view of Central Park. (see my pix elsewhere on this site) The bedding & towels were changed EVERY day. Which is more than happens in many "posh" hotels! The shared bathrooms were basic, plenty hot water and if you were up fairly early you didn't see anyone else. The shared bathrooms didnot lock on the male door but they DID lock on the female doors. The rooms are very basic and the sheets, towels and mattresses are a little thin. There is also a bit of a vibe about some of the residents. It seems to have a few oddballs wandering around. That said the gym is great and the location is super, right next to Central Park. But if you can afford it, go somewhere else, especially if you arent going to use the gym.

Just returned from staying at West Side YMCA for 5 nights. Excellent location, rooms very basic but what do you expect for the price. Rooms cleaned daily. Bunk beds had no rails for safety but they were wide enough not to roll out! Having read previous reviews about the cleanliness of some areas we were pleasantly surprised.
